There were also the Advance ones, which I'm pretty sure are just GBA remakes of the original ones.
My favorites are Crisis Core and Tactics Advanced.

Yes, the GBA rereleases are the same games, but have bonus dungeons.

Heh some people should try the older ones. But for FFXII I say the main character was Ashe even though she was the last to join the party. It's mainly revolves around her wanting to restore her kingdom with a bit of Basch and the mix. Vaan and Penelo was there just for the ride. Plus we all know about the "Leading Man" Balthier and his partner Fran who doesn't really get a lot of story.
Also play the older ones they if you don't look at a walkthrough you get to enjoy the adventure of traveling. I remember before I had access to a computer and I was playing FF1, FF4 , and FF6 some parts I was confused on what to do. Also I lost Shadow because I left the floating island early.

I got every single character the first time around, no walkthrough. xD It was on the console, and I still remember it. Man. That game is amazing.

The Tactics series are pretty good. I only have ever played Tactics Advanced, but it's a pretty good game.
