I've been reading more of the supports as I play through Birthright, and I think I just managed to pick the good ones on my Conquest run through. Some of these are kind of painful to read. Mostly the S supports. When the other ones are bad, I'm just not engaged. Some (er, most) of the Ss are very cringeworthy.

super late but gonna respond to lots of stuff now!

Is it just me (birthright) that feels like this game has difficulty escalation this time around? I mean normally in FE games it gets easier the further you get in because you get more units and have them leveled a lot more and then just start doubling everything in existence while taking no damage/dodgetanking for days.

I haven't used many utilities like the mess hall, forging, stat boost items, etc. though.

nah I agree, it's one of the things I really hated. I kind of liked the game getting a bit easier or challenging me in different ways or something, idk. like take a unit like Nino for example: despite how weak she is when she joins, she can still be trained to a Sage by end-game because the units aren't that OP. despite that, a map like Victory or Death wasn't such a cakewalk that I was doing nothing/had no chance of dying. I'm not saying the enemies have to be super weak, but I feel like it's a mistake for them to be about as strong as or STRONGER than me, and that was the case in all the 3 routes, I think--Conquest for sure IIRC, I'm pretty sure the enemies were stronger than me AND outnumbered me, and they probably had reinforcements too... >_>;

Conquest was worse. Those stupid staff-users were surrounded by like 3 enemies, and the door was locked so it was literally a death trap. (Since enemies in these games can and most likely WILL 2-shot you and hit percentages are the worst lies ever.)

It definitely does. And the paralogue/xenologue chapters actually scale with you, which is scary. At least in story mode, you can level grind like mad and actually be able to wreck things for a while.

The final boss still 2-shotted my character even at level 17, though. -_-

Thank you. XD (You're a bit late though.)

Ah well, while I'm here, I might as well...

Conquest spoilers:

Spoiler

hit %'s suck

I hate scaling

Conquest's story blew, took forever for anything to actually happen, I get why you felt satisfied but I feel like that's satisfaction for the wrong reasons. I wouldn't call it good writing, anyway.

Finished the game today.

I can't help but think of this during that one ending cutscene

Aqua : What do you think of looking at this view, Tokaku?
Tokaku : I see...water.
Aqua : ...gurl, what have I been saying throughout this entire game?
Tokaku : Huh?
Aqua : "You are the ocean's grey waves..." Take a hint, will you?
Tokaku : Say what now?
Aqua : How much do you even miss me to forget that?! It's the song! The one I'm always singing!
Tokaku : Oh sorry, I was listening to the Hoshidan version of it.
Aqua : The wha?
Tokaku : "ユラリユルレリ、泡沫、思い廻る秤"[/size] and so on.
Aqua : I've never heard of this... (of course not, this game isn't dual audio)
Tokaku : Well, you are just Nohrian scum, all things considered.
Aqua : PEACE TREATY, WOMAN!
Tokaku : That's just our way of saying "annexation" to get people slightly more comfortable with the idea.
Aqua : ...seriously?
Tokaku : Well come on, what do you expect after we took out their crown prince and king for good?

...by the way did they ever explain why Aqua got kidnapped into Hoshido in the first place?

lolwut

uhhh. maybe? probably not? maybe in the 3rd route. I've played all 3 routes and I sure as heck don't know. Even if I was told I just... idk, don't remember/don't really care. they didn't give me much of a reason to. (though now that I think about it a bit more I vaguely recall them explaining her kidnapping and it being not important enough for me to remember.)

"Retaliation"

Also, LOL at the conversation.

The beginning of Revelation was the most depressing and frustrating thing, I swear. If only because it was bringing back bitter memories of CERTAIN RELATIVES of mine who wanted me to come with them for their own selfish reasons, wouldn't listen to me and didn't care what I wanted/how I felt. >_< I GUESS THAT MEANS WE HAVE A REALISTIC FAMILY IN FATES 8D

Spoiler

the writing is SUPER inconsistent, ESPECIALLY amongst routes. I think they even had different people working on it? idk. it's just. ugh. makes me suffer thinking about it.

