Yu-Gi-Oh. Fire Emblem. Both are fantastic role-playing games. At least, I grew up with both, and I enjoyed them both very much. I'm not entirely sure of the hacking details, but I'd imagine this would possible require a hex of some sort if you want the game to get real unique.
But why?
Why not just make it simple. Here's my idea, basically it would be greatly based on either one of the two following ideas.
-Summons (similar to shaman or druids or whichever character in the fe series summons characters)
Each Player is possibly limited to what they can summon. (i say possibly, because it is up for grabs based upon hacking abilities. As I said I am clueless to how much work or how much of this is actually possible) I.E Certain classes can only use spells, or traps, or monsters, or some can use more than one. Probably your main hero/es will be able to use all three.
This will require some more thoughts, as I am not entirely sure how we can manage multiple summons. Obviously staying true to the game it should require a limitation of 5. However, it may leave you a bit overpowered. So this Requires discussion.
When a player uses a card, it is shown on the map.
This will require a lot of spriting. But I am pretty quick on the job. and I have a friend who might be interested in helping.
-And after writing that... I somehow forgot the other one. This will be updated when it comes back to me.
...Perhaps. Okay, here's another idea for the yugioh project) your playable characters actually attack but their weapons are the cards, so they are included in the animation summoning the card and the card comes out and attacks. rather then being a movable, playable summon.
The second idea (non-yugioh) would be roleplaying themed.
By this I mean we would open up a roleplaying thread, and follow that story and dialogue in-game.
Thanks for your time,
Magix.

Well one of them is a hacking idea, so I think it's okay.
I used to love Yu-Gi-Oh but the hype amongst common people died down a little at some point. I know it's still popular amongst certain people though so I'm sure people would enjoy this.
As for getting summons to work, it's a little difficult to get it to work on normal chapters but perhaps with a little event/ASM manipulation it'd be possible. On the topic of summons, perhaps just having one main character and all other "characters" be summons or something would work. And the ability to sacrifice characters/summons for more characters/summons would be cool, though I'm not sure how that'd work.

I used to as well! However I noticed there is an enormous community that play games like dueling network or ygopro. (online versions of the game)
Yea, I've heard things about hexing. I'm sure this would be more of a hexing deal if we were to go into sacrifices and adding random card selecting.
I'd imagine it would be cool to simply, as you said, do it as an event type hack. Or simply I'm not sure what these are called? Maybe mini hack? In which it's only one level you play and then it's over. Kind of like a mini-game. AT least for starters. In which there will be a shop where you can buy certain "cards" And those will be the animations made.
I like what you mentioned about 1 character and the rest summons. Or perhaps a couple playable characters with the maximum of 1 summon (wishful thinking would be three but don't think that would be reasonable)
I think it might actually be possible to do it simply and efficiently. I'll have to learn the basics first though. haha ha ... ._.
Anyways, I really appreciate the input. I love discussing ideas with others! :]

lol, "hexing". No offense, but no one really says that, haha. Hex editing, FYI, is just like editing the data in its simplest form. You can edit pretty much any file using a hex editor--it's just a way of viewing something in hexadecimal (as opposed to another number system, such as binary, decimal, octal, etc.).
A small or mini-hack, whatever, there's no specific term, haha. And those can be cool but then again it can also be a lot of work to create something and not go very far with it, you know? In fact, that's why some game developers tend to invent filler content of sorts to make a game longer by reusing content and maximizing the basis of gameplay, if you get what I mean--they don't want their hard work to "go to waste", so to speak.
Regardless, hacking in such ideas isn't really basic stuff, it'll either take a lot of learning or perhaps another basis/system besides using a hack, like another game making program or something.
And I'm just throwing out my unarticulated thoughts back~
