Zero Escape seems okay but I'm not too into puzzles, I'd probably play easy mode. Most puzzle games tend to be like, annoying, repetitive, nonsensical, boring, etc. for me, so while it might be okay if it doesn't focus on puzzles, when most of the entire game is puzzles, it's like a downer. Also, the story seems a bit overwhelming from what you said--I can't be sure but if it's super text heavy and forces me to put a lot of effort into thinking into things and such, that can also be a sort of drainer. I like games where I feel like I progress quickly and the story has depth but not over-saturated with narration, dialog, and general plot points and details. Again, it's just a personal preference, I DO like my 3DS games so if it becomes cheaper I'd probably be up for trying it. |
It's pretty much a requirement to play the game on HARD instead. Especially since it's a story driven game, you won't get the full story if you're playing on an easy mode.
The game's focus really is the story in general but there are 10 puzzles in the game and when you complete one, you have the ending solution automatically to look back at when you replay through a section and have to go through that puzzle again. But again, you have to remember to get the two solutions (the green and blue one) and on HARD to actually get the true ending. I wanna think of it as a puzzle game with just really long cutscenes but it gets really really cool later one when you start unlocking different endings and seeing what your character goes through.
Although not required, I'd at least recommend going through 999 first. It'll make some story developments in VLR hit better.
The game is pretty lengthy (although getting all the endings took me about 20-25 hours) but it handles making choices better than in 999 with the new FLOW system that lets you select parts of the game to 'jump' back to so you can make a different choice to see how things pan out.
