I know other people out there have suffered it. The term "Post-Anime Depression", coined so because people sometimes get depressed after finishing an anime--they get sad the characters' story is over, often times said characters separate and it feels like those bonds are perhaps broken or lost or there's just a sense of sadness that the show is over, that you can't watch them or be apart of it anymore or whatever.

Why do you think people suffer from post-anime depression? It's nothing to be ashamed of, IMO--it just means you become attached to the show and it was probably a good show or at least a show suited to you if that's the case. Just don't let it get ahold of you too long--that can be bad.

I've suffered it after watching Dragonball Z, Code Geass, Sword Art Online, and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. Without getting into too much detail, what usually hits me is the sense of comraderie--a long-lasting friendship built over the course of the show. It's sad to see the characters go. I want to see them interact with each other and have more fun. In pretty much all instances, that was the case--however, I'd say Code Geass was more than that. While the student council definitely had its bonds, it was naturally also sad to see certain characters die, and when you compare the cast at the beginning of the show to the end, it's changed so much it really does kind of hurt.

One thing I like to think in this case, especially to anyone who think it's silly... is that though characters in a show might be fake, just as actors in reality TV shows are, in their fake world, they're real. And to enjoy the show you need to invest yourself into the world and the characters and imagine them as real. In some shows that's really hard, especially if the show itself doesn't take it seriously enough, but in others it's easy to feel the weight of people's lives... and deaths.

Aside from all that, what do you do to deal with PAD? A lot of people say "watch another anime" but an endless chain of PAD is kind of lame, lol. I like to dwell on it a little but that usually hurts me since it distracts me from real-life, silly as it is. And it definitely gets to me a bit. Doing other stuff helps, as does just keeping yourself busy with totally unrelated things, and I found doing exercise helped a little as well. ohmy.gif

It's the same with any show or long series. I know a couple people who were bummed after the Breaking Bad finale. I don't imagine this is something unique to anime, but to most long running series. When you're used to tuning in every [pick your day] night to see a character to out and do something, you'll lose something if you're emotionally invested.

I come up with new stories. No, seriously. If I'm so invested that I want these characters to continue their adventures, I generally know them well enough to create small adventures in my head.

Yeah I can see that, I just can't become as attached to characters that look like real people who I know are being acted by real people who will probably star in some other shows... sure, voice actors exist too, but I don't recognize most voice actors, so it's not as big a problem.

That being said the language barrier definitely also hurts my ability to become attached to characters lol, and though I won't rant too much about it, reality shows and anime both have their strengths/weaknesses

That's definitely one way to do it, I know plenty of people create fanfics or express theirselves through other ways, unfortunately if it's not canon I just don't feel it's right and I can't take it seriously or whatever, it's not my story and I don't feel I have the control to just change things or extend it or whatever, not to mention it's not like I can actually create new animation... so that solution just doesn't work for me for personal reasons, but I can totally see why people do it and I think it's cool if someone likes a show so much they're willing to not just throw it away as soon as they're done. ohmy.gif

unless you count "I wish this had more episodes/a second season" as post-anime depression(that lasts for like 3 days max without anyone else reminding you) I don't think I have to deal with it

but usually for the former I go on fanart saving binges and get more disappointed seeing a lack of fanart to a show (or get overwhelmed by the sheer amount for some...like Madoka Magica, which made me limit my saving only to very specific appearances of characters)

