@  xcrash1998 : (30 November 2019 - 11:07 PM) New fictional holiday "Index Day"
@  Fire Blazer : (28 November 2019 - 08:52 PM) yeah just guest bots and stuff I think :( we really were active once upon a time though...
@  kirant : (26 November 2019 - 03:48 PM) No invasion. I imagine a lot of guest bots visiting for indexing purposes.
@  xcrash1998 : (26 November 2019 - 02:15 PM) How is most people online at 959 for the 8th of October of this year? Is that right? Did I miss something or was there somekind of spambot invasion?
@  xcrash1998 : (26 November 2019 - 02:06 PM) I know what you mean, it gets awkard to post something unrelated to the current conversation, and even if somebody picks up on it, it would just become a huge mess in the c hatbox if a multitude of groups talk about different topics.
@  Fire Blazer : (10 November 2019 - 11:45 PM) especially better imo if you want to update on a topic but like only occasionally (e.g. a project you're working on or a let's play of a game)
@  Fire Blazer : (10 November 2019 - 11:44 PM) it's hard for me to explain precisely why but forums just like work better for meaningful discussion over a longer period of time ig
@  Fire Blazer : (10 November 2019 - 11:44 PM) but that's def just not hte same ig, idk
@  Fire Blazer : (10 November 2019 - 11:44 PM) yeah, you can also kind of respond at your own pace on forums. Discord conversations are often like... it's awkward to respond to something that happened a while ago, especially if the server is active, but even just in general. since you sort of need to keep track of multiple conversations at once at times, and it's not like it has a good reply/quote system ala forums, closest thing really is to copy/paste or screenshot the text you're responding to and then type a response below
@  Elwood : (09 November 2019 - 11:29 AM) Adding on to what's been said, I just enjoy the order and structure of the forums. You can look through the threads and know exactly what people are talking about. Conversation get lost and buried on discord which is why I'm not a big fan of it.
@  kirant : (06 November 2019 - 05:31 AM) I enjoy that part of forums too. They become niche communities where you can have very specialized conversations as opposed to the cluttered mess in Discord.
@  Ezra : (31 October 2019 - 01:17 AM) Yeah, part of me wishes I could go back to the times forums were more prevalent. I really enjoyed how even several different forums based off the same franchise could feel so different. It's not like what we now is bad though, I just feel nostalgic for old times.
@  Fire Blazer : (30 October 2019 - 06:39 AM) also forums in general are just not as prevalent, there are so many other ways to interact these days, like Twitter, FB, Tumblr, etc., where you can just throw your thoughts into the void. I think that's the real issue and that the only people rly interested in forums these days are either super dedicated to whatever they're about, have a specific reason/need to (e.g. support forums), or grew up with them and are thus attached to the idea enough to continue to try and use them (this was kinda me for a while lol but things happen, I couldn't keep it up forever)
@  Fire Blazer : (30 October 2019 - 06:36 AM) I've posted on SF for various reasons ofc but in terms of like making friends and stuff it's p. much just been smaller groups/forums, yeah. mainly FES
@  Elwood : (27 October 2019 - 10:08 PM) Only reason I'm even on Serenes was because I had hacking questions. @Ezra yeah I figured it must be an age thing. I've been called an old man by many a child because I use Facebook.
@  kirant : (26 October 2019 - 09:39 PM) It's strange. I don't think I've ever posted on Serenes...period. I've always been a fan of smaller forums.
@  Ezra : (26 October 2019 - 05:49 AM) I think it's because a lot of newer FE players didn't frequent forums growing up. And those that do probably end up on Serenes.
@  Elwood : (25 October 2019 - 07:30 AM) I would love to revitalize this place I'm just not sure how that would be done. I mean with how main stream FE seems to have become I'm honestly surprised we don't have more members.
@  Fire Blazer : (21 October 2019 - 08:04 PM) tfw u not coming here results in not seeing a PM from last month T_T ok gonna try and check at least every couple weeks now even if there's nothing here, lol...
@  Fire Blazer : (21 October 2019 - 07:54 PM) I come here almost never because I've fallen out of habit and basically just accepted the forums are dead :( it's neat you come here every day tho

Hey guys, if you look at the bottom left where the skin selection thing is you'll see a new skin that's currently under "beta". Essentially there's a LOT to be done and I need people's help testing. If you find anything that isn't working how it should, is hard to read, etc., please let me know. Be very specific about your report--for instance, include a gyazo picture and the page you found it on or the type of page eyou found it on (e.g. if something is broken when using search, mention that, or if it only happens with a specific page or section or something, give a link to that specific page or section or whatever).

Naturally the skin is a beta and I'm trying to get Shu to work on the graphics for it. Once I confirm that it's working fine and I get the graphics, the new skin will go live. If people like it a lot, we can contemplate having it replace the darker default skin, which is a little bit less welcoming (lighter colors are a LOT more common for sites now as they seem more open, welcoming, etc.--I'm personally already liking the new skin quite a bit as a result tongue.gif).

