Warning: Mentions mature content

See here

Thoughts?

Personally I'm not a fan of the general restrictiveness and "we know what you're doing" thing in general but I personally don't mind that it's being blocked. I just hope their master plan isn't to start with stuff people might accept and get used to like this and then slowly move into taking away rights, inspiring the U.S. to do the same or something lol

just paranoia for now but eh

If anybody is looking for the Coles Notes version, it's that Cameron wants to create an opt-out program, where porn or porn story link links are basically restricted unless proof (or faking) being 18+ can be shown.

There are only two things bugging me right now:
1) Why is is opt-out, not opt-in? I think of this a lot like a "do not call" list, where you have to phone in to get your name taken off the public solicitation. It makes more sense to me for concerned parents to phone the government and asked their lines be added for such a service.
2) How are we defining "porn story line"? Who decides? Is softcore? Is erotic stories? Is anything with kissing/hugging? The addition of story lines seems a bit vague at best and Cameron probably will need to work on its wording very, very carefully if he wants to keep everyone happy.

That being said, I can appreciate his point of view.

This is all down to a group of lobbying parents who can't seem to be able to restrict their own childs internet access, and because of their own uselessness they are forcing it on the rest of the country.

I don't like it at all, it's impinging on basic freedoms, they already have plans in place to start blocking other things after the pornography things relating to drugs, to terrorism etc. How far will it go? And once they start can they be stopped?

As Kirant said, I also hate the fact that they block it on every household by default, and you have to ask them to remove it, it's essentially like a walk of shame. It should be the other way around.

But at the end of the day, what it's actually about is that David Cameron knows he's in deep trouble and that he has to make up policies to try and get votes for the next election. This isn't about making things safer online for kids, it's about making parents think something is being done so that they will vote for the conservatives.

One has to ask why we don't ask this elsewhere. I mean, I grew up in an age where you went to stores for games. In that era, you needed a guardian or a parent to sign off for the child if the child wanted an M rated game. And we really didn't see a protest.

It seems entirely silly to me that people threw their arms up in the air about this while, 5 years ago, we weren't whining that we needed to ask our parents (or our parents didn't whine that they had to take us) to get our favourite gory shooting games picked up. I can agree with the concept: that there may be merit in delaying exposure to certain arts. But it seems a bit arbitrary as to which we complain about.

That's politics as a whole. You don't act in line with your morals, but with what keeps you most in line with the average voter. If the average voter wants [x], the politician will give them [x], even if they don't like it. If they don't, the voters, if it matters to them, will FIND the party which agrees with them and put them in...so main party politicians attempt to crowd around the political centre of country they're in.

The Canadian PM, Stephen Harper, is the type of guy I imagine is against gay marriage at his core. But in light a recent back bencher attempt to re-open the debate, he shot them down and said that the topic wouldn't be opened again.

So Cameron appealing for votes is nothing new. I'm sure the next politician after him will do it too...it's rare to see a politician run on conviction (the first I can think of is Thatcher).

The problem is that this whole issue was delegated to an MP with absolutely zero knowlegde of how the internet works at all.

The hilarious thing was that her website was hacked to portray tons of extremely NSFW and pornographic images. A big **** you to her anyway haha

This is new since when?

Most bills are made by people with no concept of the field they're regulating. When they deal with oil and gas production, do you think they have experts writing out the bill for them? Not at all. They SHOULD call in experts (and in the USA they do), but when it happens, nobody honestly listens to them.

It's hardly unique. Not to say it's a good thing, but to point to this bill and claiming anything from it for the reason of the MP having little experience, you have to make an accusation to the vast majority of bills.

Oh I know, I was just saying that it was a large part of the very poor planning of this bill

While not nearly as poorly thought out as the infamous SOPA bill's software issues (which required rewriting the internet in ways unintended - xkcd actually takes a jab at this in their protest comic...check comic 1005 (1004?) on explain xkcd), there are some issues here...but none of them actually relevant on the hardware and software side.

The issue to me seems to be something that typically occurs with protective bills: definition. What exactly are defining as [x] (in this case: porn stories)?

What is the software/hardware issue that is directly concerning to the minister's/MP's inexperience?
