So, I've finally decided to visit the past and played the first chapter of Thracia 776. So far I like it a lot, but the translation patch is glitching stuff on menus and pre-battle info screens (hit, MT, def, etc.)

Besides that, any tips for making it thru this game? The early FE games look like they're harder to me...

Without giving you too major spoilers: you never get money in this game, and buying stuff is really expensive, so basically all of your equipment must be stolen off of enemies. This isn't really an issue for FE5, though, since the difficulty here comes from everything but enemies being any good at fighting.

Make sure, absolutely, positively sure, that on escape chapters Leaf is the last to go. Anyone left on the map disappears basically until the game is over.

Dagda is awesome. Eyvel is not.

I'm not aware of a translation patch with readable menus, unfortunately. I think one is being worked on, though. You'll just have to figure them out yourself, unfortunately.

Well I have is half figured out, but I hate that the pre-battle display is the extended verion (shows atk and def instead of damage) And I don't think there's an option to condense it like the GBA games.
Also thanks, I was wondering what the hell the point of capturing was since it cut my stats as if rescuing.

There are also some people you recruit via capturing and holding until the chapter is over.

Rujio gave some solid advice. And no, you cannot change the battle menus to the GBA version ones. All the old FEs do this, I think.

The first few chapters can be pretty tough, so I'd capture all the weapons and vulneraries you can. Tip: Vulneraries heal all HP in this game, so be sure to grab as many as you can.

Mounted units are forced to dismount on indoor chapters, and all except bow knights are forced to use swords. So I occasionally dismount people like Finn in the early game to work on sword level (it's pretty perfect considering all the axes that are always in early FE chapters). Speaking of Finn, his hero lance is fantastic for capturing.

I usually got my money by selling broken weapons that I didn't want to repair. This doesn't get much, but it's better than nothing. (Yes, weapons, when they hit 0 uses, become "broken" and can be repaired with the Repair staff.)

Other random things:

1. You cannot have 0% or 100% hit. So no, you will never have a perfect chance of dodging or hitting. You'll miss with plenty of 99%s and get hit by plenty of 1%s.

2. Status effects last the whole map unless you restore it with a Restore staff (and this game has poison, sleep, etc).

3. Reaffirming Dagda as being cool. Make sure he's got some vulneraries and weapons at all times. Also he's great for capturing.

Oh, I totally forgot about the 1-99 HIT thing. THAT INCLUDES STAVES. Yes, you can miss with heal. I think save states are forgivable here.

Another tip: don't focus on too few units because of fatigue. It shouldn't be a huge problem so long as you aren't trying to use a small set of units. Again, enemies are pretty weak, so just use who's good while they're good and you should be fine.

Holy crap I forgot heal could miss...I think it stops missing once your staff users get better though. I remember toward the end of the game never missing with healing staffs, but I could be wrong and just got incredibly lucky or something.

OH GOD FATIGUE. The horror...

Yea I read up on fatigue and all that. Sounds like this game is pretty brutal actually...units getting too tired to fight, no cash, stealing all your goods, heal can MISS (durr how do I use this staff do I bonk you with it). What did I get myself into.

Still think it's one of the coolest FE games just in terms of plot and how it works into the chapters. Definitely consulted a guide once or twice though.

FE5 did a far better job of telling a story with the gameplay than any other FE, and its difficulty comes largely from dealing with unusual/unexpected situations. It's certainly one of the series' gems.

Jesus you guys weren't kidding about the shitty RNG. God, I'm missing more than the enemy is, and I have 80+ hit most of the time. Is this the FE that used like 2 RNGs and averaged them or something?

I may not have understood the plot much (shoddy translations) but the game does an excellent job of putting the player into situations that are pretty spot on to what the story is talking about.

I'm not sure what type of RNG it uses, but it's totally brutal and it'll screw you over a ton. The game's difficult but it's a blast to play through. Are you using save states? I actually haven't managed to beat this game without using them yet...granted I've only beaten it once.

This game uses a 1RN system, while everything after it uses a 2RN system. That means that 80 HIT here is equivalent to what you're used to 68 meaning.

*le sigh* I see lots of rage in my future. I get steamed when RNG screws me. Like when in Awakening, a general with only 30 skill triggers Pavise 4 times in a row.

i still haven't beaten this one, i keep giving up on it out of boredom or wanting to play fe4(best fire emblem imo), so what i'm getting from this thread is play it even though it's brutally impossible?

I'd say occasionally unfair, but definitely not impossible. Ruijo wasn't kidding-- the enemies really don't have good stats ever. Some bosses do, but that's about it. There's just some BS RNG and situations you find yourself in. Harder modes of the latest FE games (11, 12 and 13) are definitely on par or harder than Fe5. IMO, anyway.

Funny, I'm bored with Fe4 now. I felt the replayability was a bit lacking.

What I did was I took advantage of early game when it's slightly more manageable and used that to do a lot of capturing and other stuff, later on such tactics often become a real pain in the butt... and looking up info beforehand also helps, I wasn't familiar with the game so I kinda had to when it came to recruiting people (especially with the somewhat lackluster story-telling and translations that glitched up or just weren't translated well...).

Anyhow, I suggest finishing it, if only so you can say you beat FE5, haha.

Ok now I'm running into some really confusing stuff >w>
Like when Eyvel gets 2 consecutive hits on an enemy who's capable of countering, even tho she has no brave weapon. And just now, Dagda swung his hammer at a bow brigand (whatever you call them) THREE times. What the hell is going on >w> does the game just make up combat rules as it goes along?

EDIT: Now one of my fighters struck first during the enemy turn. I don't think this game knows what it's doing >w> or it has some really confusing mechanics. Also Eyvel just pulled a triple-hitter on me as well.

Those would be skills.

Dagda has Charge, which: Initiates another round of combat if user's Attack Speed and HP are greater than the enemy's

And Eyvel has Continue, which initiates another hit, using attack speed as a %. (Pretty much Adept of the past gen)

Was it Halvan who attacked first on enemy phase? That's because of Ambush. It's the old gen's version of Vantage. Also, Halvan's brave axe + Ambush = really fun

http://serenesforest.../fe5/skill.html

That should help!^