List of Stuff:

None, all clear for now!

Colour contrast wise, black over light grey/white always stands out best. Another alternative, which my prof always liked to call the Swedish alternative, is yellow text on a royal blue background and is actually one of the best colour contrasts for impact (which is why many movie posters use a blue and orange/darker yellow contrast)...though that's hardly helpful here.

Also, I just have to point out my Rhythmy avatar works terrific with this new colour scheme. So that's a plus biggrin.gif.

I have to mention that while orange and blue does make a great contrast

I absolutely hate looking at it unless the "orange" tones are really subdued >.>

yellow on blue is...better but something tells me that it's going to be tiring to look at as yellow text says the guy who keeps using white text which is pretty natural since contrast is all about being more striking

also when there's little of the...uh...."not main color" I feel that black on white isn't as powerful as white on black

So in other words, shall I go for boring old black for sig text? Sounds good XD

(I do appreciate the color text, I just don't have anything to contribute or much to say about it in general lol)

I think the grey for the description of forums could maybe a weeeee bit darker. Anyone else agree?

I appreciate "haven't found anything already mentioned" posts too, by the way--the more confirmation I get it's ok to go the more confident I feel about it, which in turn means we can make it live sooner.

Made a couple adjustments. I thought that making signature text black would defeat the purpose of distinguishing it by using another color, so I just darkened to it a darker gold.

I also changed the background texture as I meant to. All that's left is the new banner and the skin is good to go. smile.gif

EDIT: Just fixed that dumb E even though I couldn't find where the original text was located (possibly somewhere I can't access it). With that all the problems should be gone unless anyone has anything new to report. biggrin.gif

Wait really? That's all?

It's like 75% a strict recolor of Lethal (this is assuming the banner will be significantly different) with the icons sticking out since they haven't changed color/been replaced entirely.

Oh gosh no love from Tenebrae XD

Ask Shu to make some new icons then tongue.gif

Also while it might be a recolor it's a ton of work just to do that (oh gosh the memories are kinda painful, so much tedious styling)

I also wanted something like Lethal but more like a uh, foil, like Lethal is all dark so this is all light, now there's a cool theme for both ends of the spectrum

Aside from recoloring, a new banner, and new icons, was there anything else you were expecting? I mean, should I make arbitrary changes to the skin just to make it different? tongue.gif Don't mean it in a rude/aggressive way, just can't think of another way to word it, I'm honestly asking if there's something I should be doing that I'm missing.

Regardless, I personally like Lethal's design a lot, I think it's one of the best looking ones there is (I'm not responsible for the base design in case it wasn't obvious), in terms of general design, its effective width, usage of gradients and shadows, customization options and features, etc., and while I think it's fine to keep the older skins there I feel like continuing to bring in older-styled themes would be kind of a downgrade from Lethal and also hurt consistency, I'd rather make new themes consistent and more modern-looking, even if it's something we haven't particularly bothered with in the past tongue.gif

Not really, since IIRC the several of the old skins don't have too much different with each other otherwise too. Well aside from the background but you already did that. I, personally, feel that there should be a greater use of texture where larger text is present(since the size of the text would make it easy enough to read even if the background has a strong texture), and a bit of transparency that shows the background more(especially given how linear it is +the color of most of its text) might be better, but I have a craving for flamboyant designs in general which isn't really what a lot of the population wants.

I personally feel that it looks a little dull because of it's lack of decoration + the large amount of greyness (If it was like, shiny white or grey with a slight bluish tint it might be less dull looking, though the latter doesn't work very well with black text unless you incorporate black/some dark color elsewhere) but at the same time it's also easier on the eyes this way and I don't necessarily think it's a bad choice objectively. Depending on what the banner changes to it might seem too non-casual, like some kind of help forum on computers or medical advice or something, though. I doubt the banner will cause that effect since this still is a site about Fire Emblem and i'm assuming that the banner will have something to do with Fire Emblem aside from the name only. The banner may have a little bit of a hard time blending in with the rest of it though, if it's too flashy it might take all the attention.

but really no matter how welcoming and comfortable the forum design looks the real reason people keep leaving is going to be the inactivity of the members already here y'know

yes it will of course

I think you do have a point with the blandness/lack of Fire Emblem-ness but I don't want to tint it any color, if I could somehow get some kinda design around the forum that'd be nice but I don't think I'm up to that (especially because I can't really make graphics myself lol), having new icons and a new banner would certainly help a bit though, and maybe having a forum too flashy or stylized isn't necessarily a great thing, I mean other forums nowadays tend to be pretty simple I think (if you really want take a look at SF, it's not exuding Fire Emblem or a fancy design or anything IMO XP)
