#123593 Zero Escape 3 (and other Aksys stuff)

Posted by JuneoftheMearkat on 04 July 2015 - 08:15 PM

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-

Are you kidding me?! I was looking up new info on the hiatus of ZE3 just last week (apparently it got number 1 on some ranking site for games people wanted to see, above things like Persona 5, hot damn) and I had heard there was some kind of teaser on the aksys site that looked ZE3 related, but nothing had been confirmed yet. I'm so glad the fanbase pulled through with all the campaigns, the ZE series has always had its sleeper success from the overseas fanbase (like 70 to 80 percent from what I've seen) and when I heard they weren't making the third yet due to lack of success in japan, I died a bit inside.

THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER.

Honestly, I think this game will sell well (at least in the western market) but even if they don't make another, its not as huge of a loss as before (when ZE3 was on hiatus) because the series was envisioned as a trilogy anyway. I have no idea what they're going to do about story for this one though, considering how VLR went O_o.

Glad to hear it XD It seems they're really hoping the fans are going to carry this game, so hopefully it pans out and it sells well! I'll do my best to play the rest in time for this one so I can buy this one and support, but you hardcore fans need to somehow convince people to buy it I guess XD the article I linked to just really made it sound like this can't happen without the fan's support and that if it releases and does poorly they'll probably never have another game like it again :(

Yeah playing the first two is definitely helpful to understanding the third one (although ZE1 and ZE2 had many parallels, they were standalone enough that you could kinda get away with it, but I doubt that for ZE3). What's your backlog right now XD? All the games I want (now adding this one to the list) are out next year unfortunately, so I've been sticking to the PC release of Valkyria Chronicles as of now and really liking it.

#123180 Anime/Manga Masterpieces

Posted by JuneoftheMearkat on 13 June 2015 - 02:59 AM

The idea of a "masterpiece" has the tough dichotomy of possibly referring to the creators own "masterpiece" out of their own works, a general "masterpiece" of the genre, or a "masterpiece" within the media medium of anime itself. These rising levels of classification aren't necessarily linear in scope either; there are series who may be considered masterpieces of anime, but can't compete with more obscure powerhouses within their own genre. Something like Sailor Moon, which invented many magical girl conventions that have since been refined and twisted innumerable times just can't compete with newer series that have perfected the best parts of its formula. In reverse, if a series is insanely popular and influential through decades, regardless of its subjective quality or future cited flaws (Evangelion would be the definitive example I can think of), does that make it a "masterpiece"? Who knows, I suppose it depends on your opinion *shrug*.

For instance, I consider Cardcaptor Sakura to be creator CLAMP's masterpiece out of all their works (if you didn't know, CLAMP is actually a group of 5 ladies who are well known for a handful of popular manga/anime such as Magic Knight Rayearth, XxxHolic, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle(which even reuses Cardcaptor Sakura's leads), Kobato, and many more). It's also very popular and has been iconic for many years now, so plenty would say it's a masterpiece within the anime realm as well (I do as well to a degree, just to clarify, but not more than my top picks). However, within the magical girl genre, while it does do certain conventions at a top tier level (the main romance, character growth, solid magical lore, the unique peaceful yet mysterious atmosphere) it has tons of hot contenders that are critical and fanbase darlings (we pretty much listed all the ones I know on this forum; Revolutionary Girl Utena, Madoka Magica, Princess Tutu...). Up against them, do its best executed traits fall short, or can they coexist because they're too different (or even if they're similar)?

In the case of the first classification, I may consider Baccano! to be superior to Durarara!, but there are other people who may feel its the other way around within that creator's works. Does that mean only one of them can be a "masterpiece"? Can a creator only have one magnum opus in their lifetime, with everything else being relegated to second place no matter how good it is?

Of course, not even getting into the issue of an anime that has too many genre's to really be classified (or whether we should be categorizing things like that at all).

I think this is a debate born of comparing things in the first place; its hard to put intrinsic value on something without comparing it to something else, that's just the way it goes sometimes.

@Thezalor that's an interesting take on the word. I do feel a bit similarly in that I think a masterpiece is someone trying to do something and really succeeding in that, like mastering a certain genre/type of story-telling/something, I dunno exactly—and I do think of Oda (the One Piece creator) as a genius for what that's worth, so yeah

This sounds like a good take on the word. Taking it further by defining exactly what aspects the work does best, or whether you think its just completely unique in some way compared to everything else helps to shape your view when you have to explain it to everyone.

#123061 New Dev Blog Post, Screenshots

Holy crap I didn't think of checking that out. Just looked up the lyrics now that you mentioned that and they're pretty dark, man. Though thats to be expected for a Megaten series game. I'm sure they've got something up their sleeve about the details they're giving to the fanbase.

#122627 Palette Problems.

Posted by JuneoftheMearkat on 01 June 2015 - 03:34 AM

That looks like a palette ordering problem. So when you insert map sprites with Gbage, scroll through the map sprites and go to the colour control editor in the windows dropdown. The top line of 16 colors for an allied game sprite (with the correct palette offset) should be ordered like this:

allypaletteexample_zpstd8bwrmy.png

However when you make custom map sprites in some other program, the palette order is usually not so neat and matched up (causing the problem where the colors are janky). So what you can do (or at least what I've done, there is probably some other better method) is open your custom sprite set in Usenti. Look to the right of the Usenti window where the RGB sliders are. Under it should be a mostly black box that shows all of the colors in your open image. If you're using only the allied map sprite palette given, it should have sixteen filling the top row (it may not show all the colors if you don't use every color in your sprite, but that's okay).

Now, go to "palette" in the dropdown and pick the "swap" option. The index for swapping color spots is 0-15 (left to right for the row of 16 colors). Swap around your colors by using index numbers so that they match the palette ordering shown before. To help, you can get the rgb values for each color by going into the gbage colour editor and clicking the top row of colors. Note that you CAN'T just use the sliders to change each spot because it will change the image as well, you have to swap the order as far as I've found. The exception to this is when you didn't use an avalailable color that the FE palette gives you (there should be a 0/0/0 RGB black space in the row of 16 for a color that wasn't used). You can (and should) just use the sliders to make it the right color in the index as shown by the allied unit palette. WELL THAT WAS LONG AND CONFUSING. I'm sorry XD. If you have questions, please ask and I'll post more pics. Also anyone way more competent at this stuff than me should totally say if there is a better way to fix the palette ordering.

OH YEAH, make sure you "Save As" your image in Usenti after you reorder the palette. I'd recommend saving it as a 4-bit type image, and uncheck the transparency checkbox when saving, I've had problems with other saved types before :/.
