Don't actually discuss football teams here. I just have a question about it. Go ahead and move it if you think it should be in the sports section.

Why is a sport where [enter exact high percentage here]% of the time the ball, which isn't a ball, but an egg, is touched with the hands, called football?

It is about a sports, so I think it's more appropriate in sports.

Basically, rugby was also called football once, and this developed from rugby into another game (which is quite different), but kept the 'football' moniker.

You mean it downgraded from rugby into a different game... not developed...

I don't know... Then why is that sport where you actually use your feet 100% of the time (except Suarez, he likes mixing it with handball) also called football?

I blame the Americans.

I thought there was a thread for this.

And I've played rugby before...it's fun, but I don't like it more than American Football, hell no.

I don't know why it's called Football, but I personally love all the depth at each individual position of each individual team, and everything that goes on. The positions are all different and each player has way different qualities and strengths even though they play the same position. It's great, and you CAN break it down like that.

American football is played like a series of advertising jingles, while football is played more like jazz XD

Well yeah, but it goes deeper than that.

Like at running back, example.

Adrian Peterson is without a doubt one of the best power runners in the world. The issue with him is that he fumbles, way more than any other back in the pros.
Which is why we had Chester Taylor at second string. He's good enough to be a starter for many other teams, and he's had more experience than Peterson, so he dosen't fumble the ball really ever. So we can put him in and also get production out of that position. He can also double as a reciever, adding another threat the defensive players need to take care of. However, he dosen't have the power or speed of Peterson, so he isn't the starter.

Minnesota Vikings, btw.

But the same still happens in sports like football and basketball, for similar reasons.

Maybe, but the depth adds because there are seperate teams for Defense and Offense...that's a crapload of positions. I think it adds to the fun, too, because again your packages are different, so you can utilize not only the starters, but the second and third string players as well. So backups aren't just backups.
