I'll be buying one pretty soon. like probably tomorrow if all goes well. i'm already looking at splatoon, xenoblade, pokken tournament, and mario kart, and those will keep me busy for a long time i'm sure. but i don't even really know what the wii U has to offer since i've never bothered to look at it. recently though a lot of good games are coming out, so i figured i'd ask you guys what games i should look into.

Pikmin, Super Mario 3d world, Wind Waker HD are all solid picks. Especially sm3dw

I haven't heard anything about pikmin yet. Should I have played the first two before trying to jump into 3 or is there no real problem with jumping right in?

I think all of those games are great, and all of them have great (IMO) online multiplayer, with only Xenoblade's not really being as interactive typically (as only some select missions can be done with others).

The Wii U, like most consoles, has a solid selection of games that ultimately depends on your tastes etc.; some people think it has few to no worthwhile games, whereas I have more physical Wii U games (and maybe digital too, since there are a lot of solid digital exclusives/VC titles and such) than any other game console, and I've gotten tons of fun out of it

I'm assuming that you're decided on the Wii U and not going to wait to hear if the NX is backwards compatible at all? Regardless of whether it is or not, the Wii U could be likely to get a price drop soon due to a new console coming out, so just something to keep in mind, though I'm sure you've already thought this through (I just feel like I should say it anyway just in case, not trying to be annoying)

With my preface done, here are some other average to great Wii U games:

- New Super Mario Bros. U/Super Mario Maker IF you like 2D Mario. New Super Luigi U is only some nice Luigi fun and rather challenging.

- Devil's Third - 3D action/shooter game. nonsensical violent stuff, a little cheesy, but I found it to be fun (and it has a supposedly great online multiplayer mode that I still haven't gotten to yet XP)

- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - TRACK TREASURE AS TOAD. I'd say "'nuff said" but actually it's a very fun puzzle game, if you can find it for cheapish I'd recommend it as it was very fun.

- Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - like Canvas Curse, but on the Wii U. very fun, very pretty, has a very cool aesthetic.

- Yoshi's Woolly World - a great platformer, the only real problem I can remember having with it is that there's a dog in it and on the boxart and I don't like dogs >:[ lol

- Hyrule Warriors - TLoZ meets Dynasty Warriors, basically. Simple but fun action chaos, much more enjoyable if you're familiar with TLoZ

- Nintendo Land - def not worth $60 esp. at this point (more like $20-30) but a solid game if you're a long-time Nintendo fan and can appreciate all the different games and their references, and it *can* be a little challenging. That being said it's basically just a collection of gameplay-driven Nintendo-themed mini-games so yeah.

- Wii Sports Club/Wii Party U - I found them both very fun (and they're good for playing with casual gamers) but def not for everyone and at this point, probably not a priority unless you like to play with family or such.

- Need for Speed: Most Wanted U - a great racing game IMO, I really enjoyed it and I think this is the definitive version of this entry in the Need for Speed series. if you've already played it then pass, but if you like racing games then this one is pretty solid esp. if you're a fan of the old Burnout games since it felt like it played similarly (perhaps 'cuz it was made by Criterion)

- Sonic Lost World - it's a Sonic game, you'll hear lots of mixed opinions on it, but I thought it was pretty fun. I'm easier to please than a lot of people though.

- The Wonderful 101 - A great hardcore action game revolving around a ton of different heroes... it's over-the-top and exciting and has a decent story for an action game and it's PlatinumGames and they consistently do great work, so yeah. Only real issues IMO are getting used to the controls/learning how to make them do what you want and getting over the difficulty of the game.

- Pikmin 3 - My first and only Pikmin game but it was pretty good, just couldn't play it in long spurts (perhaps due to the time-limits breaking my immersion and such). A very interesting idea of sorts that I could appreciate though.

Top-tier games:

- Super Mario 3D World - one of the best games for the system and a great 3D platformer. if you don't like 3D Mario that's fine but if you haven't tried it I recommend it. the later levels are challenging too which is nice.

- Bayonetta/Bayonetta 2 - two of the best action games ever, developed by the King of action games, PlatinumGames. I get that not everyone is okay with playing such a violent, bloody, and potentially sexy game but if you can handle it, I highly recommend it. Bayonetta is great but Bayonetta 2 is even better and is one of the best action games of all time, possibly the best one I've played not including action RPGs.

- Smash for Wii U, but you might not want this if you have the 3DS version already. (I personally think the Wii U version is superior in every way except portability BUT I get not wanting to pick it up when you could be having new experiences.)

- Splatoon, Xenoblade X, and Mario Kart 8, which you all mentioned. Pokken Tournament maybe, it's kind of on the border for me but I think I'd put it under "great".

Don't forget that there are countless VC titles from great series (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario... wow there's a lot of Mario... uh, Golden Sun, Kirby, Mega Man, etc.), countless indies (multi-platform and exclusives; don't worry, there are a number of quality ones even if they're "just indie games"), and other retail games that might appeal to you too, though they may be a bit older, multi-plats, more controversial, etc.--then again I noted Devil's Third and that game got terrible ratings along with Sonic Lost World IIRC so yeah lol

I haven't heard anything about pikmin yet. Should I have played the first two before trying to jump into 3 or is there no real problem with jumping right in?

no problem with jumping right in, I think there are just some references to other games but I beat the game having not played Pikmin 1 or 2 and was fine.

