Posted 31 October 2016 - 10:53 PM

So last week (would have posted this earlier but forums weren't working for me for a while) some of us had a chat over on the Discord server that involved beverages (alongside other stuff) in which our preferences and aversions didn't really align. I'd say there's no surprise to be had there, but when it comes to everyday eating I'm more or less clueless about what everybody (except like two people) else does, especially for non-East Asians, effectively finding it inconceivable even that anyone out there can survive without at least three bowls of rice a week. This is especially inconvenient for me when I try to think about what fictional characters that weren't designed by someone else would be eating, because it'd be weird if everybody just ate the way I did.

I'm assuming most people out there have a comfort zone of sorts for what they will usually fall back on for their regular meals since eating out all the time isn't really financially appealing so this shouldn't end up being too much of a hassle to answer.

Breakfast

I always eat a bowl of assorted fruits(I'm cool with consuming the vast majority of commonly sold fruit on the market) and a smoothie made from even more assorted fruits ever since Arim told me that stuff is good for getting my morning energy going. (Had to find some alternative to the blegh that is coffee.) Sometimes I'll have a scoop of ice cream to go with it too, or definitively so when it's summer and the AC doesn't feel like doing its job. Incidentally, I've never understood why other kids allegedly got hyper from sugar overload, because it's never worked that way for me.

Dinner

Adding onto the blatant disregard for healthy habits (still not anywhere near being fat though, diets are overrated), I will often eat chicken karaage or shrimp tempura alongside a bowl of white rice and miso soup. For vegetable side dishes I'll eat roasted seaweed and sliced carrots, tomatoes, or takuan, or mix carrots, lettuce, and tomato together and pour some red wine vinegar over it for a salad. Omurice is also a thing that I make often, but instead of peas and onions I use carrots and garlic instead, and instead of ketchup I stir-fry hot sauce into the rice cause I'm weird like that. Same goes for Oyakodon, usual vegetables are ditched for replacements I already have. I selectively only bothered to mostly learn how to cook things that don't have to use what I don't see myself regularly buying and it's all been smooth sailing for me so far. Occasionally I'll bake some shishamo too since it doesn't have any cartilage to remove unlike most fish out there.

Whenever I don't feel like eating rice I'll cook pasta (with clam chowder or chicken noodle soup from the can as a side to counter the sourness along with the aforementioned salad) instead using pre-made sauces and more chicken (making Italians everywhere in Europe cringe) alongside large tomato slices because the way restaurants dice them up into being so small it just falls off the fork pissed me off. I'll usually add 1/3 of a cup of lemon juice to Alfredo sauce and...I'm guessing 1/8th of a cup of red wine to Marinara sauce along with some red wine vinegar since as mentioned before I avoid consuming more alcohol than they would give a child during the Eucharist. (Same ratio goes for Mirin used in cooking Japanese dishes. Even when used in cooking, some of the alcohol tends to stay there because the food is done before the amount of time it takes to entirely cook it away.)

For drinks I'll typically have korean pear juice, peach juice, orange juice, grapefruit juice, pineapple juice, Sanpellegrino sparkling pomegranate juice, and/or non-alcoholic apple cider in stock. If for whatever reason I've somehow run out of conventional beverages I'll drink diluted red wine vinegar. Plain water is never consumed, ever. It enters my mouth only to wash it from toothpaste, substances I've inhaled that I want off of my tongue, and so much acid it'd kill Blue Leafeon. When I get really lazy though I'll just do something like eat leftover baked chicken with salt and rice or toss some tomatoes and red wine vinegar into leftover pasta noodles and call it a day. If for whatever reason I haven't already eaten all the eggs from making Omurice and Oyakodon already I'll usually just scramble them and toss some diced tomatoes in there to eat the rest. I used to eat cup ramen too but after I got a taste of good quality restaurant ramen I can't go back to eating that...

I don't really eat desserts all that often (probably buy them like once every three months or less unless it's ice cream for summer) but my choices there are vanilla ice cream, castella, and strudels. I don't know why but unfortunately fruit tarts are not often sold at the supermarket where I live.

I've only just realized how little variety actually ends up on my plate when I don't order anything to-go after having it written out...

