@Dath: Tsk Tsk Tsk. You know i'm more of a Battlespriter/Weaponeer. The mugs are early though, like when I began.
Speaking of battle sprites...
Full custom. Yes the bow looks those Fischer Price ones. It's supposed to,He's a Casual lord.
Along with a random mug using FE8 Beta chars. Guess who was used. HINT: I paint on the battlefield.
Working on a Marshall/BK for fun. Fun.

Heheh, congratulations, you have some skill alright, you ought to get a few more commenters.
Well, about your last mug... I see where you're getting at, and it is funny. Some people will look at it, and think your style is damaged, but... It is actually pretty close to the ideal, yeah. The thing is... You sprite with more than 3 shades per colors. That leather of yours has a good amount of colors, while that orange could be done with like 2 colors. >___< And the distance in between shades(And this is the bad part), really, it is pretty small. If you fixed that, and managed to use a bit less border inside of your mug, it would actually be pretty close to the ideal. :3
In spriting, less is more. If you can give a similar impression with less colors, do so. Shade it with shades which already exist, instead of shades extracted from your ref, until you master roughly the way to do them. Use three colors with at least a good share of distance in most cases if possible, 3 colors is caballistic for almost anything in the GBA rom which is not white or pretty close to it. And even then 3 colors do every now or then. The distance in between the first and the third color can easily be over 100, 150, in RGB dude.
Also, try to compact it. Use the least colors possible as always... If it is something which is not much used in a mug, consider using maybe 2, 1 color on it even. 3 is the good number, 4 being used for things which the distance of colors is too great to fool the eye, you will notice when that happens.

That being said, dude, I have a question. Why do you shade with 4 shades? 4 shades for me is something saved for when you want to go from a very light shade to a very dark one IMO(Like blonde women in general, which need to start in something almost as light as the skin and end in yellow), save cases such as hairs I don't see much use for a 4th shade. >___<'
Spriting is, among a few other things, optimizing the use of colors, since after all the sprites we received as bases only had 15 colors. For example, in an armor, usually there are only 3 shades. Darkest shade is used in anti-aliasing from the border color to the other shades(Like just a single pixel by the side of each border pixel so it doesn't clash too much), and first and second shades are then used in an intercalated form to show shape and lightsource(Out of experience, the lightest shade usually forms geometrical shapes "floating on a sea of second shade" to show the armor is not round)
So again, dude, I would kill for your linearts. But I think you have to work on studying shading, yo. Do it and you will be an FEND-level pro, seriously. I honestly think I can't draw, but I can (almost)shade, you're the opposite IMO. Improve on your shadings and surpass me, pretty much.
Anyways, can't wait to see your mudkipz. ^___^
