So there's been a spurt of serious topics here recently, and I figure I'd round it off with the big important one. Religion.

We can start off I guess by getting people to state their own faiths. I'm an atheist, aways was, though a good portion of my extended family are Christian fundamentalists (and more than a little crazy).

Discussion and arguement are welcome, but no flaming or bashing please.
Have fun.

Agnostic. I'm not into the whole "Oh martyr yourself because god told you to" thinking of most religions.

I'm an Atheist. I prayed like....five times a day, but nothing every happened. I thought that if there really was a god out there, he wasn't doing a real good job.

Basically, its belief that a higher being created the universe, and the higher power in the universe is reason.

Our reason is the higher power. There isn't a god going around giving us choices, and we aren't destined to follow it. It gives us a reason as to how the universe was created. Also, there is no afterlife. Its almost exactly like Atheism, except that we believe that some higher being created the universe. Atheists don't know what created the universe, and Agnostics believe...no higher being created the universe.

I believe Deism is when people believe there is a higher being (namely a God of some sort) who created the world and just stopped right there, not caring for His creation. So basically, in practice it is atheism although it comes in a different form. Am I correct?

Atheism is the lack of belief in God. Agnosticism is when a person is unsure whether there is a God or not, but opens up the possibility that there might be some higher being out there.

You all know what I am by now -__-

I'm sorry, but, I've come to a temporary decision.

The last time I had a topic like this there were problems and religion tends to start many, many problems. I'm going to discuss with the rest of the staff how this should be discussed. I'm thinking of making a Mature Discussion section (although I'll probably call it a more interesting name) and place serious threads there.

Sorry for this, look out for an announcement on what we are going to do with serious topics that require maturity, knowledge, etc. to be discussed like these.

I classify Deism as a religion of salvation and science combined into one, universal belief. I think the main point is to explain the big bang theory, and I mean the part about the entire universe being compressed into a single point of little or no mass. The question was, what created that point? Deism says the deity (or deities? I don't remember if it's a monotheistic religion or not) created that single point of mass, which then exploded (or imploded, my memory isn't great at the moment :/) to the blah blah blah, most of you probably know the big bang theory.

^ I may be wrong about most or all of that, don't flame me for it please, but I'm 95% sure that's correct...

And also, I'm personally Catholic, but I do...question...my beliefs. That's about as far as I'll go with that.

EDIT: Sorry Blazer, didn't see you posted before me. It's okay if you delete my post.

"Die Religion ist das Opium des Volkes!" Karl Marx
I don't speak german but I'm sure you all know what that means. (Just look at the two words you know)

But I find that a really wise saying, after all it's difficult to shake someone of religion (as are drugs) and people who "awaken" from their religion are often resentful of their religious selves and the religion they were a part of (just like druggies go on about how they never were happy with themselves and are so happy to be "cured")

I know this is heavily anti-religious, I put in "awaken" to upset those of you who are religious, feel honoured;)
