#125003 Fire Emblem: Sun and Eclipse

Posted by kirant on 23 December 2015 - 04:06 AM

I anticipate a hiatus starting Christmas, simply because I will have new toys to play with, but I will definitely return to this project afterward. I have FAR too much work to do...

Infinitely faster than me.

I must work at a pace approaching molasses in snow.  On a good day.

#124917 Topic of Epic Quotes

Okay.  I just burst out laughing.  That's actually pretty funny.  Actively went out of my way to watch every late night shot just to see how they chose to ridicule the same comments.

It still shocks me that Americans still hold the protest vote so strong that people are willing to vote for this guy just to get the traditional politicians out of power.  Not that the has a chance of winning the election, but still enough to make the other Republicans shake a bit.

#124890 The Official "How was your day?" Topic

Posted by kirant on 05 December 2015 - 06:46 AM

So...um...hockey is fun.

Got to go to a regular season game tonight.  Game was all sorts of nuts.  Last 2 minutes of the game were just crazy.

Background: teams were tied going into that last minute. Game until that point was all sorts of strange with bunches of goals being scored seconds apart and then the game consisting of trading chances for about half of it.  Seriously, if I were to show a non-hockey fan what makes hockey exciting, that would be it.  Not a coaches' dream game, but highly entertaining.

I digress.  1 minute (out of 60) to go - Away team gets a penalty shot (same as in association football pretty much but the nature of hockey allows the player to "retain forward momentum" during the shot).  Scores.  4-3 for the away team.  1 minute is nothing in terms of time.

(More background on the shooter - Marchand is the hockey equivalent to a flopper.  He falls anytime he's touched.  He's also a grating player who often makes his money by agitating opponents...it's like that kid who says "I'm not touching you"...not a really likable guy, but that's why he gets paid.  Fans of his team would defend him but that's about it)

Home team pulls the goaltender and go all out.  Scouring in this sort of situation is typically goal losing (last I read - 1/3 chance you get scored on, 1/9 chance you score).  The following clip goes until 1.2 seconds left (in association football terms, imagine tying in extra time)

I'd probably estimate the decibel level around 115-120.  The reasoning is that they had a "how loud can you get?" event earlier in the game which rang in at 105.  And this was by far louder (as well as a little louder than a rock concert, typically in the 108-114 range).  You couldn't hear yourself shout (and trust me, I tried).

Overtime starts.  The NHL uses rules of 3v3 (3 skaters on each side as oppose to 5).  So lots of open ice and lots of chances for a sudden death goal.

The goal scorer ends up with a hat trick (3 goals in a single game).  It's a rare event (15 in about 300 games this year).  Fans, as expected, go nuts.  As per tradition, you can see people throwing hats onto the ice after the goal is scored.

How bad is it?  I'm honestly not reading anything about the game (for fear of spoilers) until I get it.

#123758 Satoru Iwata dies at 55

Posted by kirant on 13 July 2015 - 08:32 PM

I'll copy what I said on another forum...

Unfortunately, I think Iwata is part of a dying breed...the CEO who lives with passion, conviction, and took charge himself at all possible opportunities.

Here are some more stories about him:
 - He halved his own salary in the face of decreasing Nintendo sales.  To be fair, this is expected of CEOs in Japan when things turn south...but let's keep this in mind still.
 - To assist the production of Super Smash Brothers Melee (and to meet the Christmas deadline), he stepped in from his position as General Manager (his last position before CEO) and debugged for three weeks.  Keep in mind he was probably half a decade out of practice at this point.

 - He managed to compress the Johto section of Pokemon Gold/Silver to such a degree that they could fit the Kanto side in (keep in mind that GS came out on a 2 MB cartridge)

 - He ported the key parts of Pokemon to the N64 (which would eventually become Pokemon Stadium) without a reference manual

 - And, most incredible of all, he managed to save Earthbound on his own by programming almost all the key elements of it.

