Anyone else play a little? I can't find a decent match-up online. The people I usually play with either kick my ass, or play like they just learned the damn game. I don't mind having my ass handed to me from time to time, but I'd enjoy an even match here and there you know? I usually play on pandanet. Hit me up on Skype if you fancy a game or two (Skype name is zaklerp). I'm willing to sign up on another server though assuming it's free.

mhmm, i play on pandanet. you have to make an account and download the client, but it's a pretty decent server. the people range from total nubs like myself to people who could probably go pro if they wanted to. and it has bots to play against if you can't find someone to play with(unfortunately the bots are really damn hard for a beginner like myself). i'd be glad to play a game with you later if you want, but I'm gonna be busy till about 10 EST tonight though so i guess probably tomorrow would be better if you want to play.

Other option, PlayOk will let you avoid downloading a client. You still have to make an account (and it's not even half as good tbh), but it's got multiple games (card and board games iirc)

Well if it's not even half as good, maybe I'll just have to suck it up (when the time comes) haha

if you want to learn, go game guru is a pretty nice place to start. decent basic tutorial somewhere on that website. the guy who made the website is a pro of some sort or the other so i assume he's probably qualified to write basic instructions on how to play

learning how to play is like

the easiest thing about baduk

mastering it

COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STORY

Agreed. I learned as much as my father was willing to teach...and that was about it. I decided after that Xiangqi was way more fun....especially the offensive game you can get compared to standard chess. Cannons are the best units ever. laugh.gif

Now to learn Shogi sometime...it sounds like Chess but way less "queen bashing board" oriented.

I never tried xiangqi out before

I did, however, play its korean ripoff janggi as a kid a lot and liked it a lot more than baduk for sure

Shogi is soooooooo much fun. I'd love to learn xianqi sometime, I've just never gotten around to it. But yeah, once you learn the basics about shogi it's much better than western chess.

Am I the only one who's ever only played Chess? Come to think of it I actually used to be pretty into Chess... that was a long time ago though

I used to play chess as well, but I started stomping everyone in the chess club at my school and nobody in my family was good enough to beat me either (I'm not that great to be honest, it's just that everyone I got to play with was downright awful), so I moved on. But moving from chess to something else really isn't much fun.

Shogi is fun except for the "bring pieces back" rule. That screws me up so badly after I played a few games.

Chess is alright...it's just that the number of pawn walls and stalemates deployed are kind of depressing.

i find that dropping pieces back onto the board adds a level of depth you just can't get out of chess. you can't just pay attention to what's on the board because it can change so quickly, and if you lose track for even a second you could end up digging a pretty deep hole for yourself. don't get me wrong i'm not saying one is better than the other, it's just that i enjoy shogi more.
