Okay, I have to admit something.
I've only ever completed FE4 once. And that was 4 years ago.
Now I'm back and it's kicking my ass.
I just got past the first Chapter after multiple restarts and I'm wondering what I should be doing, who I should be using and does anybody have a link to a better translation patch as my one seems to be a bit lacking.
Any help is advised haha

If the one on FES is the one you're using then idk
I always thought that FE4 and 5's translation patches had slight issues
as for FE4 I really didn't enjoy my time with it and never beat it so I can't say :\ hopefully some other nerd here can help out lol

There is a newer FE4 translation patch here:

For some general advice, the mounts are the best units. Sigurd is great and you could solo the first part with him if you give him the bands. Use savestates a lot or set the auto save after each turn on in the settings to minimize frustration with these long maps. Other than that the best thing I can really say is play smart.

Play conservative and smart, like Cero says. And decide who you're pairing early on and stick with it. I used a lot of tight formations so I could have a fighting chance of getting out of jams in big battles, only a handful of units are to be trusted on their own early on, honestly. Sigurd, Cuan, maybe Aira, etc.
As far as who to use, I really found Lex and Beowulf to be helpful. Never bothered much with Arden to be honest. Whateva.

Leave arden in the castle. He can't move far enough to be useful. The rest of the advice here is solid too. One more thing I can say is to abuse the hell out of the arena. When I played it I made savestates before every arena fight so I could get as far as possible in the arena with each character before even starting to deploy characters. That way you get max experience and gold out of each chapter. Oh yeah, choose who you pair dew with wisely. His children tend to have marvelous growths.
One more thing: get leaf promoted fast. He stays with you into second generation, and can be a power house. I forget which chapter it is, but early on(like chapter 1 or 2.it's not the prologue chapter anyway) if you have him talk to cuan he gets a brave lance. Or whatever it's called in 4
