So thanks to the 25th Anniversary Fire Emblem book or whatever, we've gotten some neat illustrations and other information lately.

Thanks to Kantopia, the latest is on this somewhat unique Fire Emblem game that was in development for the Wii *AFTER* Radiant Dawn, but never got finished.

Unreleased Wii Fire Emblem Game Design Document Translations — https://kantopia.wor...th-anniversary/

There's also an interview that also has some interesting tidbits — https://kantopia.wor...th-anniversary/

Makes me think that we really won't be getting a traditional FE game on consoles for a while. I'm not totally opposed to this as the game is still fun on handhelds, but I'd still kinda like one eventually anyway--7 of the games have been on consoles and it's not like they were all bad so I could totally see us having an HD Fire Emblem game be awesome, but it's precisely because they probably couldn't cut corners if they wanted it to be good that it would end up being too expensive/risky of an investment for them

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this mysterious game? Do you think you'd be interested? I know I would, even if it's different. The Pikmin comparison or whatever was also kinda interesting, though I can't quite imagine it, which I guess is all the more reason it'd have been cool to play it, haha.

I was skimming the details with half-interest when I saw this part:

"The player could easily explore, hold conversations or fight enemies in this part"

Then I was like WHOAAAA hold up! EXPLORING?! DO TELL ME MORE. (I do enjoy exploring more frequently in games than I do any other aspect, it seems.)

Alas, not much is said other than that. It definitely looks like it would have been an interesting concept...but would have probably functioned more as a spin-off than anything else. Not to mention that if the series had actually gone this direction, a lot of the older, die-hard FE fans would have been raving mad.

it's precisely because they probably couldn't cut corners if they wanted it to be good that it would end up being too expensive/risky of an investment for them

This is a sad truth with a LOT of games these days, I've noticed. Many of the smaller, lesser-known companies are now forced to stick to mobile and/or handhelds simply because console games these days take FAR too much money to produce. (I blame you, kids who complain about graphics not being realistic enough! Cartoony graphics can be just as pretty as HD!)

I would have definitely bought this one, I believe. Maybe they'll revive it at a later date? </wishful thinking>

Yeah the exploring thing didn't strike me as very "Fire Emblem-like" which I guess is part of why the whole deal piqued my curiosity. I'm not against new things so long as they're good, haha.

Spin-off sounds about right. I don't mind spin-offs so long as they're like... treated as such, I guess. Like FE14 to me feels closer to a spin-off than an actual Fire Emblem game, just like how Persona is kind of a spin-off of SMT (though it originally carried the "SMT" title in it). And hey, I'm one of those older, die-hard FE fans! but I'd like to think I wouldn't be in the "a lot" so long as it was either clearly distinguished as a "spin-off" and not a main series game, or was done so well I didn't mind. I mean, I do like some of the new things being done in the new FEs even though it's very different, so I'm not going to deny them any merit just because I miss the simpler GBA-styled FE games, lol.

Aye, I gotcha. A lot of Japanese companies build games that are both on like PS3/PS4 and the Vita, meaning the Vita is kind of the "lower-end" and in a way this helps justify the poorer graphics on the console version because well, they're also making a Vita version, and for a Vita game the graphics look ok, lol. Of course there is the mobile fad too and for real great-looking games you have to put a lot into it, which is why you don't see Nintendo doing a lot of big HD Wii U games, they're generally things that aren't too heavy on the budget or the graphics (though Xenoblade X and Zelda U are more on that expensive AAA side, which is why I think the former took so long and the latter is taking so long). And for companies that DO try to make console-exclusive games they might just not reach that level of graphical fidelity and have to deal with the consequences of that because people will judge a game on its graphics to some extent, some way more than others, haha.

I think so too, but hey, I'm pretty much the exception. Even when I'm not too interested in something FE, I still buy it, partially out of this weird sense of obligation that I've built for myself as the owner of a long-time FE site, haha. It's like "I've been an FE fan since I was in 4th grade, I can't let this new FE game pass me up"

though I did let FE11 pass me up for a while lol, didn't buy that until recently. but that's because it's Shadow Dragon. only a small fraction of FE fans are able to really enjoy that game. I wasn't one of them.

I totally agree, there. I don't mind new things, either... So long as they're good and we're not talking about a remake, that is. (I can rant and rave all day about all the unnecessary additions they made to HG/SS)

I guess they did kind of reuse the "Field" idea in FE Fates, though? The 'My Castle' sounds rather...un-FE-like. At least, from what I read on serenes, it does. I actually haven't seen the game beyond trailers and what little information I garnered from serenes... (And my friend who was interested in the game but kept complaining about how tragic it was)

I bought Shadow Dragon, but I did not enjoy it. Not until I used an AR code to give my units a little boost here and there. Even then, though, the game could be murderous at times. The desert chapter with Gharnef. UUUUUUUUGH.

