my personal game of the year is monster hunter 4 ultimate. i got the most time out of it(243 hours on record atm), and had the most fun playing it through group hunts with friends. the graphics are amazing for a handheld game, and not to mention the online play is fairly seamless as long as you have a decent connection(when you don't there are some pretty hilarious graphical glitches like monsters and other hunters teleporting around. you've never played monster hunter until you get killed by a fatalis flame that you never even saw.) anyway it's just a great quality game that packages a lot for the price. especially with all the dlc quests.

Going on a technicality here, since it was originally released in 2010 but then got re-released on the Wii U eShop in 2015.
Trauma Team.
Six sad doctors fight evil butterflies and super-Ebola. The plot is riddled with holes and some of the gameplay modes are heavily flawed, but it's still an insanely fun game and I love the main cast.

This was super tough for me because two games that I both was waiting a long time for came out, and one of them I just beat today (but even though I just beat it I'm including it as part of 2015 as it came out in 2015 and it's only a week into the new year...)
but ultimately, this game is one that I was super excited for, was beautiful, super fun to play, had great music, a world and story that kept me motivated to play and explore, and in general was just one of the most fun games I ever played--such that I actually am well into a 2nd playthrough and I rarely ever replay games. That game is:
Xenoblade Chronicles X - Game of the Year 2015
Exclusive for the Wii U and made by what is now one of my favorite developers, Monolith Soft, this open-world action RPG is pretty much a game that completely caters to my tastes, meaning I have almost nothing but praise for it. Yes, like any game it has some small things one could nitpick about but compared to other games it's nothing even worth mentioning IMO, at least based on my personal experience: it runs great, looks great, it's super detailed, it's GIGANTIC--one of the biggest open-worlds ever (that isn't procedurally-generated) and completing it is said to take over 300 hours. I've still got a lot to do and with online features as well this will be a game I will probably keep playing and remember fondly as one of the best games I've ever played (up there with The World Ends With You and the like) for a long time to come.
That aside, I'd like to award various other games for various other things, just because I enjoy reflecting on the games I've played and reflecting on them (mostly their positives because being positive is nice, though there will be some negatives as well =P).
Best Story
Trails in the Sky SC
This game was the other contender for Game of the Year. Unfortunately, due to various circumstances such as the pressure to complete it, problems with the PSP version of the game (though I played it on Vita), my Vita buttons not working, and my playstyle resulting in the game being paced a bit too slowly (I essentially got frustrated as I was being forced to run all around Liberl for various reasons and just wanted to get on with the story), as well as a few other personal gripes, this game just didn't quite win it like I thought it might. However, don't get me wrong—this sequel did NOT disappoint and it was actually a fantastic game with one of the most engrossing stories I've ever played, certainly in recent times, and with Trails in the Sky FC being one of the games to get me back into gaming, I'm really happy to have finally finished the sequel, have been very inspired by the game, and am looking forward to all the Trails games to come.
Runner-Ups: Tokyo Xanadu, The Last of Us: Remastered | Honorable Mentions: Persona 4 Golden, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void
Best Game On My Backlog I Finally Got To Play
The Last of Us: Remastered
Not a ton of competition for this: The Last of Us really isn't the kind of game I often play, but I still know these games can be very fun, it's just a matter of priorities, really. That being said, I finally got to play this game and having not heard much more than a "apparently it's pretty good" from when it released (I try to avoid hype trains unless I'm the one commanding them, heh...), well, it didn't disappoint. It's a dark, thrilling, simple-but-executed-great game that a lot of developers might want to play if only so they can get a little bit of a better idea on how to develop "characters" so they're more than just, well "characters", silly as it may sound. The gameplay and graphics were great and the story really wasn't that crazy or anything but still managed to get me hooked, and I now have quite a bit of respect for this game.
Runner-ups: Persona 4 Golden (which didn't live up to its hype), Child of Light (which wasn't amazing, but was short and sweet, IMO)
Biggest Disappointment of a Game:
Tales of Zestiria (you're not worth getting a picture for...)
Runner-ups: Fire Emblem if: Black Kingdom, Teslagrad
Note that these aren't "the worst games", just games that I was kind of hoping would be better than I actually found them. Zestiria crushed my hopes for a good Tales of game, and Fire Emblem if/Fates was made out to have this great story and such as well as having a route that would appeal to classic/hardcore FE fans, but it really didn't pan out that way, especially story-wise, so I feel stupid for buying into Nintendo's advertisements/believing they would improve from Awakening's story, lol. Teslagrad on the other hand was just super frustrating and though it had some cool mechanics, was really not that impressive as a Metroidvania-esque platformer or whatever you want to call it.
Best New 3DS IP
Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
