I find that for me, non-mounted axe users suck with two exceptions in the games I've played: Ross and Hector (Well, and Nolan in early game). All the other axe users have high damage and maybe somewhat high health, but takes a lot of damage, can't dodge, and have such poor chances of hitting they just aren't worthwhile. I absolutely abuse units with high critical chances. Using Gamble and a Killing Edge with a Trueblade can actually give you a 100% chance of critical, and then if you get attacked you'll still probably critical. High speed and/or high movement classes also seem to excel with me... except for Fiona. I also seem to always choose a favorite thief who by the end of the game can kill anyone. Finally, I've always liked anima mages, but not so much light and dark magic users.
I'd be curious to see what other people think about the different classes.

Beserkers, Warriors, Heroes, Generals. They all ruled with axes.
In FE5 there were Marty, Othin, Dashin, all great non-mounted units who used axes.
In FE6 to FE8, there is just a long list of great pirates, fighters, and a brigand.
Mymirdons are best. Always male, seeing as how all the females but Myreeta(?) sucked.
Thieves are for stealing, I usually have a favorite, and it's usually male.
Pegasus Knights are great, Wyvern riders are good Pegasus support.
Generals rule, Paladins are great in every game but FE8, wherein Great Knights are better.
Healers? lol, only ever used them in FE5.
Magic users? Usually have just one mage.
Archers? Same as mage, just one. Usually they work together.
I play defensive turn offensive strategy, so. It works perfect for me.

Oops, forgot about armored Axe users. They're good in combat, but in the GBA games they can't fight cause they can't get to the battles. Mounted units just tend to kick butt. Also, I've only played #'s 7,8, 10 and little bit of 6 plus an absolutely miniscule amount of 9. Axe users just tend to suck for me. Or hate me. Even with a supposed 90% chance of hitting, the real % of hits is about.... 10-15% LITTERALLY. Again, Hector and Ross are exceptions. They kick butt. And Nolan's also an exception, he's just not that great a unit. Boyd is less sucky than most for me, but still pretty sucky. I tend to use healers that use staves as secondary items. It's way too hard to train first tier healers. Generals are good, but again, in GBA I just can't get them there. Peg knights don't tend to be too good, but after/ just before class change they're amazing. As for archers, if they don't have another weapon to use and crossbows are unavailable, I just don't use them. The only archers in the GBA games that I use are those who can actually get swords. Wow, I missed a lot in my first post. Here's hoping I didn't forget more.

Healers are my favorite class... believe it or not. I don't know what I'd do without them. Usually, having them makes a difference between a win and a loss.
Magicians... I'd guess Bishops are my favorite, seeing how I like being resistant to magic more often than striking them with magic. Bishops are cool.
Sages are my second favorite... tied with Druids... although I tend to like Anima over Elder magic. Actually, make room for the Valkyries. Traveling healers for the win!
Paladins are my favorite physical class for being so balanced, able to travel across long distances, and just looking cool aesthetically. However, their stat caps are somewhat limited.
Following them are either Swordmasters or Heroes. I just like sword users overall.
Thieves are cool, I guess. Their experience given is bigger than what the unpromoted units give you... and their ability to steal and lockpick... they are unique and indeed amazing to have. Sure, in combat they are not too great, but they're still handy to have, especially in castle levels.
Wyvern Lords and Falcoknights... being fliers and all are just amazing. Unfortunately, they falter to arrows...
Speaking of arrows, Snipers have to be the coolest class in game! Although their usage is limited... they strike criticals from afar and can be useful at times, although Nomad Troopers outshine them in this field. But still, I like Snipers.
Generals are unfortunately too slow for me. They are SUPPOSED to be frontline walls, but their lack of movement is VERY counter-productive to what they are supposed to do.

Heroes are my favourite unit xD . Just for their all-around balance, and killing prowess.

I absolutely love myrmidons. Inability to be hit and high critical for the win. Maybe paladins or heroes after myrmidons. I also love Sages.

I definitely need Myrmidon, Mercenary, and a Mage. Healers are very useful but I wouldn't stock up on them so much because their offensive abiltities are limited.
I can definitely live without knights/generals because they are kind of slow (lacking in movement) and they fight slowly (since they don't double they often times don't kill), Cavaliers/Paladins don't really excel in anything too often but they have high movement and are a good "charging force" which I like.
