Last two films I saw were
Lincoln (I can see why Day-Lewis won the oscar, that performance. GG)
and
Oz: The Great and Powerful (Some very nice special effects, especially the china girl doll but overall a mediocre film)

Pacific Rim Well, let's get this out of the way: I'm still a little disappointed that it's US-centric. Poor Russians and Chinese got about 2 minutes of screen time before dying (or getting knocked out of commission for the rest of the show). I'm glad they made it more international in nature, more so than most shows, and it feels like that when you mix in the Australians, but USA coming in to save the day once again, as was the case for the major fight scene (on their own I might add), was a little boring. I probably would have loved this scene if Striker Eureka (Australians mentioned above) did more here, but letting the main hero get both on their own was a bit boring. Plus, some of the names for the other Jaegers are just too awesome and I want to see them (Chrome Brutus, Nova Hyperion, Vulcan Specte). The addict in me demands it. Also, Tesla fists. Why did they have to be the only remaining pilots to die? :/ That being said, this show knows what it was and pretends not to be anything else. The first 5 seconds were practically an "all you need to know" about the show. Visually, it's mech porn. Flat out. The opening sequence I can't count the number of times I thought "that's lovely". And it does this for each unit, which probably also fed some of the disappointment that so few mechs actually got screen time. Story is what it needs to be: an excuse to watch mechs punch and stab monsters. Characters were very much the same. Cliches have gotten a poor reputation recently as being bad...this show is pretty strong indication of the opposite. When used as an excuse, they pull familiarity into it and make it obvious that it's not the focus, something played to the hilt here. Animation, as mentioned before, is fluid and great. While it's more western oriented mechs, you feel there's a hint of anime-esc design in them. The fact that none of them are on treads and have fairly lengthy legs are pretty strong indicators. This is probably why I wanted to see more work from the non-American team as well: Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon, who got all but 1 scene of combat, were really, really pretty in animation. If you're a mech fan, you'll probably catch some homage to old shows (See: Mazinger Z. Twice from my count. Also: Neon Genesis Evangelion in the opening sequence, but in a "blink and you'll miss it" variety). Soundtrack is fun. The opening theme is the only one that stands out though. I'll admit too that this is a show I could put my brain on freeze. Probably since I just love watching giant robots beat up other giant things. |

My boss and this other dude were talking about it. Supposedly the story had a lot more potential but was pretty much just there to give a reason for epic mech battles. Well, okay. Haha. Haven't watched it myself though. Might like to eventually.
Most recent movie I watched was World War Z with none other than Shu himself, haha. It was alright. Nothing overly special, but solid I guess. Typical zombie plague war thing I guess.
Signature thanks to Shu.

There's very little potential in the story IMO. It's all cliches for the sake of advancing the story. I mean, if you're even partly genre savvy (actually, you could probably get them if you're blind to genre), you'll see the plot twists being telegraphed from miles away. About the only way they could have advanced it would have been to make a Lovecraft horror story, and those are tough to pull when you have spent much of your 190 million dollars on making pretty mechs.
The potential loss for me is just the really weak international feel. Again, maybe it's because they lovingly animated mechs like Cherno Alpha, but it seems like a waste for them to appear so they can make the American look better.
EDIT: Case and point:
That's all CG I think and it's all amazing. It's too bad they didn't make other units as often as the American.

That was enough for me not to watch it.

I like X-Men stuff to some modest degree so I might watch Wolverine
As for World War Z I didn't read the book nor do I particularly care about it so eh... and I can totally imagine what was said in the pic there being true since at least the right side was true and the left side sounds more like an actual book lol
Signature thanks to Shu.

Thought it was a fine film, far too long and a lot of the stuff was unneeded. Bilbo is silent for a good hour of the film, what happened to it being his story?

I understood a good deal of it, (watched it in Korean without subs) thanks to it being rather simple. Although, I don't think gravity was a rule in that film. Oh, romantic comedy, btw.
