So, I noticed I can capture enemies. What exactly do I gain from this? I remember hearing about stealing items..
Also, I captured someone named Shiva. I heard he joins me later if I didn't kill him. Does Capturing=Killing in this?

An enemy will only really count as a killed enemy once you release it. So if you just capture it, it doesn't count as a kill yet.
And by capturing, you can indeed take items off of the unit you've captured. Very handy, especially early in the game when you need the weapons and don't really have and money yet.

It might not be completely obvious, but you can take a captured character's items by using the Trade menu and toggling the Trade cursor until it hovers over the captured character.

Also certain characters can be recruited by capturing and keeping them (Rivis says hi)
