WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE FF

The first FF is not a Generic RPG, it created console RPGs. It became the Generic.
The great thing about FF is the elaborate story lines, and if they do seem similar, you're not paying close enough attention.
It's the same as the FE series, there is a few basic similiarites, but the main differences are in characters and events, anything you get when you actually get into the games.
Ignore every Final Fantasy after 7, as they sucked. 1-7, T, and USA, were the only good ones.
Suikoden(sp) was not a good RPG past the first one as there was simply too many characters for character development, save for a lucky few.
Tales is also as popular as FF, they have roughly the same amount of main console games. Star Ocean 1 stills owns the hell out of all of them though.
Golden Sun series, to be quite honest, just sucked. The story was mediocre from where I got in it, and the gameplay was just awful. Like, I can understand why a relatively few amount of people would like it, but there's not enough people in that mindset that would make it a long lasting series. GS 3 is coming out, after what? Five years? I don't know.
If you want a RPG with puzzles, Lufia 2. Enough said.

BUT FF has teriffic storylines, the Final Fantasy 7 Compilation is awesome.
Wait, Kensai, if they should ignore every FF after 7, does that mean ignore Crisis Core? Because that's my Favorite FF, actually.

GS had some things in it that actually took thinking to finish, unlike Fire Emblem. Its character development was...better than FE, to say the least. The story was admittedly generic, but it wasn' THAT bad.

What.
There is good character development, but kind of like about the 475 of the 493 Pokémon in competive battling - they are ignored and don't play a role. At all. It isn't necessary, and if you tried to develop their characters it would be pointless. IMHO Suikoden has far more mature storyline, albeit the about 90 of the 108 playables not really playing a role.
SC - win.
I'm a tad biased with Pokémon - since its battle gameplay shares similarities with Suikoden (turn based, random encounter, team and character specialization) I tend to like the series. However, I still prefer Pokémon. (a wifi suikoden would be pretty kick ass though; TIERKREIS DUN'T COUNT)
GS still is my favourite RPG, namely for the clever puzzles (even though there are many), the Djinn system (possibly one of the best ideas in a battle system I've ever seen) and fun battles (cue ECLIPSE!!!!!!). Golden Sun really didn't go over the top (over the top would imply that its art and musical direction tried so hard that it made the game ugly/horrible, like many of the GBA Spyro games).
Also, HK - What the hell does the length of the wait between GS 2 and 3 have anything to do with the actual game?
FF may be overhyped... but I've played better, I've played worse. I just don't get the obsessive popularity of the games.
YOU GUYS ARE ALL JUST A BUNCH OF SPOONY BARDS

...wait a minute, what year are we in now? 2009? ...what, the FFs from FE8 on are like WUT?
Seriously, FF already had it's golden era. It is gone now unfortunatelly. To the point I couldn't manage to have fun at the first dungeon of FF12. Any. At all. FFs now look beautiful(The women in them do too, like Shu can state), but just...well, there are better options on pretty much all consoles. >.<
Never really liked GS that much, though. It has a great older feeling, and silent protagonists are win!
...but the Random Encounter rate is so great I can't think a full sentence until the next ba...oh, crap, enemies. >.< ...the puzzles are fun.
And for modern RPGs... Well, I honestly dislike Tales... I just don't know why, I just do. XP I playied the "Best ones", and wasn't motivated enough to go trough all sidequests. XP Others are alright, just now what older(And portable) RPGs were.

I like the Breath of Fire series for RPGs usually though... |
Heh, same. They were a personal favorite. BOF3 being the best IMO, but all up to 4 at least had style. BOF3's gene system was the best, though! XD
That was a golden era for RPGs IMO.
