Well, I compose music. Mainly as a hobby of mine, nothing too special.

So, I was wondering what you guys think. I have 2 recent pieces and 4 old pieces.
I'll only upload the new ones because I'm not that proud of my old ones.

Midi formats for size.

Hmmm, nice works.

Igniparous is a pretty ambiental piece, gives off a feeling of not knowing what to expect, then it grows out of nowhere. Until 1:40 ish. Then it becomes a happy piece, I would say, the movement of viola there gives it a mystic flavor, but seems like a different piece until it breaks into something heavy as heck. It is a strong, very powerful piece, it controls our feelings as it goes, until the gran finale. If anything, I would just expect it to have a bang. Nice work nonetheless.

Something or Rather is a good theme for a time of darkness, I would say. Like the start of a game, the plot is being introduced, you learn of the dark deeds, and dark times, it goes on like this, with a dark feeling. And then it becomes something else, but...same line, just, very diverse, like your last piece.

Both are pretty dark I see, would you call that your style? It is good, you know what you're doing. Nice works, dude. ^__^

Wow. My one complaint is that Igniparous takes too long to become interesting.

And I want your percussion skills. As well as your ability to combine weird sets of instruments.

Hmmm, yeah I guess it does sound a bit long.

Well, myself being a percussionist helps in writing the percussion.

Igniparous (sp) is a bit creepy (so you were successful with that) and the ringing quickly gets annoying (to me anyway).

I can't say this is in the right forum but I can't think of a better forum so it stays.

Yeah, I couldn't find anywhere else.

That ringing is well, not really ringing it's just a really high violin chord and the midi engine I use doesn't handle it too well.

Anvil Studio is a good all-around MIDI editing program although getting used to it for composing might be a tiny bit difficult for some people.

Cool, a fellow musician! Nice to see one here!

Anyway, let me review the two songs:

Igniparous, I like the start up for it. The beginning of it did its job of gettin' that creepy, dark haunting feeling down. I was quite taken away when the song suddenly changed with the powerful kettledrums while still keeping hte original creepy feel. Overall a nice original piece.

Something or Rather - Ah man, I'm diggin 'this already. I'm a fanboy of military-style battle themes. I do like the brass bass line of of "Dun-Dun-Dun" chords. The waltz like tempo of 3/4 was pretty unexpect but I like it. For some reason, during the first flute melody, I felt I was at an ancient castle that has been long since forgotten by even time itself.
Ending came along nice but i wish it could had lasted a bit longer.

Overall, very nice works. I hope to see more man!

Thank you, I've been recently thinking of making something new.

I need to mess around on my piano a bit more before I get something solid, but hopefully within the next few weeks I'll get something down.

Well, I've just had a fantastic idea for a desert type theme.

If you want I can post the main ideas here.

EDIT: OK well desert didn't turn out so right, so I changed the same ideas into a big sorta fight thing.

Well, if someone can come up with a basic melody, we could trade it around and make different parts. Well, assuming our programs decide to work decently together. But, for example, I excel at string instruments, while failing pretty hard with others, so I could write a string part to a larger song.

What programs do you guys use? I use Finale Printmusic.

I use Anvil Studio because it's free easy to use and compatible. I use to use some Finale programs but compatibility issues were annoying...

I use Guitar Pro 5, which a friend gave me, and Sibelius.

I'll have to get around to looking at Anvil Studio.
That'll be my job tonight then I guess.

How long ago did you use Finale? I've found that the 2010 versions don't have compatibility issues, although the 09 versions did.

I assume all of them can save and load .mid files?

Yes they can. I also use Notation to read the midi files as a score.
