Has anyone here had to deal with a finger infection?

Specifically I seem to have a felon from accidentally cutting myself on Monday and at this point of time it's started to throb under the band-aid and go red. I do intend to go to the doctor but I guess I just want some placebo for now to be able to look at this thing and not imagine having to amputate it and go Yakuza style for the rest of my life because of a tiny little cut. And if the past two days have been troublesome enough with a painful left thumb, it's going to be much worse without one at all. It is quite difficult (well moreso than usual) to fall asleep when I've had to be vigilant of a potential thief for a few days and when I'm afraid of my finger getting worse from when I can't watch what my body is doing or whether a mosquito or something wants to fuck it up further for shits and giggles.

And if you want to go about trolling I guess I'll just have to tell myself at least it isn't my right thumb, because losing that might finally convince me to fight against instinct and just go to hell already before financial hell gets me first.

Are there red lines going up your hand/arm? I've always been told that that is when you need to start worrying about an infection.

I have cats, so I am quite used to getting scratches/cuts on my fingers which later get mildly infected. (But I have yet to ever contract this so-called 'cat-scratch disease') If your thumb is hurting badly enough that you can't use it, I'd definitely see the doctor, but if you start seeing red lines...that's proooobably when you need to go to the ER or something. That means the infection is spreading to your bloodstream.

No, so far it seems completely isolated to the side of my upper thumb and I can still move it around plenty, it just hurts when I press pretty much anything with that finger. I'll probably still go to the doctor anyway (hate having to make these appointments beforehand) since I've never had to deal with an infection ever that's caused me any noticeable pain before (even though I've been wounded in far less hygenic conditions plenty) but the worst of it visually so far is that for whatever reason part of the damaged area has become yellow.

you may not even have to see a doctor, but that's probably your best bet anyway. personally i'd bleed the wound and clean it with hot water and soap. i've been told that's not a good way to treat infections, but it works most of the time.

I get this kind of thing quite often, actually. It's usually something to do with hangnails becoming inflamed. And there's not much you can do about those except try to clear the skin out from the problem area and waiting it out. >_<

but the worst of it visually so far is that for whatever reason part of the damaged area has become yellow.

Uuuuuuuuh... I dunno what skin tone you have, but if my skin turned yellow, I'd be a bit worried. XD But I've been described as "so white, I'm pink" so yeah.

Yeah, doctors don't like it when you cut yourself. I wouldn't use soap, personally--rubbing alcohol, Sea Breeze, etc but not soap.

I wash my hands like a billion times a week anyway cause I'm just one of those kinds of people. What's that? Speck of dust on my phone screen? CLOROX IT NAO.

I happen to have some rubbing alcohol right now actually...not sure if I actually can bleed it out without using a blade though, since at this point it's probably sealed tight.

It kind of reminds me of those fibers that stick out from citrus fruits or something. No other part of my skin is strangely colored. I have absolutely no clue what this thing is though.

In any case at least I'm not totally freaking the fuck out over this thing going necrotic any minute now...

Might be a blister...or something. I've heard people say that blisters are the body's band-aids. Could also be where the skin has gotten super tight due to inflammation. I tend to have that happen with nailbed injuries/hangnails. Still might be a good thing to have the doctor check up on, but I always hate going to the doctor for things like this because I always feel like they might go "suck it up buttercup" and pay no heed to my concerns. (Male doctors seem to be prone to start thinking that women are hypochondriacs and are overreacting about every little thing. I've had experiences like this before, but this same doctor looked at my mom after she had been complaining about her toes hurting for MONTHS and went "Why didn't you tell me you had a broken toe?")

But yeah, I've always been told that the only time you REALLY need to worry about a cut is when you start seeing red streaks.

Well, there's other times too, like getting cut on rusty metal and not having the shot thing that prevents uh......what's it called? Tetra? Tetris?

I happen to have some rubbing alcohol right now actually...

As a general rule of thumb, I never have anything less than three antiseptics to use on wounds. Sea Breeze, rubbing alcohol and benezol(sp?) peroxide. That being said, I prefer Sea Breeze for scratches, peroxide as backup and alcohol is generally for sterilizing various things.

This is something I picked up from my mom though and don't really have any exact reason for keeping them all on hand other than "they have their individual uses" and "just in case." Each can be used to treat different sorts of injuries.

Went to doctor.

"...are you serious man? That's it? Look just get some neosporin on that thing after washing your hands for a few days and keep a band-aid on. No, don't even pay me for the checkup, I didn't get my credentials for something like this, just go home so you don't waste anybody else's time."

I think he's starting to find it downright insulting how I'm apparently so healthy I basically only ever come over for trivial issues.

Wow, lol

Well at least he didn't charge you.

Although I question why you need a band-aid for a wound that's already closed. I thought the point of band-aids was to protect injuries that are still open or vulnerable to bacteria.

It probably still is vulnerable to bacteria if I consider that from the very beginning it didn't actually seem like the cut went deeper than my skin did but still got to the point it is now. Fortunately it does seem to be getting better...

Background: I worked in a home health care store for two summers.

First thing's first...that doctor has no bedside manners.  Medical staff (and this is something I know universities are starting to actively check for at acceptance to the medical field) should have the ability to talk appropriately to their patients regardless of the situation. Even if, for sake of argument, you are a hypochondriac and ask "I stubbed my toe. Is it broken?".

Okay.  Here's my "non-medical professional" advice:

1) Go to a home health care store.  Any place which sells HHC supplies.  If you see entire shelves of bandages and dressings, you're in the right direction.

2) Explain to them what you've done.  HHC staff, at least where I've worked, are knowledgeable.  Most of the store staff were either ex-nurses or know someone in the store who was an ex-registered nurse.

3) You'll likely get a combination of some dressings (if you're forgoing the doctor and they recommend silver coated dressings, this can get quite expensive...I've seen some sheets at 15 bucks and up for a 2x2 inch square), maybe some gauze, and maybe some compression stuff.  They'll likely be smart enough to explain it all and should be able to walk you through it should you ask.

3a) It is quite possible that the doctor is correct an what's left is just inflammation and there's little you can do at this point.  In which case, I would still recommend you pick up compression dressings.

3b) If they are being rude or telling you to see a doctor, explain your background.

If it doesn't get any better my grandmother was a nurse(might still be registered despite not actively working anymore. Not sure), so I can ask her about it. Totally forgot about that for some reason.

He was more polite than my paraphrasing of the translation really, although he did still directly tell the counter not to accept my money after they asked why I came out so fast.