I didn't buy Radiant Dawn, and still don't own it to this day. I kind of regret it now, somewhat, but at the same time...I don't. lol

Yeah the "My Castle" deal definitely isn't very "FE-like", it doesn't have any real exploration feel to me though/seems a bit different, so idk. It feels more like fluff rather than a useful addition to the game. *shrugs*

Haha, yeah SD was... eh. Not terrible as a simple FE game, but lacked the charm that made me like the series, I think. Haha.

And RD wasn't bad but eh. Maybe you'll get to play it one day, who knows. xP

Definitely sounds like "fluff." And yeah, exploration isn't a thing. But honestly, I'd be shocked to have exploration be a thing in FE.

SD was decent considering it was a remake of the first FE game ever. As you said, it lacks some of the charm later games have (Supports being one, where you get insight into the unit as a character) but eh. My main beef with it was how...it really wanted you to let your characters die just to see bonus content. And the difficulty.

I'm hoping it might get a Wii u port. Doubt it, but since the two GBA games are on there... MAYBE!

On topic: I wonder how long they actually worked on this project before they quit. Was this information literally all they had made at the time, I wonder?

I'm thinking that they didn't really have an actual release in mind; it was more of an experimental thing to figure out the direction to take the series in during the DS/Wii generation. IIRC Radiant Dawn didn't do so well in sales and had a fair amount of negative reception, to the point where Nintendo said "no more Fire Emblem for home consoles". I guess this can explain why the DS remakes were made: IS wanted to streamline the gameplay to widen the series' appeal, since Radiant Dawn was more difficult and complex than the previous games in the series.

haha word

I just felt SD was so bland/dark in terms of story, characters, graphics, animations, etc. that I couldn't get into it. in terms of raw gameplay it probably wasn't that bad lol, but usually that alone isn't enough to carry a game (usually). it needs to have some charm, at least.

and a Wii U port isn't impossible, I think Europe got one? not sure/can't remember but eh

and I doubt this is ALL they had, but it's probably the most significant/interesting bits that they were comfortable with sharing. the fact that they had something they were working on (like programming-wise, we saw some kind of screenshot of their prototype or w/e) means they probably had some solid progress but scrapped it maybe a few to several months in. definitely seems like they didn't get too far though

oooh that's a very good point, yeah maybe it was just an experimental thing so that's why they didn't really go through with it or anything. and that kinda makes sense, SD was simple, a remake of a classic game, and portable, plus it had the touch controls I guess... hm... good points indeed, Neph

SD as dark? It's been ages since I've played the game; I don't remember.

Oh, right, it is dark because it wants you to KILL EVERYONE! For gaiden chapters!

My biggest beef with the game was the lack of--wait, who am I kidding? My biggest beef with the game is the desert chapter. All my hate. The NEXT biggest beef was the lack of supports--or generally ANYTHING that could give you more insight on the characters. (FE12 fixed this by having base conversations, even if they truly aren't 'supports', they still give the characters more substance.)

Very possible. Especially since it said that they stopped because it "had no direction." As interesting as this is, I really don't feel like it would have been a fire emblem game. At least, it would not have felt like one.

All this discussion about how the console games failed makes me feel guilty for not getting FE10.

Cool stuff all around! The world certainly looks beautiful enough, and the Fire Emblem series name is enough for me to want to buy a game, even if it looks like it'd definitely stray from the traditional FE gameplay. Hearing about unreleased stuff like this is always really interesting!

by dark I didn't mean like, story-wise, I meant like... the colors and graphics and presentation and like--it came off as really dull (this would be a better word) instead of the more vibrant and luscious colors of previous games. which you could argue made sense to some extent but for me it just wasn't enjoyable to look at, and say what you want but graphics definitely matter in a game for me (they're just not the only thing that matters)

Yup, with you there haha. In a way it's like, hey, even if it's different, it's not like we have to play it/like it, so if it's just a one-time experiment, I don't mind, haha. I mean, it's more FE-like stuff, so why not? Though of course I think if you stray from a game's main deal too much it should maybe be considered for spin-off status or the like—after all, long-standing series have their reputation as well as fans with their expectations, and I don't think it's fair to neglect those XP

Ah, yeah. Especially the maps. Granted, you can adjust the brightness of the maps, but the default maps were kind of this weird, faded dullish coloration. They tried to be realistic, but sometimes realistic isn't necessarily a good thing. (I might hate Wind Waker as a game, but I cannot argue that at times, the cartoonish style could be VERY beautiful.)

I agree that good graphics aren't the most important aspect. To me, gameplay comes first, story second, and then graphics. Good music is a bonus, although I quite enjoy that too. I can forgive shoddy graphics if the gameplay and story are good enough. (Although I admit I tend to be far more lenient towards 3D games' graphics being meh than I am towards 2D. I'm a bit of a hypocrite in that aspect, but when I think about it, it makes logical sense. It's easier to make pretty 2D art than it is to make 3D.)