I kinda stalled playing the game and got back into it recently the last few days. I swear towards the last few chapters the enemy strength just escalated WAY too quickly. I went from OHKOing the enemies in Ch. 22 to all of a sudden getting OHKO'd in Ch. 25. Even my wall, Great Knight Hinoka w/ Guard Naginata goes from full HP to single digits in one turn from all the enemies. Time to start playing defensively, I suppose. I'm definitely going to go Hard/Casual on Conquest.

Yeah, I hated the escalation a lot. It's not really challenging in a fun sense. Like you said... it just means it's time to start playing defensively, really, which becomes a drag. And I don't blame anyone for playing on casual mode as a result when the gameplay can become more stressful than fun.

^ I'm going to admit it: After playing Birthright, I was absolutely positively NOT looking forwards to Conquest at all, simply because of how awful the game scales. So I chose Phoenix mode. AND I DO NOT REGRET IT. AT ALL. Elise and Azura were OHKO'd so many times, I think it beat the number of times my Pokemon were OHKO'd in every Pokemon game ever.

hahaha this happened to me too, I played Normal/Classic and I got OHKO'd like, countless times, lol. I used the HP Tonics frequently towards late-game IIRC to help characters like Azura survive at least ONE blow. And I'll say it as many times as needed, the scaling stinks. Enough that just now I considered playing a patched version where the scaling doesn't stink since it might be way more fun that way, lol.

I just learned this is a thing

http://fireemblem.wi...wiki/Bond_Units

it isn't even voluntary on one end

and people thought the face rubbing was creepy

aaand now *I* just learned this is a thing, lol. seriously? this is next-level of dumb and unnecessary if you ask me.

It's taken me a while, but I've finally gotten to the final chapter. Is it just me, or has this FE game been a bit underwhelming? I just haven't had the urge like other FE games to beat it and play a lot. Are Conquest and Revelation any better?

nah, it's not just you. a lot of older fans feel similarly. it comes down to personal tastes and what people look for in Fire Emblem (or games in general, I guess).

gameplay-wise, Conquest is generally regarded as much more rewarding (but also suffers from difficulty scaling). story-wise, they're all pretty bad, but Revelation(s?) could be fun in the sense that you get what's basically a true/good ending with both Hoshido and Nohr working together.

My friend is still trying to convince me to play FE (edit - clarification: FE Fates) by selling me on Conquest.  He claims it's basically a lot more like the older games difficulty wise and the objectives are a bit more fun than before.

I kinda want you to play it too, but at the same time I don't want to cause you suffering if that's all it's going to be, lol. Conquest is... yeah, gameplay-wise the closest thing to a good FE game we're getting, I think.

Split into 2 posts because apparently there's a limit to how many posts I can quote in one reply, lol

My friend got me Conquest and now I'm playing through Birthright.

Tbh I'm enjoying Birthright's story a lot more (or, Birthright!Corrin a lot more) but gameplay-wise Conquest is way, way more interesting. I'm just kind of plowing through Birthright, and it's all kill the boss/rout, but Conquest had stuff like defending and escaping. Enemies are also a lot tougher and more varied. I had to actually strategize placement/pair up/skills/etc. instead of just sort of waving so and so over that way and letting them kill things.

As far as writing goes, it might just be that I went in with rock bottom expectations after Awakening, but Fates seems a lot better to me. Generally the characters (with the exception of the Awakening expies) seem more like people and less like playthings. I think it helps that a lot of the characters are tied to the story and thus each other and have actual backgrounds because of that. It's still not amazing, but it sure beats Awakening. It at least has its moments where I actually care. I think in large part the weaknesses the writing has come from the dating sim aspects, and I don't know that there's any way to fix those without getting rid of kids and MU.

niiice.

Birthright's story was slightly better for me too, but only slightly.

Story-wise, I think it's perspective/expectations to some extent, yeah. Because I thought the story was atrocious but I was expecting something at least Awakening level if not better, and felt like I got something worse, somehow. I'm not sure how because Awakening wasn't great either but eh.

