Zero Escape seems okay but I'm not too into puzzles, I'd probably play easy mode. Most puzzle games tend to be like, annoying, repetitive, nonsensical, boring, etc. for me, so while it might be okay if it doesn't focus on puzzles, when most of the entire game is puzzles, it's like a downer. Also, the story seems a bit overwhelming from what you said--I can't be sure but if it's super text heavy and forces me to put a lot of effort into thinking into things and such, that can also be a sort of drainer. I like games where I feel like I progress quickly and the story has depth but not over-saturated with narration, dialog, and general plot points and details. Again, it's just a personal preference, I DO like my 3DS games so if it becomes cheaper I'd probably be up for trying it.

It's pretty much a requirement to play the game on HARD instead. Especially since it's a story driven game, you won't get the full story if you're playing on an easy mode.

The game's focus really is the story in general but there are 10 puzzles in the game and when you complete one, you have the ending solution automatically to look back at when you replay through a section and have to go through that puzzle again. But again, you have to remember to get the two solutions (the green and blue one) and on HARD to actually get the true ending. I wanna think of it as a puzzle game with just really long cutscenes but it gets really really cool later one when you start unlocking different endings and seeing what your character goes through.

Although not required, I'd at least recommend going through 999 first. It'll make some story developments in VLR hit better. tongue.gif

The game is pretty lengthy (although getting all the endings took me about 20-25 hours) but it handles making choices better than in 999 with the new FLOW system that lets you select parts of the game to 'jump' back to so you can make a different choice to see how things pan out.

I think it should be mentioned that VLR is also on the PS Vita and it has better sound quality than the 3DS. Also the 3DS version has a save corruption glitch if you save during a puzzle room. You should probably keep this in mind if you are going to play this game. Also VLR's story is much more complicated than 999.

I don't have the luxury of choosing between a PS Vita and 3DS >_< that bug sounds annoying

And I don't like playing games that are hard on my first time unless they're legitimately enjoyable challenges. (For me this usually means real-time systems or genuine creativity.)

If we're going to discuss the differences, I'd suggest the game play is much more natural on a 3DS, use of dual screens and all.

I would also disagree with the latter. I actually found Virtue's Last Reward to be very simple...it's more complex in the thought that you need to track history a little, but it handholds you through the secret finding and all that, so it's a wash. "Much more" is a bit of a stretch in my mind.

Then again, that's because I knew of all their concepts (such as the Turing test) beforehand, so the "complexity", if you want to call it that, from those terms was lost.

The fact that it's good and fun and is an engaging story. And that you have to play on Hard, because it's the only way to finish the story. (The solutions will be the same if it's easy or hard.)

First of all: Play TWEWY.

Anyway, a tip on the excellent Kid Icarus: Uprising:

Go into the settings and set aiming to the face buttons (XABY) instead of the stylus. (Or buy a Circle Pad Pro, if you feel like you need one.) It makes aiming a lot smoother, and not using the stylus is a plus for people who can't stand scratches on the screen.

Of course, playing with the stylus while using the included 3DS stand is also pretty convenient, but the above control scheme works great. Chances are most of the people who disliked the Ground Battle controls haven't tried using the buttons to aim.

Besides that, the gameplay is great, the graphics are great, the voice acting is cheesy in a few places but overall surprisingly good, the plot was great, and the online multiplayer was a nice step up from any of the DS online gaming I've seen. Plus the replay value is massive, which you should expect from Masahiro Sakurai at this point.
I'd give it 9-point-5 or something, definitely.

Also, play TWEWY.

The problem with button aiming on KIU is that it slower and if you can figure out a way to play with the stylus comfortably it completely beats out the button aiming. Also on multiplayer you won't be doing that well.

Yeah the stylus was hard at first but once I used it for a while it became like second nature, it's not bad design just takes a little practice XP

Name: Ni no Kuni
Release Date: 2013
System(s): PS3

Price Range: Right now it's 60 bucks, at least here in Chile

Comments:

So Ni no Kuni is a really cool RPG game. The story is about a boy named Oliver who goes to "Another World" to save his mom. To do this he starts on the path to become a wizard, and to defeat Shadar who is holding his mom "soul mate" prisoner. I haven't completed the game yet but so far the story is very good, all the characters are like-able, especially one that follows you around constantly, he has the best accent ever.

The gameplay, like most RPGs, is divded into two. Battles and exploring/quests. In battle you can either control Oliver, who can use magic, or, once you get one, a familiar. If you aren't... familiar (I couldn't avoid the pun sorry) with the concept, a familiar is a tamed creature which helps you fight. There are many different types of familiars, different species and different signed ones. Familiar Signs are sorta like your familiars affinity, each one is weak to another. You can get new familiars through the story or, once you get a certain weapon, through battle. It's sorta like Pokémon in that aspect XD. Your familiars can evolve if you give them a certain item, but they revert to level one when they evolve so you have to choose when to evolve them. As I said Oliver uses magic, in combat it is fairly simple, you have a spells section and it costs MP to use a certain spell.

The battle system itself is very simple, you chose who you will control, with the option to switch at any moment, and then you get a series of options. You can move the character of familiar manually and then chose a command for them to follow. Some of these are basic, attack, defend, while others are skills that are learned through leveling up. Each action has a set amount of time before it can be used again, but for basic attacks last long enough that you won't need to wait to be able to attack again.

Exploration is basically what it is in many JRPGs, you walk around a world map and visit cities. There are also quests that you can pick up at an establishment called "Swift Solutions", there are 2 kinds of quests, Bounties which have you search for specific monsters, and errands which work more like traditional quests. Magic takes a much larger role in exploration then it does in combat IMO. You can use it for several things, you can warp back to your world, which you will do alot to find someones soul mate. You can use it to talk to ghosts, animals.

You can restore things to how they were before. A large part of the quests have to do with what I call, because the game doesn't give you an actual name for it, "Heart Magic". A big part of the game is about how Shadar, the Dark Djinn has taken control of the world and is taking pieces of peoples heart. With heart magic you can fix the hearts of these people and make things right again. The quests almost always have some component that require you to fix someones heart, which can be hard at times because you have to find a piece of what's missing before you can help them.

Ni no Kuni is an exellent game, and I probably haven't described it well enough for you to get a clear picture of it (sorry about that) but if you own a PS3 and even remotely enjoy RPGs this is a must buy.
