Ok so i hardly have any idea what i have been doing at all but i think i might be getting the hang of hit. try not to be to harsh about shading (because i've never been a good shader) this is my first try at doing this and i figured i would do a spliced together character first. one problem is his ear. cant seem to recolor it right...

oh and this is fe7 colors only (i do plan on making more updates this is just and early draft i guess? lol) cant wait till i change armor color on him though =p

umm if the image isnt big enough or what not let me know how to change all that (because im not relaly sure)

anyways here he is. his name is Mason (disreguard jaffar over there...hes only there for skin color referencing)

That's, ahm... not bad. The part around his ear there is a bit messy, and there's a green line under him, but that's not the real problem here; the ear is. Replace the orangey bits with a blacker color.

Actually, find a palate without the orangey part and all. It looks off on the chin, eyebrows, side of the face, and ear.

the green line is to help me with the border dimensions-least i shouldn't be over i think... (will be removed after im done with him)

yeah ear is being a pain.
reason being i used uhai body partial neck and ear, and harkin face and partial neck (why the colors are messed up)

@Line: Ah, okay. I have no further complaints there then.

@Ear: Try, like I said meant, using a darker dark color in your palate.

Yous eem to be simplifying his neck shading to one color, which looks kinda bad. I would keep the neck shaded like it was before. And for teh face, you don't want to just make a circle of a darker skin shade around a lighter skin shade. This is called "pillow shading". Realistically, people's faces aren't brightest in the middle and darkest in the corners. I would reference the face of someone else to get a good idea of how stuff should be shaded.

But anyway, for your first portrait, that is actually pretty good, IMO. I see some potential there. Good luck with your future sprites, yo!

The top hairline along with the neck looks very weird.
And there is a random line on his neck....
I can name all characters you used:
Uhai, Eubanks and Harken

ok i hope this is a bigger improve ment. messed with the shading more (hope its at least a little better) gave him a little scar above his eye (not hard to tell which one lol) and hopefully shading and what not with chin and ear is better.

edit: messed with his hair a little bit and it looks better imo

Still not bad, but I think the other armor color worked better and the scar is pretty out there. Also, the jawline isn't great, and the neck and face shading both need love (still pillowshaded).

But like Blazer said, it's pretty sweet for a first portrait.

haha thanks ill try getting to work on that right away...

also dammit i knew i forgot about something.

just reread felover3's basic splicing tut (credit goes to him as to why i was able to do as decent as i did - even though i still am not a good sharder) and i should have known there was an easier mether to coloring -.-

lucky for me i can go back to one of the erlier saves (which will save me a but-load of time "maybe")

ok hows this change to the chin? ill get to shading later... xD
im still gona use green for his armor color (nobody will be able to change my mind on that =p
lol edit #2: forgot to say that reason im using green is that his hair colr will be changed to more a dark brown so should work nicely with the green clothes
edit 3: shading is improved (if at least a bit) from before i hope. might put that scar back on but idk at this point lol

The chin's better, but still not perfect. The palette is amazingly better. As for the scar, try to rip one from an existing sprite.

lol ok now i have to ask you just where at do i need to fix the chin cause now im lost xD

also have no idea what you mean by the palete being better xD

and yeah i figured i'd look at other scars and go from there. (i'd rather make my own scar than splice one in)

The palette is in essence the range of colors you use. A better palette means that you used better colors.

That's the simple idea, anyway, I'm sure some spriter could make it more complex...

Didn't update the chin because like i said im at a loss now on what to do.
lol im being a pest but this is kinda fun plus i literally have just about all the free time in the world (although that is going to change - but not by much)

anyways decided that making a scar would be annoying even though it looked easy enough to make so i just spliced in a partial scar and here is the turn-out

ok after looking at the sprite for a bit i noticed that the whole chin problem may have happened because of the left shoulder...so i changed it a bit (because it got all spliced outa wack when i did the inital splicing) hopefully its better not but who knows till you guys tell me xD

tried to do better shading on the face but im still not sure if its good. it looks good to me but like i've said im not one thats good with shading xD

The face should have a lot more of the lightest skin tone in it, you have kind of random blobs of the lightest but it's almost all the middle color. I only use the middle color for the left side of the face, shading around hair, and the jawline.
