[6:42:57 PM] Blazer:

<<< I only say I'm above average because with the in flux of new FE fans, it feels like the average skill level has gone down a lot, lol

Blazer wanted someone to create the topic, so now I'm doing it in his absence.

So, with the new introduction of Awakening to the series and the recent influx of fans to the series, Blazer supposes the average skill level has dropped significantly since the release. I can't help but agree with him with all the hand-holding and grind based skill system, and even worse, the introduction of Casual Mode. Casual Mode in essence encourages more reckless strategy because you know there are no permanent death consequences within the game. With True Fire Emblem Classic Mode, you have the aspect of permanent death within the series, and you must play more safely or think about your actions. Casual Mode gives enough of a crutch to new players that it gets them into the series, but it's hard to leave the crutch behind.

So, I turn to ask you guys. What level of skill do you tier yourself within? Are you a scrub Casual Mode Player or a Classic Mode Player? Which Fire Emblem games have you beaten, and on which difficulties?

I'll wait until there are more responses to post mine.

I don't play FE anymore, but when I did, I usually just spammed Sword master, hoped for the best. I would say I was completely terrible, but I put a lot of effort into FE 4.

Hmm I would say that I'm a bit above average, maybe average actually. I rarely go in and plan moves ahead, mostly I just plan for the specific turn and then react to what happens next. I think if I tried to play Lunatic for Example I would have a really hard time.

...Come to think of it, I've only completed three runs of FE: FE8 Normal and FE13 Normal/Hard. I grinded a lot on the normal runs for funsies, and I didn't grind whatsoever on the Hard one but had a few difficulties regardless because it was for a draft challenge. I didn't have nearly enough early units, haha. I ought to finally play FE7/9 or something so I can properly answer this.

I was unable to clear Awakening's first few Lunatic chapters without video assistance.

I only reached up to that one part where...you uh...kill some...mage guy...with some ally on your team being a student of a mentor and the other mage guy being another student...and Wind tomes were involved, in Maniac mode in FE12.

I cleared Hector Hard Mode without many issues.

I cleared FE6 normal mode Sacae route (I NEVER took the other route now that I look back at it) several times and can't remember if I even touched hard mode in that game.

I cleared Radiant Dawn hard mode at some point but it was by no means a smooth journey.

I can play either on Casual or on Classic. I refuse to play Classic in cases where you are severely underpowered relative to the enemy(this generally means how much the early chapters screw you over), and even Casual in cases where it's just complete BS. Sometimes I will let units die. Sometimes I will kill units I could have recruited if I just don't happen to think I'll use them anyway. The only units I keep alive are the ones I want to use. I recruited Klein in FE6 several times but always killed Tate and Gonzales.

The average skill level will decrease no matter what. Even if Awakening wasn't hand-holding and so on, the sheer number of new people that got into it would have added a significant number of less skilled players.

Like Snow, I absolutely never plan moves ahead. I just ensure that I will have high chances of survival during the enemy phase (this is part of why I actually use units like Generals) which is good enough on anything where I don't have to deal with a particularly low turn limit or deal with a running thief or something.

Heh, okay. I think this is enough replies to add mine now. Ready for incoming elitism?

Anyway, I've beaten FE1, FE2, FE3, FE4, FE5 (hardest normal mode EVER), FE6 Normal and Hard (Gonzales actually breaks the game on Lalum's route), FE7 Lyn Normal, Eliwood Normal, Hector Normal, and Hector Hard Mode, FE8 on Normal and Hard, FE9 Normal and Hard, FE10 Normal and Hard, FE11 Normal, and all Hard Modes up to H3 (I could never complete the game that many times), FE12 Normal, H3, H5, and Maniac Reverse. For FE13, I've beaten Hard Classic with no grind, two runs of Lunatic, one with grind as a joke, and the other without, both on Classic. And I've completed Lunatic+ Classic once, and I'm currently on Chapter 16 on my no grind Lunatic+ run. I've beaten both modes on Apotheosis on my grinded Lunatic run. Jesus I play this game too much.

