Edit: breakfast is out of the question since English speaking countries typically have a light breakfast.

Technically the evening meal is known as dinner. Supper is what refers to the largest meal of the day whether that be lunch or dinner..
This is the inverse answer.
Dinner is the largest/most significant meal of the day.
Supper is the description of the evening meal. My trips to China often included supper as a bowl of congee at 9-10 PM whereas dinner was a massive family gathering mid-late afternoon would be qualified as dinner.
Example of a source (many back this definition up): http://blog.dictiona...pper-vs-dinner/
Edit - Ugh...I just had a brain fart moment reading this. I spent a minute trying to ensure that "supper" was the word I meant because my brain felt it didn't look like a word for some reason.

The rural folks in GA tend to call lunch "dinner" and dinner "supper." It causes a bit of confusion to someone like me who has always called them "lunch" and "dinner" respectively.