Haha I don't save any images of anime except for a VERY rare wallpaper or something, and even then that's like a once-a-year thing, I had the same TWEWY wallpaper for ages lol, right now I happen to have an SAO wallpaper but honestly I hardly pay any attention to it so yeah

but yeah pretty much feeling bad about it being over and wishing there was more, that's the basis of PAD I'd say, it's not like "i'm going to kill myself now that this show is over", it's just feeling bad that the show is over and you won't see the characters anymore or whatever, and just an influx of emotion in general from your memories with watching the show and what happened in it and stuff (e.g. sad flashbacks at the end of a show can really stir one up lol, or maybe it's just me I'm a total crybaby tongue.gif)

for the record, i'm still having PAD in a certain way after completing Sword Art Online (while it was running from the first episode to the last)

mostly because
1:I'm reading the (still unfinished) novel of it so I have a reminder
2:It's outright unreasonable for them to not make a second season at least with the amount of ¥cha-ching¥ it gets them (which is why I keep thinking...WHY HASN'T A SECOND SEASON EVEN BEEN ANNOUNCED YET)

oh and because I really

reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally want to see longhair kirito animated

Haha yeah SAO is definitely profitable, we might see one eventually, there's a new OVA or something coming soon, perhaps they're just shaky on how successful it will be given the content, from what I've heard/seen as SAO goes on it gets less and less likeable or something, honestly it's a little silly to call the whole thing SAO when they move out of SAO after the first Aincrad arc or w/e IMO but meh

I'm not into reading so I can't be bothered to read the light novel... even if it's of something I like, reading is just too dull. I can't even read the things I write myself half the time lol

I don't agree with that, unless this is talking about anime-only watchers or something. (I wouldn't say it gets better either, though. Well other than new character designs, those are always fun.)

Sword Art Online(the MMO) is relevant in every arc, at least. It's not as bad as like...A Certain Magical Index, which has Index become almost completely irrelevant a lot of the time...

My first ever experience of Post Anime Depression was with Lucky Star. Why Lucky Star? It was the first anime I'd ever fininshed. It was the first anime I'd EVER watched every single episode of. And considering that every single weekend I would just watch Lucky Star all day, I became REALLY attached to the show. Like. I can't even describe how I felt when I finished episode 24, went to click the next episode, and realized...there wasn't one. That depressed the HECK out of me.

And ya gotta understand. I was going through a really rough phase of my life. So watching Lucky Star was like seeing my good friends after a really tough week.

And well, realizing that it was...over. Well...that really depressed me.

I spent all morning that Saturday looking for "episode 25". And when I couldn't find me, it was as if my friends had gone missing. I couldn't see them anymore.

I was so sad that I just laid on my bed, stared at the ceiling, and cried for like....2 hours. Lol

Since Lucky Star's end, I've had other animes give me PAD, but it's never been as bad. Lol

Other animes that gave me PAD were

School Rumble(This one did get me pretty bad though)
Sonic X
GJ-bu
SMBZ
Powerpuff Girls Z
The Original Yugioh
Yugioh 5Ds
Yu Yu Hakusho (This was the Manga Though)
Murder Princess (SIX FREAKING EPISODES IS TOO DAMN SHORT)
"You'll never forgive me? Like I give a damn."
"You got a jacked up notion of fair play pal...and it's beginning to piss me off."
"Though a fight every now and again does make life a little more interesting...dontcha think?"

Oh Post-Anime Depression,
How I despise thee~

I just finished watching Dangan Ronpa and loved it.
I'm still depressed about many aspects of it though. :c

Other Anime that I am still depressed over:
1. Dangan Ronpa
2. Clannad/AfterStory
3. DN Angel
4. Death Note
5. Code Geass
6. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
“My lady, I may never take my eyes off you again! ...Unless I'm about to run into a wall.”
"Have we chanced upon the forbidden sanctuary of the bikini tribe?!"

Code Geass and Death Note I can kinda see though I think CG was worse because I felt the bonds in that were stronger and the deaths were more dramatic...

might have to look into this "Dangan Ronpa" thing, though I wish people would name their manga and anime better, don't you want people to read it/realize people like me will totally judge it based off the name? sheesh >_>

I like to refer to PAD as "The Void" seeing as how this can happen in any medium.

I remember feeling this hard after finishing Dragon Ball Z, Wlcome to the NHK, and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou.

Oh and Blazer about Dangan Ronpa I recommend either watching or playing the game over the anime since the anime is pretty rushed. But I do recommend it.
