And I find a lot of potential concerns with this:

- What if you don't own a phone
- What if you don't have your phone on you
- What if you don't have a smartphone that can run the app
- What if your phone is low on battery
- What if you like having normal "gamer" headsets
- What if you are recording/streaming and want the voice chat recorded along with the game itself
- What if you are using the phone for something else
- What if you just don't like using your phone

This is just a small list of some of the issues a lot of which are significant for the gamer experience, this is incredibly stupid IMO. There is no reason not to give players options. Rather than trying to do things in their own way or whatever they should just accept that PlayStation and Xbox already have acceptable ways of doing party chat and stuff and just copy/use that rather than freaking trying to be innovative on something that doesn't need innovation.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." One of the best and least followed sayings when it comes to technology, especially with like Microsoft, Youtube, and Nintendo, but more relevant to this conversation, Nintendo.

This is going to significantly hurt 3rd-party support too by making it difficult to adapt online multiplayer games to use this weird voice chat system. Even if 3rd-praties do it, gamers will take into account how much of a pain it is and be more likely to choose another console with a better system for it. I know I would, and here I am mostly excited for the Switch.

So I really hope said third-parties along with anyone else who can to pressure Nintendo to reverse this moronic decision. Companies CAN reverse decisions. It's not stuck in stone. If it's absolutely atrocious enough, they can and should reverse it. Remember the big Xbox One reversal? :\

And this could be easy to fix: you don't need a built-in mic for the Switch if you support headsets with built-in mics instead. You don't need a built-in mic anyway, giving people the option to plugin their own headset with a mic is sufficient because that's what a lot of gamers have anyway.

But not giving any option except to use some dumb smartphone app is incredibly closed-minded, restrictive, and IMO stubborn on Nintendo's part. And most of all just dumb.

Sigh. So. Thoughts anyone?

As a gamer who really does not give two shits about in-game voice chat I can see why this is a problem but at the same time does not bother me at all. Why would I want in-game voice chat for online play for Smash? I could just use Skype or Discord to do that than to have it implemented. And when I say online play I don't mean playing with a bunch of people I don't know I mean playing with friends. Everyone has their preference for different online play so it is quite understandable.

yeah I mean I rarely use in-game voice chat myself (in the first place I mostly play 1-player games) but I try to sympathize with other people and also I like having the option, and I like being able to tell people "yeah that thing you want/have come to expect from modern gaming, that's on the Switch ofc", it's hard to recommend the console etc. to people when it's lacking certain features, so that's what kinda gets to me, I want it to be good enough that it can solidly compete with others, rather than it being like, oh, the Switch is still 5 years behind and can't do X and Y and it stinks, if that makes sense. The Switch can't stay the "1st-party games/casual gamer console" forever, I want it to be a console where gamers don't have to find workarounds for things and can just play and enjoy with fleshed out functionality, and I think having things like a good party system, voice chat, etc. helps with that, basically make the experience as easy for gamers as possible and limit the external stuff they need (like not needing a capture card to record video, not needing a LAN adapter for a good internet connection, not needing a smartphone for voice chat, etc. etc.)
