Uhh... I never played FF7 before. Could someone tell me what materia is exactly so I know what I'm choosing?

Materia let you cast magic or use certain abilities in FFVII. Basically, you're choosing abilities for your person.

If you've played any FF games(I dunno if you have or not), it's pretty much the same thing as a tome, I believe. It lets you cast magic.

There are some materia that give abilities though, such as 'throw'.
Also, views on steal ability in-rp?

There's also purple other materia that do other things. For example, I have a Chocobo Lure materia. It lets me find Chocobos.

True. It's pretty much tomes, but for skills. And they're not set in stone, so me and bblues can switch if we so wished it.