Honestly, didn't think I'd be adding this game to this kind of list, but despite some places where the gameplay perhaps feels a bit unpolished or frustrating, this game was honestly enjoyable overall. Very quirky? Weird (i.e. different)? Hard to understand, even? Sure, but I just kind of picked it up thinking it could be good and well, it was! There was a hidden layer of strategy to the gameplay that I quite enjoyed and in that sense it did have that touch of "Intelligent Systems" to it. The settings and art aren't exactly my thing but I could hardly call them "bad", and the story, though simple, did its job as one might expect for this kind of game. Honestly, we don't get a lot of new IPs from Nintendo these days, and honestly it feels that way for big developers in general, so I'm happy we not only got a new IP, but it was actually pretty good! It even had some Fire Emblem cameos that made it even more enjoyable for me, haha. Sadly due to sales I don't think a sequel is likely, but this game really was a fresh experience and since I didn't play Yo-kai Watch I didn't have much competition for new IPs on the 3DS, so I'm giving the award to Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
Best New Wii U IP
Splatoon
I doubt this will come as a surprise to many people, if anyone: Splatoon is a colorful, unique, super fun, super fresh shooter, at least from my experience, and I'm super glad it's a new IP and not some Mario spin-off, because we have enough Super Mario games as it is, and I've used the word "super" so many times in this sentence you'd think I have a "super" dull vocabulary. But seriously, Splatoon is vibrant and exciting with quick matches that manage to keep me playing and having fun, even if things aren't going too well. Of course, like any competitive game, the multiplayer mode will be frustrating when things aren't going your way, but that just comes with the territory. I think it has a little bit room for polish (optional voice chat and maybe a bit cleaning up of all the weapons as to not overwhelm poor people like me who can't handle like, 30+ different weapon options...) but overall this was a highly successful launch of a new IP and I think Nintendo deserves it. As most people say, hopefully it inspires them to keep trying out new ideas, because honestly, as much as I like sequels, as long as new IPs are good, I can get behind them too—though I guess now that creates yet another series people will be begging for sequels, haha... Splatoon 2, when?
Runner-ups: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (yes this came out in late 2014 and is based on Mario but I beat it in 2015 and think it deserves a mention), Runbow | Honorable Mention: Genei Ibun Roku ♯FE (incomplete, but I imported it and am having fun, and it's practically a new IP, at least in my mind)
Best Vita Game/Biggest Surprise
Tokyo Xanadu
Honestly, I got this game because it's an action RPG and Falcom, and I really, REALLY like both of those. A lot. Especially action JRPGs made by Falcom. I mean, Ys? Come on! But with the school premise and what seemed like potentially flat character designs/anime tropes, I didn't expect Tokyo Xanadu to be very good. I just kind of expected a decent game with some Falcom charm. And well, honestly, in many ways, that's what it was, but as I progressed deeper into the game, it became a lot more than that. It became fun to do the quests, I put extra effort into making sure I understood the dialog (given that it's an import) because I actually cared about what characters were saying, even if it wasn't a particularly important scene in the main story... and though it was a bit tiring trying so hard to translate everything, it was worth it.
At its worst, the game has some cheap dialog, bland gameplay, and feels kinda lame/cheesy, but at its best, it has the high-paced thrilling action of the Ys series and the nuanced story-telling and captivating character development of the Trails series, all to the sound of Falcom's glorious soundtrack, and I could hardly have more fun when you combine the best elements of two of my favorite series. The graphics are great for a Vita game, the music is usually fantastic (and again, has songs that feel like they could be in either series), the characters are great when they're being focused on and not revolving around their "core trait" (e.g. side-stories or the like), and it's full of plot twists to keep you on your feet as well. I cried twice and the first time I cried a ton, it was one of the most emotional scenes ever, so even if I'm a sentimental crybaby, for a Japanese game to do that to me should say somethiing, haha. That being said, the game isn't for everyone and it's mostly lighthearted (so if you're the kind of person who cringes at "cheesy hero stories" it might not be for you...), but it was way better than I expected and I'm glad I picked this up on a whim of "I need more Falcom in my life while I wait for Trails SC"—it was worth it.
Other Honorable Mentions for Fun Games of 2015:
- Fast Racing NEO (Wii U) - Great racing game. Not F-Zero, but it's something.
- Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (Wii U) - A solid platformer/side-scroller game or whatever. Not amazing, but definitely fun.
- Bloodborne (PS4) - Definitely more fun for me than Dark Souls, and with less fake difficulty, but still some fundamental design issues preventing it from being a "great" game for me.
- Fire Emblem if: Black Kingdom, AKA Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest (3DS) - Ignoring the absolutely terrible/cringe-worthy elements, this game has some great gameplay and some solid music, and it was still fun... sometimes.
- Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain (PS4) - I didn't get to beat it, but Ground Zeroes was fun as was the beginning of this and next year will probably be a bit late to give shout-outs to this game (barring my "backlog award"), so yeah.
- StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void (PC) - For a series I'm actually quite a fan of, I didn't get to give much props to this game. It's definitely fun and even though the story was weak in some parts, I'm glad to finally see the conclusion, and I enjoyed reaching it.
- Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (3DS) - Why aren't you localized you glorious rhythm series you. Also, you could do without the annoying story, no offense.

