QUOTE (kirant @ Jun 30 2014, 09:30 PM)
I get that it's a low scoring affair but nursing a lead for 45 is a terrible idea...one wrong bounce (like right to Sneijder) and you're borked.  Mexico just proved it isn't a great idea to let the other team have full run of their half and basically play your end most of the time.  You sit back on your heels and wait for them in a defensive shell with such a fragile lead and you're just asking them to get good opportunities.  Two goal leads I could understand in soccer since goals are harder to come by.  But one goal leads are just playing odds.

I guess I ask because I see teams doing this all the time in hockey.  One goal and two goal leads can easily become problems when the team down get to stay on the attacking end of the ice.  One goal and momentum shifts.  Teams often lose by trying to nurse a one or two goal lead too quickly.  You really have to push until you have a three goal lead.  Similarly, I think it's a mistake to not keep pushing hard for goals until you have a two goal lead.  Then you might be able to get away with a dumping, defensive game.

It was a bad move, but Netherlands literally offered nothing going forward at the time, and to be honest, for the game. I can see why they made it. If they'd played keep-ball when they got it, instead of chasing, it might've been better. Gio going off was the dumbest move.

That's the same argument I hear in hockey and it really comes back to burn teams quite often. Letting up on a team that seems weak is an easy way for a bad case of ball luck (in this case) to strike at the most inopportune times. I can kind of understand the logic too but it just isn't a smart strategy is my opinion. A defensive shell doesn't make sense to me unless the lead is 2+ (soccer) or 3+ (hockey).

Wow, it's almost been a year since I posted in this topic? Christ that's far too long.

I'll just post in keywords haha

Terry, new contract, good for him.

Arsenal to finish second, you heard it here first.

Barca 2-1 Real, great game, feel bad for Bale who seems to be taking all the flak despite being a great player.

De Bruyne playing out of his mind at Wolfsburg, what a player!

Chicharito scoring the winner in a Derby, and falling over in the process. Classic Little Pea.

The most dangerous thing in the world is facing an Italian team that only needs a draw. GG Monaco.

Aston Villa - Arsenal final. Come on Arsenal, retain that trophy.

Arsenal - Chelsea this Sunday, pretty much meaningless I feel at this stage, unless all of Chelseas team dies to locusts and somehow Man Utd win the league...

The forum wasn't the same without the topic that literally only you two posted in wasn't at the top of the sport's section.
