Out of all the anime's that aren't finished...

I personally think it's Naruto. If you're like me, you pay attention to plot holes. And Naruto is FULL of em. Granted, I'll admit. I think Naruto has some pretty sick stylish fight scenes. But as far as it having an engaging story? I don't really see it.
Now. Why did I pick Naruto over say, One Piece?
Because One Piece actually keeps me interested. I can watch an episode of One Piece more than once. Now, I'm not gonna act like every character in One Piece is extremely memorable. Cause they're not. Zoro is probably one of the coolest anime characters I've seen. Period. But in an anime with 500+ episodes...Can you really expect me to remember every character?
Why not Bleach? Bleach is finished. Lol
Why not [insert name of anime here]?
Simple. Because EVERYONE knows what Naruto is where I live. People who don't even watch anime know what Naruto is. That's how popular it is.
Do I think Naruto is a bad anime? Not really, no. Do I think it's as good an anime as people make it out to be? Not really, no.

I feel that it has less to do with episode count and more to do with how memorable the character is or how many characters there are (Legend of Galactic Heroes has like, 600 named characters or something >_>)
I believe in judgment of humans through their judgment of fiction, for nothing else tells better of their disposition freed from apprehension.

that and because there's a reason why I lost interest in the first place (it got boring too fast)
most of it is probably from second-hand information from haters who actually did look at it though

Why? Well first thing is that the main character doesn't get any development. He is the same character throughout the entire story. Look at Naruto, you can't say Naruto was the same at the beginning of the anime as he is now. The side characters get more development than Natsu. Also "friendship power" not that I'm saying this is a bad thing, but it is used everytime so much that I find very little suspense left in the action. I know they are going to win. At least in Naruto I can expect some major character to get injured/die.

I'll preface by saying I hate the concept of fanservice/crude adult jokes as a sale device. And this might already throw me out of the demographic as that's about half the show (the other half being jokes on culture and language, which I catch). The humour is pretty bland, dull, and predictable...and probably a bit too close to Excel Saga for my liking. Almost all jokes are overblown. It's like the Family Guy of anime. I recall about a third the time I watched was a reaction of "Alright, here we go again...let's just go through it".
I guess the way to put it is that it's a pretty shallow show and doesn't offer much outside a select non-unique style that doesn't bring much to the table. Even when it get serious. It just piles on jokes and that apply to the average anime fan.

lol, interesting, don't think it's anything like that here
also I know almost every OP character but I'm VERY bad with names in generals so it may take the first letter or two for me to remember them, but that's more of a personal issue of mine. in general, One Piece characters get plenty of development and are unique in their own way.
Anyhow, while Naruto is definitely overrated, I think that Fairy Tail takes the throne by just a slight bit. First of all, for an anime to be overrated, I feel like it has to be relatively well-known; if a few people like an anime a lot, it doesn't seem overrated to me, that's just a normal small amount of people liking something more than others. So that's why I'd go with one of the bigger ones.
As for why FT... ShadowCero pretty much summed it up. Natsu gets very little development despite being the main character: his development is mainly in strength, and, even at that, sometimes I feel like they don't actually get much stronger. ALso, one of the HUGE criticisms of Fairy Tail is the "nakama" power, AKA "friendship power"--it's not very suspenseful, it's annoying, and... yeah.
As for why I still like the anime and am ironically watching it right now, it's funny (or at least it was, not as much ATM), I love fire, it's well-animated, and the greatest two reasons, it looks cool and sounds cool. Graphically speaking, I feel like the anime is relatively high quality (or else I just watch poor animation skills, like One Piece--One Piece is amazing, but the animators are lazy as hell and don't do the manga justice), and I'm easily attracted by lots of flames and lightning and cool-looking battles, because that's the kid part of me taking over. As for the music, Fairy Tail's musical composer is amazing IMO, and again, I'm easily attracted by great music, I can even overlook certain flaws if the music is good enough (granted music won't carry me through a game or anime but it'll definitely get me hyped), so that's that XP.
Signature thanks to Shu.

^^^Yeah, it's a gag show focusing on parodying various shows. Don't think that qualifies as fanservice. |
Eh. Opinions I guess. I knew this one would generate some interesting thoughts (interesting how I only noticed it 10 days after because of the "2" in the date of 22nd on my clock...).
I'd suggest that a character's who's defining trait is "under the radar" fanservice masochism character probably does have a lot to do with it. It was eye rolling and, honestly, if I showed that to a non-anime knowledgeable friend, I'd have no room or real ability to defend it other than "that's not most shows". Over the course of a night of Arkham Horror (which was an all-nighter, so probably 24-30 episodes), there were enough cases of awkward "WTF" moments there that it was definitely part of the series. Did I oversell it? Probably, since it was all night (which reduces memory of non-weird things), it was Arkham Horror (so my attention was divided between the laptop screen and a massive board), and I admit it's closer to Excel Saga than it is bouncing boobs. Though, for a series which is perpetually ranked ludicrous in standings for best show, I was thoroughly underwhelmed...enough so that it really stands out as a show that I'd think of as overrated, since it can fall so far. Most long runners are mixed in reaction, while this one had massive appeal near unanimously.
I'll also admit I'm not the average fan either. I like the Evangelions, the Utenas...the Lains. Shows that other would probably describe as weird. So this could be a byproduct that I like anime for different reasons (that, at least historically, it used to push the envelope of "what is our genre" more than other genres) than others.

Evangelion and Utena are/were(I don't know if the latter is still considered so) insanely popular though (and the former has crazy merchandising power.) |
I never suggested they weren't, merely that the description is probably still summed up as "weird" or "confusing". If fact, I find it hard to They're philosophy heavy shows which, while they're appealing and popular, generally are not straight forward shows (which seems intentional at times. If memory serves, Anno actually wrote up End of Evangelion as a giant middle finger to his fans and Utena's director was famous for saying "The reason Utena turns into a car in the movie is because I really wanted to turn a cute girl into a car."). The fact that they and Lain are high ranking for me indicates that I do not enjoy straight forward shows and that, if Gintama is played as a linear show with no real emphasis on working on that part of it, it may impact my views as what I value from a show isn't the same as what you or ShadowCero may, for example.
Edit - Quite amusingly, my search of TVtropes led me to a page where all three were listed as examples of shows intended to not make sense.

From what you just said I don't think it is fair to call a show overrated because it doesn't fit your viewing pleasure. At least there are actual problem with Fairy Tail and Naruto that if changed could make it a better show while still staying the same type of show. |
Maybe, but with shows like Naruto or even the fanservice ones, after I think "Well, I didn't like it but I understand that, if you liked this genre, it could be enjoyable". Here I get "...What the hell was that?".