Best: Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
I know this got a LOT of criticizing when it was released, and perhaps the wii version really was better, but I could not obtain the wii version and these days I find myself playing portable console games/computer games more than my consoles. The graphics aren't in top shape, sure, and you might not be able to see as much detail, but I find that I am actually very lenient with 3D graphics. I grew up in the 90's, so I guess I just grew super desensitized to sharp-edged polygons or whatever. I'm perfectly willing to forgive the blurriness, too, simply because the game has so much more to offer.
The only thing I can possibly think of that counts against the 3D variant is that in certain boss battles, where there's a ring around the arena and enemies outside the boundaries, (the battle with Metal Face at Gallahad Fortress being the absolute WORST offender) the game will actually start running at a reduced speed. Thankfully, though, input controls do not suffer at all when this happens. (Unlike Smash Bros...)
A lot of people say that the characters in XC had no personality, but I think they're blind or something, because I found something to love about each one, and they all feel like much fuller characters than some OTHER games I can think of.
Worst: Yokai Watch.
I can usually get through a game even if I'm not entirely enjoying it. Yokai Watch, however, not only had a very lacking (or nonexistent) storyline, but the entire gameplay generally felt like you were getting sent back and forth across the town for no logical reason other than to give the player something to do. Lemme recount the last time I booted the game up:

I might not own the game, or have played it for greater than 10 minutes, but I'm going to give my vote to Xenoblade Chronicles X. I would of gotten it, but I wanted older things now rather than later when they are even older. One day. Probably sometime in the middle of summer when I am doing the same thing I am now. A WHOLE LOT OF NOTHING. That's when I'll get the game.

