Which way do you pronounce it?

I prefer "Manga" because it sounds much less japanese and I feel like a complete japanese-crazy person saying "manga', but of course the correct way is to say Mon-ga, and so 90% of the time I say that.

Manga as in a male 'Man', and then "ga" as in "gaaa, this sucks" (not that anybody really says that).

Mon-ga, mon as in "pokemon" or "monsters" and "ga" same as before.

Man-ga
Mon-ga

Which way do you pronounce and why?

A worthy topic, I guess. Uh, I call it Manga usually, even though I say Monga when I'm alone, my friends don't know the difference and only call it Manga. So I have to correct them every time.

Don't ask why I say Monga to myself. I'm not crazy. By the way, watch The Number 23. Creepy movie.

Wait, wait wait, hold up. What is this? I'm confused. Since when do Japanese people pronounce manga as monga? I've talked to Japanese people all my life and being a anime fanatic myself we often talk about manga, but never have I heard this distorted pronunciation.

And before you tell me that's how they pronounce it in Japan, I'd like to note I was born and raised in Japan for the first 14 years of my life. So this monga really confuses me.

On a seperate note I have noticed that the english/american version of manga stretches the first "a" In this sense the pronunciation ma-an-gah is used. While in Japanese they don't prolong the "a" so it sounds like man-ga. Or at least that's what I hear it as.

Either way I'm sure monga is incorrect.

Oh, I see. Unfortunately major anime/manga nerds in america say the correct way is to say monga, but apparently we are all idiots. smile.gif

Well I don't know if I'd go as far as saying they're all idiots. But I'm assuming some idiot started the false information. Or at least I think it's false, it could vary depending on the area of Japan, (Some places have complicated accents) But even then I doubt manga would be pronounced elsewise, (since it's like saying there's different ways to pronounce ones name)

But yes, Japan's alphabet isn't like the ABC where "a" can be read in various manners ("all" "apple") So spelling is near impossible to get incorrect and when transcibed it definitely says manga not monga.

I've chatted with various people from the US before over my years of online chatting and I've never heard this issue be brought up :/ *Goes off to google Monga"

I just made up the term 'monga' to represent the alternate way that I hear people say it; people who care enough say monga while others say it more 'casually' (manga). It's more of a social thing it appears to be, and it's not major either, so I wouldn't get too buzzed about it, but in any case, your claim doesn't necessarily end the discussion. tongue.gif

Pish.

Manga (in kanji 漫画; in hiragana まんが; in katakana マンガ?) Manga.ogg listen (help·info), pronounced /ˈmɑŋgə/.

Right from wikipedia, so uh. It's pronounced /ˈmɑŋgə/. Good luck deciphering that.

m Man, haM
ɑː bAlm, fAther
ŋɡ fiNGer
ə RosA’s, Above

From Wikipedia:IPA for English. So it's like Man-gah. I think. :/

I said Man-gah, which appears to be Manga to me. And no one has faith in wikipedia, but it can't be edited that easily. You're forgetting two important things.

1) Wikipedia has bots that revert un-registered users changes.
2)Wikipedia has basement dwellers with no life dedicated to the site that scour every change.

In any case, I'm not sure if my interpretation of the letters is right. It's probably both Manga and Monga, depending on accents for the Japanese, and preference for the English.

Persistence in this issue is what this topic is about.

I can see it as man or mon. Think about how [stereotyping] Jamaicans [/stereotyping] say man. It's like "hey mon". You know?

Wikipedia can be edited EASILY, I saw some article about... Basketball, and the someone changed it too something along these lines... "The wear Reatrded socks, and Fatass Jerseys, and they shoot in the Girl -hole (but actual word, sorry for Possible innapropiateness and offense)" and It stayed like that for a week or so (I was doing a report on Basketball...) I think it's changed now, but It wasn't then...

and, DON'T KEEP MAKING ME GO OFFTOPIC!

Wikipedia can be easily changed, but it just as easily reverted. You don't understand how many wikipedia members have no lives. :/
Chances are two people kept reverting back and forth for a week until the topic was protected.

Back on topic. I can see it being man or mon.

Hmm well if you put it that way any word can be pronounced funny, "friend" could be pronounced as fry-end or re-spelled as "frend."

I'm not complaining that monga shouldn't be used. If the manga addicts want to call it a comic that's their choice. While I admit that I'm kind of irritated by the false claim "that's how the japanese say it." Overall it's not a huge issue. And even if I get everyone here to understand that and agree with me, it's not going to change a thing.

I still would like to know how the break up of the word m"ah"n could be interpreted as "o" I mean it's not a spelling issue here, it's how it's pronounced right? I'm certain the sentence "Ah I found it" is different to "Oh I found it"

No. Friend is Fried. Fri =/= Fry. And Friend =/= Frend. Frend would be just be one syllable.

And Mahn would be Mon. You can't just substitute other words in, that's basic english rules. The M and N in Mahn change it.

You're pretty much saying that Parent is not Per-ent, it is Pa-rent.
The first syllable takes priority over the others.