I don't really have any big preferences about food Tbh. I try to change it up a lot. My breakfast often involves eggs though since we have like 20 chickens. Cereal is pretty good too. For dinner though i usually end up cooking for my family since I enjoy doing it(and I'm not too shabby after 8 years of cooking at least 5 times a week =p also I was recently informed that it might be seen as unusual for an 11y/o to cook for his family on a regular basis, so I wanted to ask about that). I guess I have a preference towards certain ingredients though. Chicken for example is just so easy to work with. Potatoes can pretty easily be paired with other ingredients too. Of course rice is one of my favorite things to cook with though. Literally an endless amount of possibilities there. Not to mention rice is pretty great just by itself.

It's a lot easier for me to say what I don't like eating really. Can't stand mushrooms or black olives. Won't eat them at all. Jalapeños are pretty gross(I've got nothing against spicy foods, just don't like jalapeños. Habaneros though: Beautiful), and I don't like tomatoes so much when they're just sliced up. Gotta be changed into something else. Salsa is fine, ketchup is fine, tomato based pasta sauces are awesome, just tomatoes though I'm not ok with. Not a big fan of Lima beans or brussel sprouts either. The only other thing I can think of that I really don't like is miso soup. Idk why, but I found it absolutely revolting on both occasions I had it.

I am a terrible eater.

The only green vegetables I can stand are fried okra (not healthy) and green beans. I refuse to touch wheat bread (mom had Crohn's, she couldn't eat anything but white.) I prefer white meat chicken and turkey, and I prefer ground beef that as lean as possible. I hate anything that is slimy, especially fat found in meat, and actually won't eat the meat at all if it's mostly fat. I also won't touch any type of steak/hamburger/etc if there's even the slightest amount of pink in it. (Mom had to have everything well-done. See above note on wheat.)

The majority of my diet is, in some form or fashion, sweet. Sweet corn and sweet potatoes are two of my favorite vegetables. I like pecans and Brazil nuts because they have a very faint trace of sweet to them. Honey-roasted peanut butter is awesome.

I like fruits, but I'm allergic. So meh.

However, in recent months, it has come to my attention exactly how badly I've been eating, and how little nutrition I must have been getting because of it. I've been cutting down on the sugar and carbs, and recently went to half-caff on my coffee. I've been trying to fit more green vegetables (and other vegetables in general) into my diet. Been eating more nuts, too, but those are expensive. <<

Wait, if a meat is mostly fat, wouldn't that more or less just make it lard?

I've never understood why nuts are so expensive (for what they are) either.

Funny you consider this unhealthy though, considering I asked someone on Skype this same question...

[11/1/2016 3:49:19 AM] Reav: if a normal person ate how i ate, they'd be long dead
[11/1/2016 3:49:43 AM] Reav: cept here i am, perfectly healthy, perfectly skinny and extremely easy to build muscle mass
[11/1/2016 3:50:03 AM] Reav: when all i eat are bagels, microwave food, instant noodles, and eating out all the time
[11/1/2016 3:50:12 AM] Reav: and chicken. a lot of chicken
[11/1/2016 3:50:39 AM] Reav: if i were to guess, i built a high metabolism from the amount of carbs i eat (hence bagels and all sorts of breads)
[11/1/2016 3:51:22 AM] Reav: and as almost strictly carnivore, i eat A LOT of meats, which on top of just genetics is how i can build muscle so much easier than your typical person
[11/1/2016 3:51:59 AM] Reav: for example, ive never worked out, most ive worked out is work in a grocery store... and im still stronger than someone who goes to the gym a few times every week, and also works at the same store
[11/1/2016 3:52:37 AM] Reav: who of course is relatively the same height and build... so no im not beating any 200+ pounders anytime soon with my 140 pound frame lol
[11/1/2016 3:53:45 AM] Reav: my natural blood pressure is REALLY high, so ive never gotten headaches, brain freezes, or lightheaded
[11/1/2016 3:54:00 AM] Reav: never been knocked out by a punch, ive always stayed conscious
[11/1/2016 3:54:29 AM] Reav: in general... ive never knocked out unconscious,... whether it be drinking, or physical trauma, or whatever
[11/1/2016 3:55:43 AM] Reav: i eat a lot of sugar if that makes any difference... i drink my tea and all that with like double how much typical people put for sugar and cream.. and i have 0-.1 fruits or veggies on average in a day
[11/1/2016 3:56:25 AM] Reav: i wanna say that's probably why im good at shooters, from those heightened reflexes

Funny you consider this unhealthy though, considering I asked someone on Skype this same question...