I would definitely consider myself at above average skill level. Unlike most of the posts here, from what I've seen, I play coming in with a specific strategy in mind and also reacting to enemy behavior. It's what made FE10 Hard Mode bearable, I had to plan my strategy beforehand so I could react appropriately to not being able to see enemy attack ranges.

Gonna say I'm pretty average. I don't plan ahead, I don't really try to pick units based on stats, and most of all I had to use casual mode for awakening's lunatic mode. I do try to recruit all of the characters though, and when I'm playing a classic mode or any fire emblem before awakening I restart chapters when a character dies.

Edit: I've beaten 4-8 at least twice each other than thracia 776 which I haven't beaten yet. Sacred stones I've beaten on hard mode(heh, hard mode), and the rest on normal. Radiant dawn on normal, and awakening on hard and lunatic(casual mode for lunatic)

Also. Just so you guys know.

There are people that struggle with Normal mode of Awakening.

How this ever happens is COMPLETELY beyond me, but yeah.

Also. Just so you guys know.

How this ever happens is COMPLETELY beyond me, but yeah.

you are too high up to understand the feelings of people who aren't as good at FE as you

---------

random replies aside (I did skim the posts but I'm lazy and don't feel like responding to almost everything like I sometimes do)

I said above average but maybe I'm sliiightly better? like if we're going tiers, maybe I'm high B tier? S-tier being max? haha

I did beat Lunatic Classic with minimal grinding, so that's something... it was definitely one of the more challenging FE experiences at the beginning, and even beyond that, at times. Unfortunately I can't take GBA games seriously as I can cheat on them, and same for FE10 (that game stinks--err, well, rather, I didn't really enjoy the gameplay much, so I put on cheat codes and I don't think I could play it without it now). So it's hard to say how good I am at them without cheating or savestating. But trying to think back and in terms of how I play, I can probably handle most hard modes of anything FE6 or after with enough effort, and I do spend some time managing inventory, starting positions, and trying to plan things out, but I almost never do extensive research into my characters, efficiency, etc.--I pretty much plop my units on and only think a few turns ahead, or in terms of general ideas ("my thief needs to go here and I need to take out X and Y to get there", "I will have my cavaliers go here, this person to that village, and defend my healer with some unit I don't really care for if it comes down to it", stuff like that, as opposed to being overly tactical and trying to get a low-turn count).

I think I have a pretty good mastery over the fundamentals, so I can do things like rescue-games, trading items to manipulate equipped items, baiting the AI, etc., but nothing overly complex, exciting, or efficient.

Yeah I guess that about sums it up... but apparently if Normal and Hard on Awakening were found hard for some people, then I've probably gone from "pretty much anyone can do what I do in an FE game" to "apparently I actually have some skills that quite a few people don't", which is why I said I'm about "above average". I mean, a C is generally considered average (at least where I'm from), and I said B, so yeah, sounds about right =P

Ah, if we're talking strategy, I generally play it slow with an advancing wall formation and multiple mages/archers. I value healers quite highly, and often field two, numbers permitting. That said, I run a few glass cannons as well, for finishing off high priority threats before they can wreck my lines and just because I like them. As time passes and my glass cannons become dodgetanks, I shift my style to more of a glorious onslaught where everyone runs up and kills everything in sight. I imagine that all of that is fairly common, though.

Also, since a few others brought up Classic/Casual, I only ever play Classic. It's not so much an elitism thing as it is me not feeling satisfied with a lack of perma-death, even when that results in multiple restarts because the enemies are being unfair bastards. Okay, maybe it's an elitism thing.

Hmm, Awakening HM blind was a joke for me, and I absolutely loved FE5 blind* (*checked for things like warp tiles because they're dumb) so I suppose I'm pretty solid. On the other hand, I basically never play the highest difficulties because, well, they're pretty boring, IMO. In turn, I'm actually not awesome at dealing with super buffed enemies, which is pretty set as the way FE's going to do "dificulty" so...