Xenoblade X is my game of the year easily. Logging over 70 hours on the opening week which was a school week right before final exams should speak to how much this game sucked me in. Echoing Blazer's praises, the world is just MASSIVE. Each continent has so many little things to them that just makes them so enticing to explore. Running around these huge environments became almost breathtaking at points. And this game does a great job of showing how unforgiving the world is and how hard survival is. With so many high leveled enemies scattered about all the continents along with the weak ones give the place a much more natural feel to them and made it so no continent became invalidated after you've trained enough.
The combat is extremely fun and easily my favorite part about the game, I would go into it but there's a lot to say and I've already lost this write up once before lol. Now for my gripes with the game, the story and characters while fun were pretty shallow, though the side quests were much more fleshed out and can get shockingly dark at times. The UI can be cumbersome and the grinding gets pretty damn ridiculous post game. Most of my gripes don't actually appear until post game. Despite its various flaws Xenoblade X has easily landed as one of my favorite RPGs of all time.

I guuuuess I can respect your complaints/criticisms then, even though I still don't agree with them and think it's your fault for having a crappy playstyle and being such a new-generation pussy

Lemme recount the last time I booted the game up:
- Whisper tells me that he is feeling very anxious about all the new, unknown yokai showing up, and decides we need to find out more information about this matter.
- Somehow we come to the conclusion that asking one of the character's school teachers is a good idea
OBJECTIVE: Find your school teacher!- I find said teacher, who tells me about a mysterious crystal ball that shows us whatever we want. It's at a shrine across town.
- I travel across town to the shrine
- crystal ball is a dragon, who wants a bug. Thankfully I had said bug and did not have to go on a fetch quest.
- crystal ball shows me the abandoned hospital
- I travel ALL THE WAY ACROSS TOWN to the hospital to find out that an A-Rank Watch Door is barring my way, which means I need to upgrade my watch. AGAIN.
- Which means I have to travel BACK across town to the watch shop and talk to the dude
- and if the past few times I've upgraded my watch is anything like this one, it means I will be sent on ANOTHER town-crossing quest to defeat 3 yokai located in obscure places
- I shut the game off.
@Xenoblade, I totally respect the whole portability thing etc. and while I haven't played it, it's pretty much the same game in the end, so I don't think it could be that bad even if maybe the Wii version looked slightly better or whatever. I think what's most important is the fact that it's actually accessible now—as you said, you could not obtain the Wii version and quite frankly aside from the simple "not having a Wii or Wii U" deal there's the price of the game in the first place--Xenoblade 3D is fresh and cheaper so I feel like it's a lot easier to buy a new copy of that for $40 and enjoy the portability than buy a, idk, $50-60 (and I think at some point it was around $80) game for a system that's not as convenient to play (not to mention IIRC you had to use the Wiimote and Nunchuk or Classic Controller or something--point being, I feel like I'd personally just prefer the New 3DS...)
as for Yokai Watch, dang, I was considering moving it up a bit in my "might try this" list but that... doesn't really sound fun, lol. Guess I'm not missing out much after all? I'm curious if the sequel will be any better, but then again, not sure if just jumping into the sequel like that is a good idea.
I guess for now I'll just stick to my gut or whatever and stay away, as it seems more like a game catered to younger kids and/or RPG gamers who like "the grind" so to speak lol

The best - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Absolutely incredible. I love the Metal Gear franchise so much and gameplay wise this was bar none the best of the series. It went really light on the story in comparison but I think that's because of those filthy casuals who complained about the 45 minute cutscenes in MGS IV. Even if you've never played Metal Gear you will like this game.
The worst - Star Wars Battlefront - an absolute embarrassment especially when you compare it to its predecessors. It cut out all single player content like story mode and my personal favorite Galactic Conquest. It also ditched the class system for a stupidly basic and limited twist on the modern load out system. It also has a very limited number of maps ( 5 or 6 I think) and ditched the original multiplayer game types for some crappy replacements.
The disappointing - Halo 5 : Guardians - I love halo with a passion and having read the books I was excited to finally see Master Chiefs spartan team in a game. The disappointment comes when you only play 3 of the campaigns 15 levels as Chiefs team. Luckily the multiplayer is super fun so I still love the game.
The over hyped - Destiny the Taken King - It was supposed to be a brand new take on Destiny and drastically revolutionize the whole game. What we really got was just more of the same stuff. More armor, weapons, missions and strikes. So it was good but it was not at all the revolution it was hyped up to be.
I will not remove this until I complete the Ritual of the Mahjarrat quest in Runescape - started 4/18/15 - completed 12/20/15

