Draft 1 - Video Games

Anyways, tempted to pick Double Dash.
But fuck it, I live alone, I spend a lot of time on games, I'm taking Football Manager 2013.
13 is the last one I played.
Every save file is an epic journey of sky highs, crushing lows. You're trawling the world for those hidden gems, building your master tactics that would make most managers swoon, and telling agents where to shove it. It's not just a game, it's a relationship. You think you're sitting down for an hour, and it's next week, tears streaming down as Sergio, the bargain bin right back you found in some Polish 2nd division, has put the header in that gets your team promoted. To League 1.
Maybe you hate the sport, but I know this is the only true choice.
-
Other games:
Double Dash - duh.
PES6 - Great fun, if a little outdated now.
NBA 2K10 - Great gameplay, soundtrack, feel like it's the best one I've played.

There's so much good stuff to be had here, Civilization, Valkyria Chronicles, Advance Wars, Not to mention Final Fantasy tactics and many many others.
My pick will have to be
Age of Empires 2

Gently caress it though.
I draft Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

There's so little of this game that hasn't been said before. Even with a 2003 AI, it provides insane challenges. The game itself has a lengthy and interesting campaign. The normal campaign has high difficulty until you've well recognized the programming flaws. And once you have, then there's Advanced Campaign...which is an entirely new campaign on its own.
If you get bored of that, pull up a chair and play a game with friends. Hotseat is the one of the best things you can ever do. I should know - it was pretty much all my grade 7 through 9 lunch. And if you ever get bored, make your own maps.
Lighthearted story, decent balance, and a great, intuitive set up...so much awesome in a GBA cartridge.

Would've taken FE if it'd dropped allll the way down here. Never played Pikmin. Probably should. |
Fire Emblem is too expected. I feel the whole purpose of this is to help introduce each other to quality games that may have flown under the radar or weren't played.
Also Pikmin's fantastic. Really enjoyed the first two on the gamecube. Haven't played 3 as I don't have a WiiU, but I'd like to play it someday.

I think Fire Emblem is more than just a "tiny bit" of an RPG.
As Oblivion guessed, my pick is Starcraft II. I usually don't get addicted to games etc. but I think I honestly got addicted to this one. It was practically obsessive, playing matches and getting better. And even once I got bored of ladder (I pretty much got to 2v2 masters, the highest league, and then 1v1 diamond, the 2nd-highest league, and quit while I was ahead) I still had tons of fun playing custom games/"mods" because SCII is full of fun mods.
It's real-time strategy so it's like, the definition of strategy, lol.
My back-up picks were:
Age of Empires II - this game was super fun as a kid, a part of my childhood... hope to play the HD version someday
Age of Mythology - I think this might've been the only PC game I actually bought the CD for... at least, I don't remember any others (the rest I got digitally). I even still have it.

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume - The gameplay is mostly a turn-based strategy game on a playing field (think FE) but it's veeeery different. This is one of my favorite games though, the gameplay, music, and story were all great, and I actually beat it multiple times so I could get all the endings because it was that good. It's also a little dark and the graphics aren't bad either. It's also got a real-time action element to it where you're trying to time attacks together to juggle foes which gives more experience, amongst other things where how you attack affects how successful you are in dealing damage (unlike FE where it's 100% simulated and you just watch them fight). It's an RPG though which is why this was lower on my picks.

I don't totally agree, I think being introduced to games we haven't played is sort of a natural consequence, the intent is to try to get a list of good games together ala the "draft"--we're "drafting" a team of awesome games. We've done stuff like "suggest a game" before (though people eventually get bored and stop), but I'm not approaching that like this/I'm not going for super obscure titles lol

- X-COM (Any of the games could have worked)
- Master of Orion II
- Panzer General II
- Total War games
- Blood Bowl
- Rebel Star: Tactical Command
- Democracy 3
- Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI
...Yeah. I play a lot of turn-based strategy (all of the above).

X-Com Enemy Unknown was my next pick actually. Great game. |
I'm actually just about to put up a post about it in the video game board. I need more cannon fodder (actually, more male soldiers to care about) so I'm going to recreate this board in game.
Oh, it'll be so much fun to see people die because of the Long War mod

I'm going with any of the Union games, but for you all, I'll go with the one that was released internationally, Yggdra Union.
Blaze Union is srsly amazing tho, and Gloria Union wasn't too shabby. Unison is also good.
If you train your already good sense of proportion and get a better sense of shading and coloring... ...you really have great odds of being the next great customer around this forums and even FEND, congrats. :3

I'm picking Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
Is FFT a 'better' game? Yeah. But if someone asked me to play one now, I'm going FFTA every time. I'm sure there's some nostalgia thrown in somewhere, but I've always found it more fun to play.
Others:
Total Annihilation - loved this as a kid.
Civilization IV/V
FFT
FEs
We're going straight on to fighters, seeing as Snow is still AWOL, so it's Kirant's pick.

Oh well.
I draft Super Smash Brothers Melee. Off the board pick, huh? Well I was going to go with M.U.G.E.N., but that's just an engine.
Now, of course, when you think of fighting games, you probably have that standard 2D set up in mind where you have a health gauge and your job is to make their health bar hit zero. Well, Smash Brothers turned that system and put it on its head. You have no health limit. As ROB main in Brawl, I should know. Anyways, the game is very much more open ended than most designed fighting games since you have to navigate a sometimes large map (Hyrule Temple anyone?) and you win by forcing your opponent OFF the map.
Add to that the fun insanity of items and continuous map events and you've got a lot of fun.
Not much I can say here. Most of you should know what it is.

Obvious pick, it's a great game. Definitely found Melee more fun than Brawl, for whatever reason.
I'm better than my friends at Melee by far, but I know I'm really not that good, a trend that follows for pretty much all fighting games.

I actually kinda wanted to do M.U.G.E.N. too XD it was on my list (I had SSBM, SSBB--just because I love it so much, I don't think I'd pick another game from the same series--and M.U.G.E.N. lol).
So now I have to pick one of the lesser games that was fun but not nearly as enjoyable or meaningful to me, lol. Oh well. At least my pick isn't too far down the list.
Anyhow, Fish's turn?
