Have you edited the events yet? I think it may be that the game gets confused because it's trying to preform the default events for that chapter which are designed for the default map and not the one you made. I think you would need to change the events for that chapter for your map to work.
I will not remove this until I complete the Ritual of the Mahjarrat quest in Runescape - started 4/18/15 - completed 12/20/15

Ahhh that makes sense. The guide makes it sound like doing the events are just an option, but what you said makes sense. Thanks a bunch for the help, I'm going to give that a try in the morning.

You can actually insert a map without editing events, the worst that could happen is the units would be placed in weird places. I wouldn't think it would crash the game, unless maybe it were smaller than the original map and it's trying to access a spot which doesn't exist, which wouldn't be the case since the FE8 prologue map is the smallest possible size in the GBA FE games.
I have, after all, made custom maps for my old project Gorilla Gadek SG which used the existing events, but in that case, the maps were the exact same size and built around the existing events.
One thing you'd probably want to check is to make sure you didn't accidentally typo the pointer. If that turns out to be okay, you'll want to check to make sure you encoded the map you inserted properly when you saved it for insert. If you saved the map you inserted incorrectly, it would certainly cause issues when the game tries to use it.
