I've tried starting on a novel, but I find I'm much more suited to short stories. They can pack just as much punch as long as you choose your words and scenes carefully, and are overall less stressful in the long run imo. No long term commitment for the most part. In half a month you can have a nice polished story that's enjoyable to read, and also a bit of fun to write. But that's off topic.

I like your maps a whole lot. They look like fun. Also I apologize for not making that mug. I really had meant to, but got caught up in stupid college applications. Apparently trying to apply for college in a different state is a massive pain.

you make a good point, but the thing with short stories is simply that you can't do as much. Not enough time to build up a world or large cast of characters or like and combine a lot of ideas that really impress over time. I mean, if you look at some of the most popular book series... well, tbh I don't know a lot as I'm not really a reader, but Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Game of Thrones come to mind and to my knowledge they all have a fair number of books. It's as simple as "more words = more development and more events = more interesting over a long-time". Yeah, short-stories can pack a lot of punch in a similar way as to how a 1.5 hour movie can be great compared to a 25-episode series that essentially lasts 6 hours, but sometimes they just don't work.

You probably know this though, I guess I'm just saying that while short stories will work for some purposes, they don't really work for mine because of the higher level of ambition, so there's not much choice there, haha. I'm glad they work for you though and I think ti's definitely worth keeping in mind as short stories can also be very beneficial in other regards (if you're one to start stories a lot but not finish them, maybe actually finishing a story, even if it's a short one, could help work on the end-parts of your story-writing... and well, finishing it in the first place, haha).

finishing a long novel, or any story really, is a pain imo. I never feel like my endings are strong enough, so I end up rewriting them twelve times before I flaky settle for something that's just ok. Takes away a lot of my motivation to eventually end projects. The only short story I'm really proud of was an imitation of someone else's style. It's literally my only strong ending. But I digress, novels and short stories definitely both have their place. They're completely different animals in most cases, and while I would love to write an epic journey I just don't have the patience to flesh out more than one character at a time. I could write a novel with just one or two big characters like Frankenstein for example, but I really dislike that style of writing. This has me in the mood to write again though XD. Might do another style imitation to see how that goes.

Eh, I started it. XD

Short stories are nice and I do like making little "chapters" that exist outside my main novels. But usually my ideas require a LOT of ground to cover. I usually have to break them into separate "books" (files) because at one point, MS Word is just like 'I WAS NOT MADE TO WRITE 300+ PAGE NOVELS WITH OMG!'

I agree with the "or any story, really," part. If you're really serious about your writings, you will spend 5 years perfecting your works regardless. <<;; I've rewritten one story, which I've titled Lightning Hero, like 5+ times before finally coming to a point where I'm completely satisfied with it. Blizzard Blade has been through 2-3 rewrites, I believe, and had its last 1/3rd completely redone, simply because I realized the novel ended on a super sucky note so long as that one character remained dead.

(on topic)

Man, I wish that one dude's question had gotten answered over on sf. They asked how "banned" characters were handled for the player character. I'd like to know as well, because I was thinking of adding EX chapters similar to FE8's Chapter 5x to S&E. To further "flesh out" the game's world without actually having to move the main characters to those areas. I already had a few chapter ideas in mind, actually.

Then there was also my idea of unlocking an extra game mode after you beat Ryan's story, with someone else as the main character. Similar to FE8, I guess, except that the extra route would be completely and totally different from Ryan's, with a different lord, different playable characters and different (and more difficult) maps. In the end, it'd merge together as the characters are united, but at least the first half of the game would be different, I guess.

sounds like perfectionism, and perfectionism is the bane of completion, and therefore the bane of success. though just completing something doesn't make it good, either, so finding that balance is what anyone who works with such things--books, games, movies, etc. has to deal with

If I'm going to publish something, I want to make sure I have no regrets.
