General gets it's great shield ability and that lousy 1 movement range will not effect things that much.
Palidans in FE8 are bad cause they have crappier caps than Great Knights and they loose axe usage.
That +2 movement range isn't that special anyway.

Usefulness, Great Knight. As Generals are pretty useless in FE8. Generals are the units that are slower, but come in and own. However, FE8 is way too easy, and every unit owns, thus the class is kinda pointless. |
I repeat this, and add that Paladins are just horrible in FE8.

Paladins > GK > General
You don't need axes to beat the shit out of everyone.

Greater movement makes them more useful. FE8 isn't that hard that you need to defend so much. Great Knights can go in and pummel for the most part while still protecting themself. To me they're almost the same class but one is on horse.
I'd be more specific but I don't think I need to. If someone wants to really go nuts about saying Generals are better then be my guest...

First off, I'll address the slayer weapons. How often will you run into either weapon? And will it be accurate enough to put a dent in the GK's epic armor? Moreso yet, would you even be dumb enough to send one at that enemy?
Now I'll address the caps.
First off, caps don't matter. Stats do. If you're doing a non-tower/skirmish/ruin/arena run, the most for any ordinary unit not named Seth, Franz, Moulder, Vanessa, and Lute will be 20/10. You're not capping anything on 20/10.
For Gilliam to max his shit, he needs to be higher than Lv. 20/10, which brings up his failure at not being able to double enemies, and getting doubled by everyone and their mom while having AVERAGE (for an armor) defense at a high level. Then there's also the fact that he's not leveling up early on, because every enemy and their mom used axes, and he's at a CONSTANT WTD. And once you get yummy Lance and Sword enemies, Gilliam will already be behind in levels, and his 4 mov will not help him to catch up to his fellow warmates in levels.
Promotion-wise, Gilliam takes a while to get to 20, so it's 90% likely he'll have to compete with Forde and Kyle for the Knight Crest, or worse yet, get promoted early, which makes him even more inferior as a unit.
Now, if you really want to use Gilliam, he's going to want to catch up with his fellow warmates. Would you have him be a Great Knight, and be able to be at equal traveling distance with 80% of your units and be able to be active in battle? Or would you want him to stay behind his mates just for the sake of higher caps of which you're never going to hit?
EDIT: I only addressed Gilliam in this poll of General and Great Knight. Amelia is garbage and is not going to be fielded.
