how long must units wait next to eachother to become lovers? I know they can be paired through certain conversations during the chapters, but if you aren't able to do that, how long must you keep the two units together? also, what is the "give" option supposed to do? sorry, i'm new to fe4 xD

It's sort of like supports in Fe7 and such. Meaning, it takes a long f*cking time. And, similarly, you can only gain so many "lover points" per chapter.
A good way to gauge this is to have two units you wish to pair stay near each other, and then periodically check the Fortune Teller inside any one of your castles. He'll tell you if your characters are advancing their feelings toward each other.
Just a tip, the first couple love things he tells you are:
"You have no feelings for anybody" which advances to "'character name' is on your mind", and so forth.
The Give option allows lovers to give ALL of their money to their spouse. Ex: Cuan and Ethlin are lovers. They can give money to each other. Thieves can also use Give to hand out money to anyone, not just his or her lover.
Hope that helps a bit.

thanks! that cleared alot up. do you have an estimate as to how many turns the characters have to wait next to eachother? is it around 50? 100? 150?

there's a certain amount of love points needed they are...
* 0 - 199: No feelings for anybody.
* 200 - 299: Feelings for...
* 300 - 399: Likes...
* 400 - 499: Loves...
* 500: Is married to...
To make characters fall in love, the couple must obtain 500 love points. These are obtained by one of four ways:
1. Doing nothing- some couples come with a set number of love points.
2. Being out in the same map- different couples gain differing amounts of love points each turn.
3. Having characters wait adjacent to one another- this increases love points by exactly 5 points each turn.
4. Making certain characters talk- these may give a large fixed boost to love points (see Events section).

Just to clarify, lover points stop increasing once you go past Turn 50, which might be important for players who take it slowly (like me). This doesn't affect the "lover conversations" though, just the growth from waiting around.

And not to forget, there's a enwy system, too. Example: Lackhe stands in the middle, Johan to the right and Johalva to the left. Since Johalva is more Lackhes type of man, she is more attatched by him, than on Johan. This system works for many other too. So be careful.

Check serenesforest.net. They tell you about things like the jealousy system and when you should wait to become lovers so as to get items, etc.

Serenes Forest has everything lol
Personally I don't care about the lover system. It sounds too complex for me and I don't want to learn about it so I can get the best lovers or whatever crap. I'm just not cut out for this lol. No wonder I still haven't beaten FE4... haha.

It's only a bit more complicated than the support systems in FE6-10. If you can utilise those, there's no reason you can't utilise FE4's lover system.

1. FE6-8 supports do this.
2. FE10 supports do this.
3. FE6-8 and FE10 supports do this.
4. No other FE does this, but FE players should know that talking does useful things : P
Now, the inheritance system that follows after this can get a bit messy, but you don't really need to pay attention to it unless you're hardcore.
