I find bows a lot better for them than swords considering that they tend to suck in combat anyway (and nobody really likes archers in games where there isn't a 1-2 weapon for them so might as well have a replacement with better utility.)

 

They mess with the weapons fairly frequently though. Knights in FE1 had swords for example. FE9 even gave mages the option to use knives.

they usually don't mess with the main weapon though. Falconknights in FEA had staves instead of swords, yeah, but they still had spears.

You're right on that. My friend refuses to touch Neimi in FE8 (the only game I've gotten him to try) because "Lute/Artur do it better." He also thinks all bows should have a 1-2 rating because you can fire a bow at point blank. I think he's right, honestly, but I feel like there ought to be a catch. Like lower accuracy. (Hey, after playing Skyrim with my main weapon as bows, I've pretty much learned that point blank with bows is actually REALLY HARD TO DO. Mainly because the enemy isn't just going to stand there while you aim at them lol. It's much easier to aim at them when there's a little distance between you.) I tend to use archers simply because they're there and their 2-2 attack range actually makes them decent bait for drawing enemies closer so I can finish them off with weaker units.

 

Especially Ryan in FE12. He loves his defense growths, and it's absolutely amusing to throw him into the frontlines and watch the enemy units barely scratch him. I love him to death for it. <3

The thing with having bows have 1-2 range now is that it just somehow feels weird at this point, lol. Like, then they're just kind of a "physical mage" or "a unit that can attack at close and long-range but isn't part of the weapon triangle" or whatever, and I mean, it's not like it can't work, but... >_>' I feel like I'd want to keep them at 2 range but somehow balance them in some other way--common ideas would probably be along the lines of increasing their range by default so you can snipe from even farther (RD did something like this), increasing critical, creating a skill that can counterattack but weaker at close-range, or actually making more use of special things such as ballistas or the like so that having an archer is more useful (I think Fates kiiinda tried to do this? since IIRC thieves or something use bows so it's kind of like hey, archers have 2 uses or something...)