I also agree with your thoughts in the last sentence. With IS convincing themselves the "Avatar" is now a key feature of Fire Emblem (despite having only really been a thing in FE12/13), I'm afraid we're unlikely to ever get a good Fire Emblem story ever again, not without some "radical" changes from the perspective of IS, lol

Reading the next two posts, yeah, execution is of course a huge part of it—even children in Awakening were much better executed/included than in Fates, IMO (babies put into/coming back from different dimensions where time travels differently? what?) but also this:

"But trying to have emotional investment while also being generic? I feel like the problem with that is obvious."

There's only so much you can do with the premise of a generic Avatar and making the gameplay such that it has shallow dating sim elements. It's holding the story back: putting a ceiling on the plot and the character development in terms of how good it can get. Even at its best it will probably not be that good, I think. I liked the execution of games with paired endings only better because the relationships happened afterwards and were simple and enjoyable in the sense that "less is more". I feel like FE needs to carry those 3 words throughout the entire game.

"Less is more". Quality over quantity. Get rid of the fluff. Not every character needs to support like, every other character. Don't need excess amounts of dialog or grinding features or whatever. A bit of quality optional stuff is cool but there's virtue in not overdoing things.

Having had the chance to read a few of the supports now (thank god for YouTube I guess), goddamn. They are clunky as hell. I can't tell if they just can't info dump properly or are completely ignoring "show don't tell"...but it's just a train wreck at times. Some of them come out alright but it's just downright ugly at other points.

yyyyuuup. It's why I just kind of quickly read whatever supports come up and don't expect much out of them. If maybe 25% of the supports in previous games were pretty good, I'd say 5% of the ones in this are good, and that means only 1/5 as many are good. And I made up those numbers but that's basically how I feel: I tried to account for bias and not say that 50% of supports in say FE7-FE9 were good because they probably weren't but they were at least a bit more enjoyable for me (especially with the "less is more" deal--getting to know characters that otherwise rarely talk and such was cool precisely because we didn't know much about them and they rarely talked), so eh... idk

I've been reading more of the supports as I play through Birthright, and I think I just managed to pick the good ones on my Conquest run through. Some of these are kind of painful to read. Mostly the S supports. When the other ones are bad, I'm just not engaged. Some (er, most) of the Ss are very cringeworthy.

aye, especialyl because the A supports and S supports kinda have to be separate to some extent by nature. I feel like it'd be better the formula was a little more... idk, enhanced? less strict? I dunno, but having 3 conversations and then going to a relationship that ultimately results in having a child from another dimension nonsense is just like... I dunno, shallow. And the actual execution of the confessions and such is... yeah...

Cringeworthy applies to most of the writing for me in this game, and the strategy gameplay is either great or frustrating, and then there's a bunch of nonsense I just don't care for, unfortunately. :(

I fucking hate how you have no choice but to stick with the two resources they randomly generate for you. I was wondering why I couldn't find any information on how to get different ones on your land, turns out I'm just forever stuck with the fishing hole and the lapis spring. I'll never get to have my very own peach orchard...

So much for "My" Castle. Should probably move Rune Factory : Tides of Destiny further up in my backlog to ease up on the bitterness after I'm done with my second run of Fates. Seriously don't know why they couldn't have just added a favorite food and favorite rock option when creating My Unit or something to determine what you'll get.

Like you said... it just means it's time to start playing defensively, really, which becomes a drag.

I just completed Chapter 11 on Birthright Lunatic Classic and even though playing defensively is normal for me the amount of turtling I did in that chapter inside that one wind tornado thing is ridiculous. I feel like I just went halfway through Elincia's Gambit again.

On that note, Birthright Lunatic Classic seems pretty underwhelming so far now that I've gotten used to this whole dual attack / dual guard thing and the weapon triangle. I feel like I'm playing on Radiant Dawn Normal. (Except Chapter 5, in which I resorted to spamming Aqua's dance so she could get stronk enough to deal with the dark mages for me. >_>)

I think I'm in the same spot with the video views.

