so it turns out i'm one of the very few fans or 3rd wave ska in the city of Kerrville Texas(there might be two people other than me...highly doubt that many though). so the only way for me to discuss good music and not hear "we likes cuntry music 'round here" would be on the interwebs. so lets have at it.

My favorite ska band right now(it changes from time to time) is streetlight manifesto closely followed by suburban legends.

apparently ska isn't dead yet. an album just came out a few months ago

inb4 some smartass like me comes along i'm aware that it's only one song there. it's pretty good stuff imo. ska isn't for everyone, but it's some good chill out music.

Edit: i should note that this isn't third wave like most people who listen to ska at all with probably know. it's more traditional/closer to reggae

I like it. It's like raggae with a funky twist.
Dave Grohl is rock and roll personified.

Actually a real smart genius man, but I'll never show it.

ska was originally a derivative of reggae so that makes sense =P most of the stuff i listen to though is called 3rd wave. it's this stuff mixed with a little punk.

Can someone explain what ska is? Some kind of awkward music genre?

That's basically correct. I'm not the best at explaining, but I can suggest a song to listen to that pretty much sums up what Ska is. Sell out by reel big fish is a good one. The headitation song there is just about as far away from what ska is to me though. I only called it that because that's technically what it is.

It's really not the kind of music that everyone would want to listen to, but I find that basically everyone who does I can get along with. Must be a personality thing that makes people like a horn section with their punk.

Edit since i'm not on my phone anymore: just to be clear that gilla1ness guy does make ska music. it's just that it's closer to traditional ska, and that stuff is basically indistinguishable from reggae if you're not paying attention. in fact i was playing it at work, and most people asked my why i was playing Jamaican music(lol fuckin texas man). what i like to listen to is officially called 3rd wave ska, and that's what the band reel big fish plays. it's basically where ska became its own genre instead of being a branch of reggae. there's still a lot of variance within 3rd wave too. you've got stuff like streetlight manifesto which is closer to punk, you've got reel big fish which is closer to pop, the aquabats which made a kids show for a bit. it's a surprisingly diverse style which complements covering music very well when done properly. especially 80s music. there's a duran duran tribute album done all by ska artists actually. pretty good shit.