solid picks and such, I'm not too familiar with the games but they don't sound like any kind of crazy unexpected opinions haha, it more or less matches what I kinda expected, haha
that being said, for whatever reason I think I expected a little more Nintendo from you, and... deja vu... I guess since this is an FE forum and Nintendo makes FE it just throws me off when every single one of your games isn't on a Nintendo system hahaha

(mostly Sony person here)
other than generally not remembering game experiences for very long I think the other problem is that I just haven't even played that many games in the year...
actually tbh I don't think I ever play a high variety of games within the span of 1 year, usually after getting one over with I don't particularly feel like taking on another anytime soon (or buying another anytime soon for that matter)
I do happen to have a number of unplayed PS3 games because of the Golden Week sale a while back however (obviously all of them are relatively old to have been worth buying on said sale though)

Yeah, don't get it. I really don't get why everyone was so pumped up about it. I liked the battle system, and at times the game was really funny, but the general gameplay mechanics (outside of battle) just really don't sit well with me. The demo really had me loving it, but the game itself failed to prove itself worthy of my time.
I can usually handle games intended for a younger audience. (Hey, fan of the GBA Hamtaro games, here. And Pokemon.) My issue is that I have developed an extreme grudge against games that repeatedly roadblock you for ill-explained (in-universe) reasons just so that the player doesn't sequence break, or so they'll go do some dumb thing the devs deem necessary. I prefer being able to explore and do things at my own pace. Alas, those games are becoming extinct these days. Especially among Pokemon games. ;

*diehard nintendo fan, here* I don't even own any other consoles. Okay, so I have a PS2, but it was only really bought so I can play my PS1 games, cuz my PS1 was dying at the time. (It is dead now, lol)
With everybody picking XC x as GoTY, I'm actually starting to rethink whether or not I want the game. Sadly, after being introduced to the series as a TOTAL FANTASY WORLD game, I found it very hard to process SUDDENLY EARTH.

WRPGs pretty much make themselves all about being able to explore and do things at your own pace from what I heard.
There are also MMOs but those are even more serious timesinks...(and if it's a certain type of game, player killers will be more than enough to keep you in place.)

haha I can but it depends, but ultimately I tend to enjoy games geared at older audiences, with some exceptions--Rhythm Heaven is just full of fun and charm such that I don't care, for instance, and Pokemon has enough nostalgia and such to keep me going even if it very much comes off as a joke/childish at times, lol
but there ARE games that don't do that, haha. Usually open-world games and the like (which as Merc mentioned, are a thing with WRPGs and such) but I know there are other games that don't needlessly stop you from going places etc. JUST to prevent "sequence breaking" haha. I DO like a bit of freedom/exploration after all, so while some limitations are okay (especially if there's *good* reasoning for it in-game), if it's too much, it can definitely get on one's nerves.

heh, I used to only get Nintendo consoles but eventually branched out and realized I was missing out on a lot of good games.
Granted, I still mostly play Nintendo games because they appeal to me and I think Nintendo and its developers make some of the best games out there, but now I also play a fair amount of PS games and some PC and even Xbox games if I feel they're good enough/worth my time XP.