Most of them don't reveal anything interesting until the A support (and even then, it's just a glimpse as the "YOU MUST LOVE EACH OTHER" god (whichever one that is in Fire Emblem) breaks it all.  And most of that flips between terribad and acceptable.  It's really saddening since you can see flashes of brilliance.  5-6 lines here and there are well done.  But then there are high levels of "holy crap, you got PAID to write this?".  I mean, amateur script writer, sure.  I could see it as it's a hobby.  But someone put money in for this and someone took home a paycheck for it.  It's like watching Jupiter Ascending all over again.

yyyyuuup. It's why I just kind of quickly read whatever supports come up and don't expect much out of them. I don't think that's it.  I still feel that the biggest stumbling block is likely that IS hasn't increased their budget for writing.  So they only have X manhours to write script.  X in older games was sufficient as you had much less to write.  Your scripts were smaller so your efforts focused.  Now you have more work and the same amount of time (or at least not a sufficient time/line ratio)...so you reach in for the easiest way to write the character: one-note tropes.

The characters having less writing seems secondary to this.  Quiet characters become quite interesting when they react with talkative ones.  Or sometimes two quiet characters together get very interesting.  It's about what's written to me and I think there's not enough time here invested in making the characters shine or more than cardboard cutouts.

Part of the problem is also that some of these cardboard cutouts are very dull. Like, Setsuna isn't exactly a deep character, but I find her amusing (in some supports more than others...) and I don't really have a problem with there being a couple silly, comic relief characters around. But there are others that I just find all around boring.

Having looked at more S supports, I also have to ask: is it just me (I'm not exactly the most romantic person out there) or are these all just really bad? Like, not just out of place, but the conversations themselves are just awful and not actually romantic? There are a few where I'm like "okay, yeah, I see it" or where at least it gets pointed out that what was said was awful (I want you to decorate me... with your love), but I can't imagine anyone ever saying most of the confessions.

For a long time, I've wanted a Fire Emblem with a smaller cast but with each character being more important, and I think this game really reinforces that for me. The characters with real connections (e.g. the siblings or the ninja trio) are actually pretty solid (I mean, relatively speaking, at least). If we had more of those people and fewer out-of-nowhere people, I think that would help a lot.

TIL that if you reclass a Nohr Noble to something else while playing Birthright and try to change them back, it will turn them into Hoshido Nobles instead.

I was just trying to get Lifetaker on Evil Twin!My Unit by reclassing them to Dark Knight because I can't buy skills for einherjar...time to go back to a previous save...

...which has 6 hours less playtime...ugh.

TIL that you can in fact choose your My Castle resources if you start over and over until you get the one you want. (Branch of Fate will not count.) MY PEACHES ARE WAITING FOR ME.

^ Wow. O_o That...sucks. But...how did you get  Nohr Noble anyway?

I recruited someone from another My Castle that has the same hairstyle and face and accessory but with red hair/black ribbon instead of blue hair/white ribbon that started out in that class. They also had Aptitude though and I don't want to look like one of those people so I removed that skill but can't get anything else to fill it in because I can't reclass for more skills without encountering that problem again.

Makes me wonder what happens in Revelation. As somebody who has...actually NEVER promoted herself to her noble class, I don't actually know. 8D

I guess you get to choose either class?

(I've been reclassing to Great Lord instead of promoting. I do not feel guilty at all. And as soon as I beat Revelation, I'm going to Grandmaster >>)

Why not just change to Grandmaster after you grab your Great Lord skills?

Also I'm on chapter 22 of Birthright Lunatic now and I find it pretty amusing how it has taken me this far into the game to actually encounter bandits.

Can someone ask on SF's My Castle thread if anyone has a castle that features the captureable bosses? Some of them are route exclusive so you have to recruit them that way.

Because to do that, I need to beat the DLC that is apparently spoilerific if you haven't beaten Revelation yet.

And I haven't beaten Revelation yet because I am now addicted to sims 3. (And also because I want to level grind all my units up to 15 before I continue the story, which is taking forever.)

This is the highest damage I think I've seen thus far. It was way easier to get astronomical numbers in Awakening.

This was a Luna Crit Super Effective Hit on a flier that only had like 7 hp left.

I regret nothing.

yooo, solid. way more damage than I've dealt I'm pretty sure. though with all the different skills and stat-boosters and whatnot it's kind of blown out of proportion for me, haha.