Yeah, FE13 HM doesn't seem hard (I'm guessing Lunatic is pretty much the real "hard mode" of the game by uh, more experienced players' standards), and buffed enemies is definitely the way a lot of games go for harder difficulties since it's easier, but it's kind of a shallow way to increase difficulty and I feel like a lot of the times it just comes down to patience (or having a good enough strategy or whatever that the increase in stats really matter). I do like when harder difficulties (for RPGs and even games in general) actually introduce new elements or more intelligent/complex AI, maybe with better skills or something too (uh, as far as FE goes, Lunatic+ skills don't really count to me, I'm thinking something more personalized and well thought-out, lol).

This is how I normally go if I'm playing casually. If I'm going hard in the paint I plan out moves, follow a general strategy and react in accordance (pretty much the only way I play FE10 now).

Recently, I've been trying to be more efficient in my play style so I try to keep stuff like turtling to a minimum. Being generous with my skill level I would say I'm above average (I've beaten all the modes in FE6 beyond barring Lunatic Reverse in FE12), but stuff like Lunatic in FE12 (I'm so shit with reclass) and Luna+ (caved in and looked up reliable strats since the reset game was too stronk) give me a lot of trouble. Being brutally honest, I would put myself between above average and average. I'm nowhere near as good as people who can break the game their first playthrough and make LTCs, I have too much trouble in the highest difficulties to call myself above average, but I handle myself well enough to not be average.

I mean, I get why it happens. It's hard to have strategic depth that challenges players like FE5 does while also having the game be accessible. But as it is, FE5 is by far my favorite as far as gameplay goes, though it of course has its problems, and if anything enemies are the easiest part of the game, not the hardest, and I do miss that. I think there's a problem with this whole "one size fits all" design. It means less fun for more people, instead of more fun for fewer people. Which, I mean, is a fair trade, and makes sense market-wise, but I am generally a depth over breadth and quality over quantity kind of guy.

Yeah I totally understand and agree that in trying to encompass more people they have to sacrifice some things and while it is a fair trade, since we're the people who kind of enjoyed it when it catered to fewer people, we can't help but feel like it was a little cooler that way, since it was more focused and stuff... or something... yeah that didn't really make sense haha

but whatever, congrats on your 1700th post! kind of weird thinking it's been almost 7 years now XD

This is why JRPGs have things like post-game. In theory. (Most of the time this does just involve jacked up stats.) To some level I can understand why people complain about My Castle and it's related features, in that all the investment toward that could have been spent on something like a particularly strategic post-game, but going by conventions I don't think that would occur anyway I guess.

On that note I really like post-game situations overall, I usually spend more time doing them than I do the main story, and in the case of Fire Emblem it would make those later units have more time to shine (imagine being able to actually care about the ability to use Lehran in FE10.)

Well I've beaten FE7,8,9,10,11, and 13 on all of the difficulties. (Never was able to finish 12 because it got stolen.)

FE Awakening was probably the hardest because I would purposely screw myself over just to see if I could get out of the situation.

I don't know how we're judging this, so put me in whatever tier you want.

My usual strategy is...Well I don't really have a strategy I apply to every single game. Lol I kinda just adapted to whatever situation I ended up in.

Though when I first started playing FE8, I was HORRIBLE. Like, I somehow managed to run out of useable weapons on most of my units. I ended up having to finish the game with Iron weapons that you get from random Valni drops. Lol

Like most people in this thread, I would classify myself as above average. I've played FE8 and FE7 countless times. I beat both on the hardest difficulties (Ephraim hard mode and Hector Hard mode). I played FE 6 several times and beat it on hard mode as well. And even though it's one of my favorite games in general, I've only beat FE4 once.

One of my friends got into Fire emblem through Awakening. I was ashamed to find out he played in Casual Mode. Compared to these new Fire Emblem fans I feel like a pro, but when I see DD151's videos I feel like a novice...

Well I don't have a good skill level at Fire Emblem.

I only completed FE7 and FE8 both in normal mode (but not the Hector mode in FE7)

But for resume my skill level.... hem... I like to take my time for a chapter, and I retry when I lose someone x)
