But I know absolutely nothing about the Tales of... series having played absolutely none of them.
So is it any good? Should I go for it? Have any of you even played it?

It's a great game but it's a JRPG that's a little slow-paced. The battle system also takes a while to pick up, the main issues being that the system isn't super fun, at least not until much later, and even then you need to be pretty weary of your skills if you want to pull off any devastating combos. Why is this a real issue? Well the battle systems are usually the best part of the Tales of series so yeah...
Tales of the Abyss has a story that I personally found a bit overrated with some aspects not too favorable but a LOT of people liked it and thought it was pretty deep (and it actually can be pretty deep in terms of morality and other things). I kind of think most of the characters in the game are douchebags but I won't deny it's at least a solid plot overall with solid gameplay, solid music (well it has pretty great music but I think the other Tales of games were slightly better).
So yeah if you're looking for 3DS and don't mind RPGs Tales of the Abyss would be a great choice.
Other choices are (keep in mind they might not be available in your region [yet])
SMT IV
Project X Zone
Kid Icarus Uprising
Fire Emblem Awakening
Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon
Starfox 64 3D
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
And some other games I haven't played or are not as reputable but you might like
Code of Princess
Need for Speed: The Run
Sonic Generations
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (not sure if this is the exact title though lol)
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Something Mario Sticker Star (I think it's a Paper Mario game)
HarmoKnight
Etrian Odyssey something idr
hopefully this helps though I'd be more than happy to discuss 3D games in-depth with you XD

In your opinion Blazer (and any others who want to answer), What are the best games on the 3DS. Currently I own 3, Fire Emblem, Ocarina of Time and the Porfessor Layton so right now my collection is a little bare.
Are there any 'must-plays'? Anything to truly avoid, apart from obvious movie tie-ins and useless crap like style boutique or whatever?

Um, let's see, in terms of games to avoid, I can't tell you too much because I pretty much buy all the games I like haha, but in terms of games I would STRONGLY suggest, Fire Emblem Awakening and Kid Icarus: Uprising I think, the rest are either ports or not quiet strong enough or perhaps too specifically catered to say they're "must-haves" or anything.
It pretty much just comes down to which series and genres you'd like to play after that, I listed a lot of the good games and there are a few decent fighting games if you're into that (a Street Fighter game and a BlazBlue game for instance, IIRC).
I mean I think Project X Zone is hella fun but that's mostly because of my familiarity with the characters and the fact that I like it's simple yet overdone gameplay (you have to pretty much go all-out almost every battle haha and each battle is kind of like a light show but the gameplay itself is rather simple and a lot of the enjoyment stems from fan service... err, characters I like being in the game, not cleavage fan service lol).
SMT IV I'm not too far in but I don't like yet haha I think it's pretty catered to people who like RPG's, challenges, or already like the series >_<;
Starfox 64 3D you can know what to expect and the KH game was pretty simple so while it was fun the best part of it for me was the cameos from The World Ends With You so I definitely can't say everyone would enjoy it (though if you've played KH games and liked them before you'll probably like this one).
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is pretty much just another mario platformer to me, there's that whole "gold coin" thing they made a big deal about but you only get to use the ability a few times so while it IS ultra cool it's kinda overhyped and the game feels like New Super Mario Bros. but with different levels lol (and the 3D was awful personally).
But yeah in general I haven't played a 3DS game I didn't like yet except for SMT IV and even then I don't hate it yet so... I'd say just pick up something that sounds good/at least one person has suggested and you'll probably like it, haha, keep in mind some games will help kill more or less time than others though if you're trying to save money (e.g. you can beat Starfox 64 in like 2 hours or less IIRC so unless you plan to do 10 playthroughs... D:).

I have street passed enough people playing either Mario (one of them), Luigi's Mansion or AC: New Leaf, so I assume they're good.

I plan to get it once I kill some of the other games I'm playing (have like 20 mid-playthrough now lol)
(The fact that I can't even remember half the good 3DS games attests to just how many there are)

Don't forget Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate! Also a fun 3DS (and Wii U) game. |
How on earth did I forget this game? If you have the 3DS version it's good to note that if you have a friend you with the Wii U version you can still play the online quests with them so you don't have to do them alone!