Iwata is the type of CEO I would always want.  He worked his way up, never lost sight of his past, and got his hands dirty as needed.  A programming genius and dedicated developer until the end.  It's too bad that we have to see him leave so early but I think he left us an unforgettable legacy as is.

I think it's best to leave it with one of his most famous quotes, which encompasses everything about him.

On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.

#123606 Zero Escape 3 (and other Aksys stuff)

Posted by kirant on 05 July 2015 - 04:49 AM

Hype?  What hype?

It's not like I've been on "Operation Blue Bird", the fan group showing support for the Zero Escape series, since they announced that they couldn't get Zero Escape 3 off the ground due to lack of in-Japan interest.

#123572 Fates: Conquest (Nohr) Review

Posted by kirant on 04 July 2015 - 05:36 AM

Just going to point out...if you think the characters are shallow, I can't imagine how badly I'd savage the characterization.

I mean, it's new Fire Emblem.  I'm probably getting it regardless.  But man that sounds horrible.

and people whose main focus of the game is to pick out female or male characters to dote on for reasons such as their looks, design or personality quirks

You mean I won't find my next writing inspiration in this game?  0/10

#123243 E3: Bethesda Presser Discussion

Posted by kirant on 15 June 2015 - 05:54 AM

Fallout 4 comes out Novemvber 10th, 2015.
Novemvber or Smarch?  Both sound like a long time away.

But still.  All on the hype train.  I've got a lot of respect for Bethesda for waiting so long in development to announce Fallout 4.  Some other games are announced real early and momentum peters out or spirals out of control COUGHdukenukemforeverCOUGH.  I think they took advantage of Fallout's clout to the maximum and I'm on board.

#122965 Competitive mentality

Posted by kirant on 09 June 2015 - 06:21 AM

My tl;dr version: This aspect is an absolute negative aspect of non-competitive communities.  You may see it in competitive communities but I would fully expect the individuals retain a healthy respect for each other.

My long version:

I guess it's fair to start with a common quote that everyone sources incorrectly.  I won't even bother sourcing it because I know I'll get the wrong person.

When you go into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

It's a gridiron football quote, sure, but I think it hold relevance in any sport...physical or e-.  It's a very simple concept in my mind: be humble and be reasonable.  Victory and triumph are not reasons to act like a buffoon.  The suggested protocol is to treat it like normal.  Take the congratulations from your friends/teammates and get back to work.  To do otherwise suggests that victory is new and foreign territory to you and you don't know how to act when it's your turn to receive it.

One interpretation, of course, is that the biggest dagger you can strike into your opponent's heart is to act as if your current success is nothing special to you.  That this victory, crushing or otherwise, is so typical that you won't even bother wasting your breath on their efforts.

The other and one I prefer much more is that you are not attributing victory to yourself but to your team.  This is something that typically concerns itself with a team sport but you can typically translate it to other ones as well.  Simply put, you are to celebrate with your team and enjoy the moment as a group as oppose to going out and shooting off your mouth at your opponent.  You instead focus your acknowledgements to your team for what they did and make it a team celebration as oppose to an individual one blasting off at the nearest target.  This is not only part of being a good team member but also one of dignity and class as you don't attempt to rub your victory in the face of your opponent.  Or at least, you pretend you aren't.

The third aspect of the quote in my mind is simple sportsmanship.  The end aspect I think we should all remember is that competitive mentalities do not conflict with being a good sport.  I'd argue the two are completely divergent and that rubbing a victory in your opponent's face is pointless when compared to the simple aspect of player competitiveness.

I personally don't get fussed over games myself.  I'm invested.  I love to win and sometimes will think that the AI is utter BS when it does some physics breaking move against me in a sports game.  But I also think that something we oft forget is that games are an escape.  It's entertainment and nothing else unless we're using it as a money making venture.  We do it for fun.  And I don't think you find it fun to have salt rubbed in your wound with some trash talk...so leave it off to the side.  It's a very toxic substance and something that often spills over into your faceless teammates if you're playing a MOBA.  MOBAs have easily some of the worst fan bases around if you go by reputation and trash talking tension leaking into rage at your own team is why.

