Is it just me, or are video games getting worse?

I have been playing Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice ever since it came out, and my general experience thus far has been that I am far too vigilant in finding errors in everything and anything--including long before they're supposed to be brought to light, and even in things I'm not supposed to find fault with.

In trial three, specifically, there have been many things that I noticed but was unable to call upon (some I got to later on, and others are still unexplained) and it eventually got to the point where I didn't even know what to do anymore because my own problem solving skills were apparently better than the game's. So then the big plot bomb was dropped, which included something hugely stupid, and I just...ragequit.

[6:03:47 PM] ElectricLeafeon: ...
[6:03:49 PM] ElectricLeafeon: nope
[6:03:51 PM] ElectricLeafeon: I'm done.
[6:03:52 PM] ElectricLeafeon: Done.
[6:04:17 PM] ElectricLeafeon: done with this nonsense
[6:05:53 PM] Gaper: what happened
[6:06:08 PM] ElectricLeafeon: this extensive leap of logic-defying just ticked me off

Now that I've put the game down, I realize that the majority of the games I've played lately have inspired this kind of reaction. In fact, 3 out of 4 of the last few 3DS games I've bought had something that annoyed me to the point of quitting, and most of it was completely story-related. (Those instances being Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, FE Revelation and finally, AA6.) The only one which didn't result in this reaction actually has no plot. I DID eventually go back to them later, after calming down (although Fates took the cake there) but this does seem to be a problem.

So now I'm wondering if this is a problem with me (likely overreacting) or if video games in general have dropped quality to the point where they're actually a little frustrating.

I sadly am that kind of person who can't really take stupidity and logic defiance which might be feeding my issue, but I just want to know if anyone else is having these issues or if it really is just me.

Well in terms of story, I can tell you that in general because it is much easier to awe people through graphical promises in advertising (you can't really advertise the quality of the story without getting into spoilers) a significant amount of investment goes into that alongside the general expectations we have.

As for Ace Attorney though, they're probably just kind of running out of ideas for it being ongoing for so long and not really changing up the formula, so there are flops here and there.

Maybe those faults were always there and you're getting progressively better at noticing them?

Maybe those faults were always there and you're getting progressively better at noticing them?

This is a fair point, i'm scared to read the rest of the post because I don't want spoilers on AA but maybe it's your own intelligence or perception that's changing and not the games? Or maybe it is the games, or the staling of the formula... I definitely think it's fair to assume there are multiple factors involved having an effect at different levels

As far as games getting worse in general goes... that's such a broad statement I can't say for sure. I mean, I guess in many ways besides graphics, yes: music feels less inspired because games tend to go with what's "comfortable", for instance. With graphics, it's more about realism, so there's a feeling amongst some people that outside of indies you don't get a lot of stylistic games. There's the fact that games are getting bigger and bigger and there are more bugs/glitches and such though part of this might also be that people have less tolerance for such things. It really depends on what games you play and what your gaming background is, though.

There's also the whole "games are getting easier" deal, I shouldn't need to go into that, and the aforementioned "using the same formula makes the game stale, but devs can't seem to improve on that without messing up somehow or ruining what made the series great" (I'd argue FE and Tales of suffered from this to some extent with them going in different directions in order to try and change and IMO both of the series got notably worse since then)

I suppose at least in the last couple of years it does feel like there have been less SUPER IMPRESSIVE games. 2014 had a fair # of good games from Nintendo but I dunno. Maybe I'm just not playing the games that ARE really good, though. I can't just go on Metacritic and look up the allegedly great games based off of scores and buy/play them as I feel like, I don't have the time/money for that.

Also gotta consider that technological limitations were a sort of... catalyst for innovation. Just like with Nintendo's hardware at times (we couldn't have gotten awesome games like TWEWY without the touch screen and dual-screens of the DS, for instance). Technological limitations have resulted in unique art styles and different sounding music ("retro" music) in the past and with less expectations you didn't have to worry about not just making a great game, but also giving it local/online multiplayer with good servers and chat support and updating it with patches and adding in events and bla bla bla, people expect so much from their $60 games on non-Nintendo consoles.

Maybe some of it is just the change of times and ourselves. We're not as awed or inspired by games. Maybe we're too stressed or busy, or just are missing that same level of inner kid, or we've gotten used to the things that used to impress us, or whatever it is.

There are just so many things to think about, I can't decisively say "games are getting worse". When I look at the list of games I play, sometimes it does feel that way, but in the end, what games are you talking about, because I can't play all the games, and there are more games coming out, and bla bla bla... a lot of the series I play have gotten worse, sure, but there are also some awesome new games I didn't play/have before (like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Bayonetta 2, and TMS#FE in relatively recent years) so yeah. *shrug*

She was only talking about writing in videogames, Blazer.

"not being limited by hardware, so the games just aren't as good" feels like a bit of a lame excuse. I get why you say that, but I just don't accept it as a real reason. As long as you have someone watching the writers saying "ok no don't call it tehm'pul temple" mistakes like that won't happen. Tbh with the zero escape series alone chunsoft proved that you can have an amazing story with solid and satisfying gameplay while still giving some ok graphics(I mean my laptop can't even run ztd. Doesn't meet the minimum requirements, and it's not exactly a toaster). My point is that you can't tell me that the bigger companies can't do something that someone small by comparison like chunsoft can. The problem here is the audience. By buying games worldwide we tell the gaming industry what we want. There has been an explosion of "casual gamers" that is essentially overwhelming the "hardcore gamers" and making the developers move towards things that the "casual gamers" want because that's the audience now. That has nothing to do with writing;(actually it might, but I don't want to get into that. Could take me a long time to get off a tangent like that)however, it does contribute to people who really love games feeling a little let down when we don't get the qualities that we are used to.

Edit: i hate to say it this way which is why my post was as long as it was, but really it all comes back to money. they run businesses. they have to think in black and red. that's the driving force behind the things i'm complaining about really. it's not the only problem of course, but it is one that causes a lot of other problems.

No details were said about said case's plot. You're safe.

There's also the whole "games are getting easier" deal, I shouldn't need to go into that, and the aforementioned "using the same formula makes the game stale, but devs can't seem to improve on that without messing up somehow or ruining what made the series great"

TBH AA6 seems as if it's written for teenagers with ADD because it gives you flashbacks to things that literally just happened under five minutes ago, and even gives you a mini tutorial AND a prompt for a fuller one later in the game, after having formerly forced a full one on you in the first trial. Which is like...WHY WOULD YOU NEED A TUTORIAL TWICE?! SRSLY. If you're that dumb, you shouldn't be playing as a detective. D<

I kind of feel like they were trying to make the game easier...but this is a text-based game, pretty much. You can't make it easier. So in the process they actually made it HARDER because I'm focusing on all the wrong contradictions 99% of the time. :/

Maybe those faults were always there and you're getting progressively better at noticing them?

As someone who actually started at AA5 and then went back, I can effectively say that in the case of Ace Attorney, this does not seem to be a thing at all. Games 1-4 were commendably well-written with very few errors at all, aside from the single case of "the miracle never happen."
