Ok, So I am starting a Hack of Fire Emblem 8, and I need some advice.
First: What should I start with? The hack will include new portraits, a new script, new items/weapons, new sprites, new support conversations, new class trees etc. I am not doing this by myself, but its still overwhelming. so where would you recommend starting?
Second: Would it be possible to have 60 main game characters? and the additional 10 in the endgame? I guess what I'm asking is : is there enough space for that many, and is it possible to change the recruitment of the game, so that you are adding recruitment, not just replacing them.
Third: Is The actual editing, and hacking of the script something a person with no previous experience can feasibly learn?
Thanks for your time and consideration, and Forgive me if any of these questions have been answered elsewhere... I'm new here and haven't gotten a chance to explore the whole forum.

This is the story of the end,
the end of the story.
And yet, as profound a story as this is,
it wont end, not entirely.
For the greatest questions in life, will never be answered,
but nor will the pursuit of the answers end.
the end of the story.

I would start with learning nightmare editing, as it is essential for all other hacking. you can download the nightmare program and it's modules from this site here Then make sure you have a common knowledge for hex editing. use FEditor to hack text, mappy to hack maps, and nintenlords event assembler for for event hacking.
also 60 characters... sounds like a lot, I have no idea how you would go about doing that, 60 it quite a lot, I would say let someone more professional answer this...
and yes you can learn all of this if you have the patience.
also if you watch arch's youtube videos for event hacking you should be able to learn map hacking and event hacking more easily then if you tried to by yourself, here's episode 1. also I know the example uses FE7, don't worry about that it will work for FE8 as well, and in episode 15 he explains the differences between editing FE7 and FE8 http://www.youtube.c...n_order&list=UL
good luck!

You can only have a max of 50 characters per allegiance on the field at once, including the merchant IIRC. I don't know what the limit to battle preparations are, but that's for fielded units, and it might be the same for total units in your army.

None of us who hack events were born with any experience hacking things, but we did it, so yeah, it's possible. It takes some hard work and a lot of patience (I mean a lot), but it's totally worth it if you get it, and with nice tutorials and videos and people to help you, it's totally feasible.
Signature thanks to Shu.

Ok, Thanks for your input, I have Nightmare, and all the necessary modules. Is there a tutorial for using it? if there are multiple which would you all recommend?
Also, Do you recommend compiling all the sprite sheets/portraits/script etc then inserting them, or inserting as you finish them?

I myself create ones I need for the chapter I am hacking. This way I don't get too far ahead of myself.

Hello everyone, it's been a loooong time since I posted last...
Anyway, I'm also attempting a FE8 hack with a large scale. I've read up and played around with the big 4 (Nightmare, FEEditorAdv, Mappy, Event Assembler [only read info for this one]), but there are a few things I want to be clear on before I go too crazy:
1. Increased stat/Level caps? I heard having stats over 31 can cause issues and is only possible with ASM. Is this possible in any way without it?
2. 3rd tier promotions? I was thinking that editing a promotion item in Nightmare to allow promotions to unused classes would work, is that true?
3. Added characters/classes? Sure, editing the existing classes can allow for custom characters, but what about actually entering in new information for new classes? I was reading up on a table expansion process that would allow for more character and item slots, but would that apply to classes as well?
I know I'm asking a lot, I appreciate any advice you give me. I just want to know what I can do without ASM, specifically those three things above.