Does it have its place?  Of course.  Everything does.  A team with emotional players may find it advantageous to rally them around a witty retort.  But this is an overall net negative unless you know who's on your team since you might get me...a guy who'll just attempt to mediate tension within my own team and just tell everyone that it's a game and we should all just relax a bit.  Losing should be at least entertaining.  Fun?  Maybe not.  But it should relax you still and be the escape you wish of it.

#122964 What do you look for/how do you approach artistic works?

Posted by kirant on 09 June 2015 - 05:08 AM

A work which has me think far longer than I've observed the work is far more impressive to me than one which is simply "just" entertainment.  It's pretty simple to me: a superior piece delivers a quality product but also causes the viewer to pause and think.

I mean, I like giant robots.  But it's pretty face level.  I love Martian Successor Nadesico on the other hand because it delivers that as well as touches on some pretty strange subjects, the best of which being obsession with media, that obsessing over something creates problems despite being a universal language we may all speak.  I similarly love media which don't spoon feed you narrative and know its audience is smart enough to put two and two together.

#122634 Do you want S-supports to return in IF?

Posted by kirant on 01 June 2015 - 05:36 AM

I'm fine with S supports but I feel they need reworking.

The major issue is that C-A supports should tell a complete narrative between two characters...that they either get along, explore an aspect of a character, or have fundamental issues. That's the supports that I loved.  Nor does it hurt if it does some completely out of the blue stuff COUGHkent/fioraCOUGH.  The problem is that Awakening did away with that and forced a resolution in the S support for marriage compatible characters.  This basically leaves 80% of M/F supports incomplete and unsatisfactory on any given run.

I don't mind the idea of marriage blooming if the game lasts months and years again.  It makes sense somewhat.  However, make it much harder to get.  This should happen far, far down the road.  They solve their issues, bond, whatever...and then they remain friends for a longtime.  Then it's some reaction to an in-game event or a time jump that pushes the final button.  Persona's on my mind a lot for gold standards on social bonding in games and I think their approach in 4 Golden was excellent: make the final step take place after a major game event.

So...tl;dr version:

 - Make the C-A conversations self-contained.  This should wrap things up like in the older FE games or with marriage incompatible characters in Awakening

 - Make S supports much more difficult to attain and near endgame bonding.

#122632 What languages do you speak and/or understand?

Posted by kirant on 01 June 2015 - 05:19 AM

- What's your native language?

Native as in most spoken or first spoken?  English is my primary but I spoke rural dialect Chinese first.

- Do you speak or understand any other languages?

I have learned many languages previously...few I remember (it was mostly because this became my high school hobby).

I currently speak English and the same rural dialect Chinese.  I understand pieces of French, Latin, and Japanese though as they were languages I learned a great deal of previously.

- If so, how much: mastered (like, qualified-to-teach-it level), fluent in conversation, can talk but not read/write, can understand but not speak, etc.

I was fluent in all the above except Latin.  The only once I could say I'm at a mastered level are the two I use.

- What languages are you studying?

None.

- What languages might you like to know?

Russian interests me as do fictional languages with more elegant grammar systems.

#122610 Danganronpa Another Episode, other DR stuff

Posted by kirant on 01 June 2015 - 02:12 AM

AHAHAHA man, sorry I'm not laughing at you, I just find it great that if it's Danganronpa, you're willing to pre-order the LE of even something like this =P

Put "Zero Escape" in the title and I'm pretty sure I'd buy the limited edition, all the merchandise, and then proceed to purchase many more copies of the game.

Totally hasn't bought three copies of 999 so I could give some away

#122430 Danganronpa Another Episode, other DR stuff

I ordered it in the Limited Edition version.  Mostly because it has "Danganronpa" in its title.

I fully expect it a month after release given that I live north of the 37th.
