How do you play?

I personally _almost_ always play for ranks AND plot combined with character development, although I mostly focus on the ranks. If ranks are non-existent, I aim for beating the game as fast as possible (least amount of turns) while still training a decent (or good) team.

1st time through: enjoyment, learning new stuff, story line.
2nd time: new modes, look for secrets
Then on: improve,improve, improve!

Then I playthrough and gt everyone AFAP
Then I play for more fun, and for favoritism of my favorites up to that point.

2) Turn on the GBA/DS
3) Wait until the loading screen
4) Press Start
5) Push A to load where I was
6) Push A to select action and use the arrow keys to dictate which option to use and to move character. I use B to cancel and push R to see units' statistics.
With all joking aside, I play mainly for the story, so I try to get as many support convos as possible, try to max everyone to 20/20 to see what their true potentials are (except I couldn't do that with Renault), get to all Gaiden chapters, and attempt to connect their stats and storyline to find out some things about them. For example, by bridging pieces, I can conclude that Ninian is Eliwood's true bride by the time of FE7, as the other two candidates are highly unlikely.

I tend to use babying to help level up some of the more awesome characters that are hard to kill with early on. I've been babying Wolt a little bit lately too.
Normally though, I use someone who can attack without being countered (like an Archer hitting a swordsman) and have someone who needs experience finish off the weakened unit, for least amount of damage dealt to me.
Also, depending on how things are going, I'll purposely get hit so the healers have more work to do, giving them more experience. Even healing someone when they need 1 HP still gives them as much experience as healing 20 HP. So abuse that and get healing!

2nd time through: Same as first time through but I also try to get as many people as I can to full stats (lv 20)
3rd time through: 1st time and 2nd time plus I abuse everything and try to get to all the secret chapters.

After finishing the game a couple of times, I might try some odd (like Lord only, Mage girl only) or "perfect" (recruit every character and/or get everyone to max Level) playthroughs.
Rarely do I ever touch the hard modes since they force me to... think. No, I'm serious. My strategy usually fails, although I did manage to beat FE6 (unranked, but it was still painful until Chapter 9) and FE9 (although HM there was kind of pitiful).

Afterward, random runthroughs with specific rules (all pallies, solos, etc.).

100% completion. All characters, all items (even if they've been used or broken, I need to have gone through 'em all), etc. |
This. Need I say more? I'm STILL Playing creature campaign on 8 just so I can get all characters to max out stats with the items.

I don't think I've ever done that in my entire life.
The closest game to 100% completion would probably be Melee, but I played that for 7 years.
