Besides that, any tips for making it thru this game? The early FE games look like they're harder to me...

Make sure, absolutely, positively sure, that on escape chapters Leaf is the last to go. Anyone left on the map disappears basically until the game is over.
Dagda is awesome. Eyvel is not.
I'm not aware of a translation patch with readable menus, unfortunately. I think one is being worked on, though. You'll just have to figure them out yourself, unfortunately.

Also thanks, I was wondering what the hell the point of capturing was since it cut my stats as if rescuing.

The first few chapters can be pretty tough, so I'd capture all the weapons and vulneraries you can. Tip: Vulneraries heal all HP in this game, so be sure to grab as many as you can.
Mounted units are forced to dismount on indoor chapters, and all except bow knights are forced to use swords. So I occasionally dismount people like Finn in the early game to work on sword level (it's pretty perfect considering all the axes that are always in early FE chapters). Speaking of Finn, his hero lance is fantastic for capturing.
I usually got my money by selling broken weapons that I didn't want to repair. This doesn't get much, but it's better than nothing. (Yes, weapons, when they hit 0 uses, become "broken" and can be repaired with the Repair staff.)
Other random things:
1. You cannot have 0% or 100% hit. So no, you will never have a perfect chance of dodging or hitting. You'll miss with plenty of 99%s and get hit by plenty of 1%s.
2. Status effects last the whole map unless you restore it with a Restore staff (and this game has poison, sleep, etc).
3. Reaffirming Dagda as being cool. Make sure he's got some vulneraries and weapons at all times. Also he's great for capturing.

Another tip: don't focus on too few units because of fatigue. It shouldn't be a huge problem so long as you aren't trying to use a small set of units. Again, enemies are pretty weak, so just use who's good while they're good and you should be fine.

I'm not sure what type of RNG it uses, but it's totally brutal and it'll screw you over a ton. The game's difficult but it's a blast to play through. Are you using save states? I actually haven't managed to beat this game without using them yet...granted I've only beaten it once.

The RNG for awakening is flawed too but not as much as this game >w>;;

Funny, I'm bored with Fe4 now. I felt the replayability was a bit lacking.

Anyhow, I suggest finishing it, if only so you can say you beat FE5, haha.
Signature thanks to Shu.

Like when Eyvel gets 2 consecutive hits on an enemy who's capable of countering, even tho she has no brave weapon. And just now, Dagda swung his hammer at a bow brigand (whatever you call them) THREE times. What the hell is going on >w> does the game just make up combat rules as it goes along?
EDIT: Now one of my fighters struck first during the enemy turn. I don't think this game knows what it's doing >w> or it has some really confusing mechanics. Also Eyvel just pulled a triple-hitter on me as well.

Dagda has Charge, which: Initiates another round of combat if user's Attack Speed and HP are greater than the enemy's
And Eyvel has Continue, which initiates another hit, using attack speed as a %. (Pretty much Adept of the past gen)
Was it Halvan who attacked first on enemy phase? That's because of Ambush. It's the old gen's version of Vantage. Also, Halvan's brave axe + Ambush = really fun

That should help!^
