1. You/your literary agent* sends in the first few chapters (or whatever the company requires) of your manuscript
2. Company takes f**king forever to decide if they want it (sometimes up to 6 months)
3. They accept it or deny it**
* Some companies require you to hire one of these guys. Mine, fortunately, did not. (Think of them as a lawyer who pitches your manuscript to a company and fights for you.) These guys usually want lots of royalties so you, the author, make even less. Unfortunately, a lot of big name publishers require literary agents now.
** The company can love your manuscript and your writing style, but may still deny it if they feel they can't make money off of it. Makes sense because they're a company, but sucks for you as a writer.
Conversely, you can go the route of self-publishing. This is done trough certain companies and services that do the publishing a mainstream publisher would do, but don't require literary agents, don't take forever, and cost quite a bit. Self publishing expedites the process by about 100%. (You can have a book on the market by the time a mainstream publisher would have made their decision to accept it or not.) It's becoming extremely popular and every author should at least consider it.
Also, thank you! =)

I GOT MY EDITED MANUSCRIPT BACK! A day earlier than expected! I'll be going through it in the next few days. It's marked up pretty well (which is a good sign; it shows they actually did a lot of work) so I'm pretty excited. I'll be using my university's computer lab to print out the whole thing so it's easier to read. I already pay for tuition, so why not, right?

The only thing that irks me about it (right now anyway) is that they changed "axe" to "ax." I like it with the e...so I'll probably change those all back

Oh, apparently axe is British and ax is American. No wonder they changed it. Blah, screw it. I like my axe.
And congratulations! You're getting there!

I actually meant facepalming at things like stupid typos/grammar mistakes YOU made. Or do you not get to see what they corrected, just how it is now? Or do you just function better than me late at night and not have your characters grab waste?
It just... doesn't feel like I'm 1/3 of the way through. Did you feel like you were?

And I see what they corrected. They have underlines and arrows along with comments on the margin about why and what they did. (Thank God.)
And no...when I hit 15,000 I was like eh. It's a milestone, though. Plus, I didn't really have a set goal until about the 30,000 or so mark. (My goal was somewhere between 70,000 and 85,000). So it didn't mean as much back then.

I'll have to remember to buy it if I see it.
And I hope you'll be able to help me improve my writing in the future.

And I'm always around to help people out with their writing. Be it critique, editing, I can help! And by critique I mean HELPFUL criticism...not ripping someone a new one. Harsh critique only discourages the writer, imo. (Refer to Rujio's thread here if you want to see how I "critique" other people's work.)

I agree. Constructive criticism is fine but some people just use it as an excuse to be a dick and cut people up.
All I ask is that people cnc me civilly and respect my choices whether or not it's what they want.
Right now I'm rewriting chapter one of my little miniseries. Using wordpad this time and doing it in a more book-like fashion.

You sure have taken constructive criticism really well before with your sprites, Nayr. /Sarcasm. Just putting that out there. |
And that little piece of glibness is exactly what I'm talking about. The majority of the people who have cnc'd me have acted like assholes and get all butthurt when I choose not to listen. But if you ask the right people, you would find I can very cooperative when they are nice about it instead of just going on the words of guys like Dei and Seph who try to pass off rudeness and bullying as cnc.
Also what's your problem exactly? We've never had any issues in the past that would warrant your hostility towards me. And btw, I've seen some of your sprites and you've got no room criticizing mine.