I am usually not the sort to branch out to unknown games unless a friend or two can manage to convince me to do so. Smash Bros can also convince me to get a new game, but usually only if I actually use that character a lot. (It's how I got into Xenoblade.)
I don't consider PC games as a console...but I guess I should, huh? I do get PC games as well. XD Especially now that I can actually PLAY them. (My Windows XP comp could not.)
I was trying to be vague because spoilers. Allow me to clarify.

fair, Smash made me slightly more inclined to try Kid Icarus IIRC
nah PC isn't really a console, I guess I was thinking more in terms of "video game platforms in general", not just game consoles, haha. my bad!
also, as far as Xenoblade goes, I have a few things to say. First of all, Xenoblade Chronicles X is not a sequel. I am not sure who told you this or where you got this idea from, but it's NOT a sequel to Xenoblade. Anyone who told you this is wrong; if you got the idea yourself, then I'm afraid that's a misjudgment on you, which likely led to the other problems.
Second, Xenoblade Chronicles is only one game, so it's not really fair to set any sort of "rules" or "precedence" to the "series" ala other games. You could have some general ideas of what a "Xeno" game is because there are several games in that line--but these would have to be very basic as Xeno games only have some basic similar concepts (such as having sci-fi and fantasy elements or mech-like stuff) and aren't all directly related (though some games are related; kind of like how FE6 and 7 are related but separate from all the other FE games). Xenosaga and Xenoblade, for instance, play very differently, and Xenoblade feels way more "fantasy" to me. Xenoblade and Xenoblade X on the other hand only really share the gameplay concept: an action RPG with an "art palette" that takes place in an open world (and even then, Xenoblade X has a lot of differences, so it's not like the games play as similarly as say, FE7/FE8 do).
Third, I'm kind of confused by your post because it implies Xenoblade X takes place on Earth, which it doesn't. As far as we are concerned, it takes place in a completely different universe than Xenoblade, on a very fantasy-like planet called Mira.
I guess my main "wait, what? XD" reaction was to this though:
Since as I mentioned, not only is Xenoblade X not a sequel (it's a spiritual successor, FYI), but I don't remember them ever implying it was. I guess the name could be slightly confusing, but at least for me since it doesn't have a "2" on it (kind of like Monster Hunter X isn't the sequel to Monster Hunter 4--the sequel would be Monster Hunter 5) I presumed it wasn't a sequel until told otherwise. So I guess I'm kind of confused how you came up with the expectations, but regardless, I am sorry to hear you were disappointed. And hopefully Nintendo and co. do a better job of making it clear what their games/intentions are so they don't confuse fans.
With "SMTxFE", with Xeno X, with the Smash ballot, and with lots more, it seems like Nintendo isn't making things clear, some people jump to conclusions/misunderstand, and then spread that to everyone else, making everyone believe things like "we're going to get 5 Smash characters from the ballot!" when it's just not true, haha. Granted, that's not entirely their fault, but if they made it clear in the first place by saying stuff like "this does not suggest anything about the game itself" or "we will pick one character from the Smash ballot" or "Xenoblade X is not a sequel", then I think people wouldn't have to jump to conclusions on their own/believe in whatever rumors/lies are going around, lol. (tl;dr, COME ON NINTENDO)
Anyway, to be honest, if you liked Xenoblade Chronicles for the story, then you are probably better off not getting it--like I said, Xeno X is only a spiritual successor, so not only does it not have Shulk etc., but in terms of what drives the game/how it is designed, it is very different. That doesn't make it bad per se, but as a result the story is not a focus and you won't have your merry band of mostly-teenage heroes running around looking for the ultimate weapon/secret power or whatever to defeat the evil bad guy--it's got a completely different setup, and it's more for people who liked the gameplay of Xenoblade Chronicles, not for people who liked it for its general RPG qualities (no offense, but Xenoblade was pretty much just "another fantasy RPG" but with a unique battle system, haha--still a great game, but that's not quite what Xeno X is, so if you're expecting that, you'll probably feel like you're wasting money, and I don't want to recommend a game to someone just because I liked it when I think they won't, lol).
