From left to right:
A generic swordsman, Vanguard Ike, Dharok (from the MMORPG Runescape) with and without a cape. I'm sure the only one that comes close a 16-color sprite is Dharok.
So, any advice?

It's just a few sprites I've worked on
From left to right:

They aren't bad, and I wouldn't worry about 16 colors unless it's for some special project that requires 16 color sprites.
The colors themselves could use some work, and the shadin is meh--there are lots of "blobs" of one color and it looks bland, and other colors could use more contrast, and there is some pillow shading here and there.
Don't be put down by my comments though, everything can be easily fixed and it's really not a big deal.
