Chapter 26: Battle Before Dawn
Walkthrough
Having discovered the Black Fang plot to kill the crown Prince of Bern, our heroes race to the palace to try and stop the assassins. Will they get there in time...?
This chapter is one of the most frustrating chapters in the entire game, and it's all because of one man. Jaffar. Jaffar is positioned in the south-east of the map on his own. He has a 20 use Killing Edge as his only weapon and some Elixirs to heal up. Problem is, he has to deal with upwards of 10 enemies before we can get there.
There is the quite real possibility of him getting killed by these enemies. If he doesn't kill Maxime on the first turn it usually spells trouble. Our main priority as you can tell is to get to Jaffar as quickly as we can.
We are positioned on the northern side of the map. Ursula, the boss is in the southern part at the bottom of the staircase. Nino is on the eastern side and Jaffar on the western side. The most important character in this chapter, the prince, is lying face down in his bedroom in the center of the chapter. He awakens on turn 2 and positions himself on one of the columns. Enemies will reach him by turn 8, so you have a 7 turn window to reach him.
There are two paths we can take to head down towards the boss. One locked door on the right, and one on the left. Pick units with high movement speed, paladins, flying units, valkyries. Give them Door Keys and position them on the left hand side of your starting position. They are going to go down the western path and reach Jaffar.
Down the western passageway there are scores of heroes, mercenaries and mages. Lance users are the best for this.
The rest of your team will head down the eastern passageway, rushing to Nino's position and to clear out the enemies on the eastern passageway. There are very few enemies down the eastern passageway, there are a few fighters and some mages and that's it. In the south-east corner there is a bishop that is carrying a droppable ELysian Whip. Make sure to send somebody down there to kill him.
We have a major problem in this chapter. Thieves. There are two thieves that appear on the map, one heading for each chest room. The room on the eastern side is no problem, your units will reach it long before the thief can get there on turn 7. The western room however is a problem. The door gets opened on turn 4, and the first chest on turn 5. The most you can hope for is to kill the thief after he has opened the first chest. That is if you use a unit with 8 movement and rush them down there as fast as possible.
For strategy, split your teams and charge. First three turns are spent going down the two corridors. Rush your units as quickly as you can, the prince's life depends on it. If any of your units get low on HP, heal them up. Around turn 4 you should be close to reaching Nino who has been dueling a monk for what seems like eternity (Don't worry, the monk can't kill her). Talk to her with one of the lords to get her to join you.
Here's where another tricky part crops up. To access the Gaiden chapter you have to get Nino to talk to Jaffar, who is on the opposite side of the map. Ursula, the boss, has Bolting and will attack Nino if she is put in range of her so you have to kill Ursula, waste her Bolting up or rescue and drop Nino on the other side of the map.
The group you sent down the western corridor will have gotten sick of beating up heroes and mercenaries, rescue Jaffar if he's in a spot of trouble or moving too close towards Ursula's position. Kill the thief that appears by the chest room door and then head for the prince's room. Watch out for the reinforcements that appear from the stairwell.
Around turn 8 you should head for Ursula. Choose what you're going to do, either tank the 5 uses of Bolting and then go in for her so she can't snipe down any of your weak units. The other choice is to charge in and kill her while she still has the Bolting equipped. It weighs her down a ton and will make all of your units attack her twice. Be careful of any reinforcements around her when you charge in and make sure your unit will get the kill, or won't die if she attacks wither her other tome on the enemy phase.
The third option is to not kill her. But where's the fun in that?
Once Ursula is down, the chapter is a synch. Have Nino talk to Jaffar, open the chests, have the lords talk to the prince for some special conversations and just wait out the chapter

Rush her while she has her Bolting equipped. It weighs her down a lot and stops her from being able to counter-attack. Otherwise use a unit with high speed and resistance, such as a Falco Knight to take her down. Watch out for the reinforcements around her when rushing in, you don't want them attacking you as well as her. |
