Is there any in game events or changes involving said character anywhere or was it merely a character background kind of thing.
I don't see a in game calender anywhere so unless something happens when I play the game on the acual real life date (assuming my 3DS is properly synced with the proper date) was it only for show? Merely curious, I don't want to possibly miss any cool in game events.

In the Barracks, they get a 3-in-a-row random tile event thing.
IIRC they're all different ones, one for an item, another for a buff, and the last one is EXP or weapon levels or something.

Yep, it keeps in sync with real-time. The characters even comment on the time of day it is. (Example: if you're playing at noon they'll comment about getting lunch or if 3:00 a.m they'll ask why you haven't gone to bed.) Except mine never works right...my Nintendo products always get time/date screwed up for some reason. Probably because my internet cuts out randomly at awkward hours or something.
But yeah, that's how birthdays/barracks works. When it's a character's birthday (all birthdays are listed in the "roster" option of the barracks too, btw. Just click the character's name and it'll say it) they'll get three "special events" in the barracks: A stat surge, then exp/proficiency, and then a random item. It's Maribelle's birthday today (or so my game says...see above for mine always being ahead XD) and she got a strength + res surge, 23 exp and a...log. Go give that thing a noble home.