My sunday school class has a few health nuts. "Sugar is super bad for you and it's addicting." "You need to cold turkey the caffeine." "Stay away from sodas, period." "You eat HOW MANY vegetables a day? That's not good! Are you at least taking vitamins to make up for the lack of nutrition?"

Admittedly, I do have to admit that my eating habits are catching up with me. Some people have super high metabolism and can eat whatever the heck they want. I have never been one of those people... Not to mention that I've been having a rather fast pulse for a while, and it has to be either the sugar or the caffeine doing it. The doctors say there's nothing wrong with my heart. It's just beating fast.

I also haven't had the nerve to tell them that vitamins are completely unreliable because the FDA does not regulate the vitamin industry, and they can literally hand you sugar pills that have no nutritional value whatsoever.

Also, wow, that person has a worse diet than me. XD

Before you listen to those health nuts (although what's been mentioned doesn't really seem all that out there), a few red flags to watch out for before you take them seriously:

  1. "FRUIT JUICE IS NO BETTER THAN SUGAR WATER!": Not relevant to your diet in particular obviously, but they'd probably still say this if you straight up juiced the fruits yourself.
  2. "Preservatives? Oh no, get away! That stuff is from the devil!": Some people out there seem to more or less believe that preservatives have no function whatsoever other than harming your body. They probably don't think too much about the rest of what they've been told about staying healthy either. The stress of thinking about how evil preservatives are probably makes them more sick than the preservatives themselves.
  3. "EAT ALL THE VEGETABLES!!": Apparently vegetables are the only thing possibly worth letting in your body to some people. I think they're secretly herbivores in human disguise.
  4. "WATER. WATER MASTER RACE. YOU ARE 95% WATER. BECOME WATER.": On a more serious note, if someone tells you that you should be drinking water all the time, especially taking you actually becoming thirsty to be a bad sign (since by the time you are thirsty your body is telling you you're dehydrated) they'll probably die of water intoxication before you.
  5. Obese people: Once back when I was still socially awkward (read: when I wasn't concerned with feeding everybody else what they wanted to see out of me) the following slipped my mouth: "How come the ones that keep criticizing your diet are the ones that are still fat?"
  6. The ones that are actually concerned with getting enough superfoods and other health-marketed things into their body:

Honestly when it comes to being healthy "all things in moderation" is probably the best way to go. Removing carbs and sugar entirely is not a good idea, especially not all at one time. Dropping caffeine cold turkey is also probably not the best idea, especially if you take in a lot. It's highly addictive, and even ignoring chemical addiction it's also to build a dependency(brain-wise rather than chemicals)

Before you listen to those health nuts (although what's been mentioned doesn't really seem all that out there), a few red flags to watch out for before you take them seriously:

1: The only people who should actually avoid juice are the ones who have super bad sugar problems. (Aka diabetics) While it is true that some juices out there aren't as much juice as they are other crap, the ones who make these kinds of commends are clearly dumb/naive.

2: Haven't met any of these people, thankfully.

3: My current doctor-assigned diet is specifically 1,200 calories; two 500 calorie meals, two 100 calorie snacks, no white bread/noodles/rice, but "vegetables are free." Needless to say, I'm not uh...actually sticking to this one. <<;

4: I am constantly being told that I need to drop sodas entirely. I don't drink sodas on a daily basis; usually, just when I eat out. (I only drink water from very specific sources) Meanwhile my grandma is 76 years old and drinks NOTHING but sodas, and I don't see any of these things they say will happen to me if I drank soda. :D

5: Nope. Only person who is relatively fat is diabetic, so she has an excuse. However, the person who is the biggest health nut in my sunday school has a busload of food allergies, which probably contributes to her obsession over what she eats.

6: Oh gosh, those people... I'm friends with a girl who recently started working for some stupid distributor called "It Works!" Just the name of the company ITSELF sends up a red flag--forget the products it sells. If you really want a laugh, google "it works greens" or the "it works body wrap." It is beyond my comprehension that they believe this crap works.

Yeah... Heck, even diabetics need sugar.

Yeeeah... Really not a good idea to just drop the caffeine cold turkey. Headaches will occur.