@the NX comment i have considered waiting for it, but i honestly don't know if i'll have the money to buy one when it comes out. if it was coming this year i would just wait for it, but i am financially stable as of this moment, and probably won't be about the same time next year. i had been planning to move out within the next few months, but some major delays happened. basically i don't need to save the money that i thought i needed to anymore, so i was left to decide between a wiiU and saving for a new computer. i have the money for the console already soooo...you have too much faith in my ability to think ahead is all i'm trying to say. i'm the kind of person who will cross a bridge after he's already burned it to the ground.

the only thing i'm really worried about is that everyone pretty much suggests the same games. that doesn't say much about the console tbh, unless of course those are just that good(which in the case of a few i can definitely see as a possibility).

one last thing i forgot to mention: the only reason i was interested in the NX in the first place is because of DQ11 which is also coming to 3ds in some form. if there was more info leaked i could get excited about it and wait, but there have been so few leaks that we basically know nothing about it. other than it being at least as powerful as the ps4 since it's sharing a release that looks identical. basically all we have is that it's going to be some kind of bridge between handheld and home console.

@Virtual Console that's a big selling point for me too actually. i've heard that there are some ds games being made into VC releases? even if it was only gba games i'd be happy. that little thing is one of my favorite systems to date. are you able to play them on just the gamepad, or do they have to be displayed on a tv? i don't think a gba game would look very good scaled up that big tbh. unless they fixed the issue that most emulators have(which wouldn't surprise me tbh. this is nintendo we're talking about and they love backwards compatibility of all kinds)

BAHAHAHA. that's hilarious. so you will just do that thing they do in old cartoons where you keep walking on an invisible platform for a bit until you realize there's nothing to stand on and then you free fall straight downwards? lolol.

I mean... for me, I just went to my shelf and listed off all the good games. I wouldn't think you've heard of a lot of those if you hadn't done much research. I mean, I dunno, I guess I just don't see a problem in people listing certain games often, especially if it's a large number of them.

@VC games FE8 doesn't look too great on the big screen, don't think I've really played any other GBA games or any DS games so can't really say but generally whatever is displayed on the TV is also displayed on the GamePad so yeah you could just use that (though keep in mind the GamePad's wireless range is limited and may or may not extend to where you want it to depending on various factors such as where it's placed, walls/interference, etc.)

as for what games are available i think you can just look them up online. you can now buy eShop games online (like on a browser) and even before that they have pages for all the games so yeah. you can also probably find a list of VC games on Wikipedia too. in fact I looked up a list recently... https://en.wikipedia...(North_America)bam, just ctrl+F if you're interested in a specific game.

There has been some plummeting in the past. Sometimes though I make it across before the bridge falls =p. I do appreciate the suggestions by the way. I think I'll probably be getting xenoblade and Mario kart first. Those two should hold my interest for awhile. Is xenoblade chronicles x a long game like the original? Or even half as long?(lel)

Also I looked through the list, and I can get behind a lot of those games. I love that Nintendo does that virtual console service. It's nice that they understand their customers want to play the old games...legally

You are. In fact, it was upon playing FE8 on the wii u gamepad that I realized...

The Wii U gamepad is A GIGANTIC GAMEBOY ADVANCE.

No, seriously, look at it. It's a giant, square-shaped GBA!

After reading Blue Leafeon's comment it has come to my attention that the GBA lacks an analog stick.

I guess that explains why I've always liked emulating games meant for that console's controls...

Nor does it have triggers, however I can see the point. Especially since I've seen gba cases that have analog sticks, though only when they were used to make a handheld n64

plz.

It has a directional pad on one side of the screen, buttons on the other, and shoulder buttons. It's a giant GBA just with a few added bells and whistles. :P

By that logic my PSVita is a GBA.

(I mean it's not like the vast majority of games for it care about the touchscreen and the...weird pad on the back of the console)

It's Sony's ripoff of a GBA.

@Topic:

No SSB Wii U? I honestly feel like the Wii U version of smash is 10 times greater than the 3DS version.

I'm considering it. Haven't decided yet, but it definitely had my interest for a few moments. I'm usually not one for buying a game multiple times though. If I get the pro controller thing I most likely will though. I'd like to try out bidou tech eventually if possible, and that just isn't gonna happen on a 3ds. Can't remap buttons/aren't enough available anyway.

I'm not one for that, either, but I genuinely feel as if the wii u version of smash is much more enjoyable.

But then again, I'm not one of those For Glory people who plays with no items and ONLY omega stages. I do like to have a little chaos in the battle (even if that means said chaos ends in me dying lol) and the 3DS version adds WAY too much chaos for me to enjoy. (...I do not like feeling as if the stages are deliberately trying to kill me. LOOKING AT YOU SPIRIT TRACKS.)

I just bought one of those gamecube controller adapters, and I find that I'm genuinely better at playing the wii u version than the 3DS. Not sure why that is--I just am. (Maybe because I can actually SEE what I'm doing lol.)
